Its not as simple as that though, is it? What's to say that Wenger didn't ask for one or two big names, only for the board to refuse it on the grounds of wages or the transfer fee being deemed too large? If this is indeed the case, this might be why the Arsenal board seem to be very understanding of the draught the club's going through.

Given that we don't actually know what's going on behind the scenes or just how restricted Wenger has been, we can only judge him on what he's achieved with the resources that have been made available to him. There aren't many who could match Wenger's recent achievemnts, if given the type of budget he's had to work with. He's kept them competitive and barring a few collapses, they could have easily won the league in the last few years.

It's taken a £70m investment from Chelsea in january in order for them to overtake Arsenal and they're only ahead by 3 points. £70m is probably what the whole of Arsenal's squad has been put together for, which shows you all you need to, about just what Wenger's been up against. We can all talk about United also being financially restricted but our spending easily dwarfs arsenal's and without it, I doubt we'd have been half as successful as we have over the last 5 years or so.
How exactly did it take £70m investment for Chelsea to get above Arsenal? It's fair to say that £50m of that had a detrimental effect. Maybe if they'd spent less they'd be even further ahead of Arsenal.

If they couldn't compete for big name signings before because they didn't have the revenue due to their stadium being too small, and if they cannot compete for big money signings now because despite having a larger stadium they still cannot afford it...what was the point of the last few years?

If in the years either side of the stadium move the club is still in the same position as to how much it can invest in the first team squad, why not hold off the new stadium for a few years until you got to a point that you had sufficient capital to not have to borrow to build it meaning that for years after you move in you're in no better situation than you were before?

Hopefully they implode like usual after another big game loss at this stage of the season.

There comes a point where the FA should seriously consider not granting them a place in the Champions League regardless of where they finish. They are a complete waste of a spot every single season, going out with a whimper as soon as they have to face any semi decent side, happy settling for the 4th place trophy and revenue that comes along with it. May as well give someone else like Southampton a go instead.

I can't really enjoy the "let's all laugh at" threads anymore. It just isn't the same.

Is there a more inconsistent, contradictory, bipolar fan in football world than Piers Morgan? All this in the space of a couple of hours.

I think Wenger has to shoulder the blame for this result. He shouldn't have gone for the jugular bringing Chamberlain and Walcott on. On the other hand, credit has to be given to Monaco, as they simply outplayed Le Arse tonight.

Two attack minded full backs, one defensive midfielder and 5 attackers (doesn't help that Mertesacker gets out-sprinted by cleaning ladies and reserve goalkeepers).

Monreal better than Gibbs. Just that bit smarter in a crisis; if football was played perfectly in formation and at slowish pace Gibbs would be fine (similar to Gary Cahill and Michael Dawson really; he can't react when people are counter attacking).

Sheesh, Arsenal man. Even my two year old is figuring out their CL pattern with a crayon and my bedroom wall.

Just as predictable as they are in the CL, they are equally predictable in the league. They'll go on a strong run now, once they've been comfortably knocked out of another cup, the FA, against Utd.

Wenger's decision to bring on Walcott and Chamberlain was fine. They both created openings but the players fluffed their lines. That 3rd goal was typical Arsenal. Having done just enough to go to the second leg with some optimism they shoot themselves in the foot.

Don't get me wrong, defeat is a very bad thing and to get 3 away goals will be extremely tough, but that defeat is purely down on the players. Don't bring the manager into it.

I've been refreshing ArsenalFanTV.

I don't know how the Arsenal support cope. Deep down they surely all must know it's time for Wenger to go? Every season the past decade or so has surely been some sort of disappointment? So much so that last season was considered brilliant, and fair balls to them winning the FA Cup but they never competed in the Premier League or Champions League.

One thing is guaranteed with Wenger. He gets a win when his job is most vulnerable. They'll win at the weekend.

Yep, and within a couple of weeks it'll be all fine... Of course 'til they get knocked out by Monaco and then it'll be crisis mode again... And so on and so forth... Arsenal pretty much summed up over the past decade.

I can't imagine being an Arsenal fan, its just must be so...boring. They've basically been having the same season every single year for the past 10 years.

Robbie from ArsenalFanTv must feel bittersweet when games like these come about. Disappointment at the result, but think of the views! Entertainment galore. I can't wait for our game against them next week. I want to see Claude cry.
