I really hope he doesn't get away lightly for turning informant, the man was probably the biggest cretin in FIFA.
http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/33041467'Russia & Qatar may lose World Cups' - Fifa official
Russia and Qatar could lose the 2018 and 2022 World Cups respectively if evidence emerges of bribery, leading Fifa official Domenico Scala has said.
The countries deny wrongdoing in their bidding processes and Scala admits he has not seen evidence of corruption.
Scala is the head of Fifa's audit and compliance committee.
But he said: "Should there be evidence that the awards to Qatar and Russia came only because of bought votes, then the awards could be cancelled."
Speaking to Swiss newspaper Sonntagszeitung, he added: "Until today, the respective evidence has not been provided."
Scala made similar comments at the end of 2013 but in light of events at Fifa in the past two weeks this will be viewed as a more serious warning.
Seven senior Fifa officials were arrested last month in high-profile dawn raids at a Zurich hotel, where they had been staying ahead of their presidential election.
They are among 14 people charged by US prosecutors, who allege they accepted bribes and kickbacks estimated at more than $150m (£100m) over a 24-year period.
Swiss authorities have also launched a separate criminal investigation into how the 2018 and 2022 World Cups were allocated.
Sepp Blatter, Fifa president since 1998, was re-elected at the Zurich meeting but announced four days later that he would resign amid the corruption allegations engulfing the organisation
Blazer and Warner are disgusting human beings.
The arrogance of the untouchable.I find it very alarming that Warner could just use the $$$ to pay credit card bills. I would have assumed a modicum of subterfuge. ie transfer money to shell company like 'Carribean Football Foundation' and disburse from there (even spend a few $$ on a pitch or two)
Oh yeah! Hell yeah!
Jack Warner, what a fecking clown. Actually calling him a clown is an insult to clowns.
I wonder what Putin will do about this?
What can he do, any sabre rattling & he'll suffer stronger sanctions & their economy in very weak as it is.I wonder what Putin will do about this?
He will throw his toys out his pram but that's about all he can do. It will obviously be another massive stain on corruption in Russia.I wonder what Putin will do about this?
That's assuming he isn't lead out in cuffs during the next wave of arrests. There is no way Russia loses the '18 Cup, just not enough time. People seem to be forgetting that Blatter is still President for the rest of this year.
Forget Russia, will FIFA even exist in 2018?There is no way Russia loses the '18 Cup, just not enough time. People seem to be forgetting that Blatter is still President for the rest of this year.
Probably.Forget Russia, will FIFA even exist in 2018?
Blatter is a Swiss citizen, as long as he stays in Switzerland nothing will happen to him. That's assuming he isn't lead out in cuffs during the next wave of arrests.
Swtizerland may build a case against him based on the FBI work. They are already investigating.Blatter is a Swiss citizen, as long as he stays in Switzerland nothing will happen to him.
The Swiss have already said that they are not investigating him and trust me they will not do anything to him unless they think he violated Swiss law, no matter what the FBI says or does.Swtizerland may build a case against him based on the FBI work. They are already investigating.
Tbf, Swiss are trying to change their image recently and been more willing to somewhat bend under pressure of US in many matters which were previously no go. So if FBI has a case and US govt. pushes for it then considering the high profile nature they may try him in Switzerland. The Swiss have already said that they are not investigating him and trust me they will not do anything to him unless they think he violated Swiss law, no matter what the FBI says or does.
It does seem a touch odd that we haven't had it in England for nearly 50 years. I know there are more than 25 other countries to fill those spots in the meantime, but Germany have had it twice since then and so have Mexico.England would have to have a decent shout at one of those World Cup slots if they become available, you'd have thought.
And I reckon they will be available.
Weeeell, West Germany held it in 74 & a united Germany in 2006 & Mexico got the finals in 86 due to Columbia, having been awarded the finals, then pulling out. England don't need it - give it Poland or Scandinavia or the old eastern Europe countries. It does seem a touch odd that we haven't had it in England for nearly 50 years. Say what you will about the national team, England as a nation is a giant of world football...and supposedly the home of the sport.
England 2022. Bring it on!
It has nothing to do with special protection, the Swiss will not extradite a Swiss citizen nor will they prosecute in Swiss court based on something the IRS/FBI says. Not going to happen, no matter how much many would like to see otherwise.@Kyonn I don't think Sepp enjoys the same support/protection he once did. It's eroding every day with each revelation, article, and tweet. The Swiss investigation into the 2018 & 2022 bids is likely to reveal his involvement. With the public outcry they may have no choice but to prosecute the criminal mastermind behind this global fraud that stains Switzerland. An ambitious politician could really make a name for her or himself by taking down that monster, don't you think?
I remember hearing on a guardian podcast that the Swiss Authorities are pretty embarrassed by the mess that is Fifa and have viewed FIFA as their big target to get(Also isn't there some sort Swiss/US Treaty with regards to extradition.)It has nothing to do with special protection, the Swiss will not extradite a Swiss citizen nor will they prosecute in Swiss court based on something the IRS/FBI says. Not going to happen, no matter how much many would like to see otherwise.
If I'm wrong I'll make sure I come back and publicly admit it but I think I have a better chance of winning powerball then Blatter has of seeing jail time.
Who is predicting that he will be in a US jail? Let's start with "Blatter indicted by Swiss authorities on fraud and tax evasion charges as a result of joint investigation with FBI". He will probably be dead before he could be prosecuted.I have a better chance of winning powerball then Blatter has of seeing jail time.
He's not going to see jail time, neither in the US or Switzerland. I highly doubt he's ever arrested. The Swiss have already said he's not under investigation.Who is predicting that he will be in a US jail? Have you ever thought that perhaps the Swiss authorities don't want to spook him and inadvertently force him to destroy evidence? He's not going to see jail time, neither in the US or Switzerland. I highly doubt he's ever arrested. The Swiss have already said he's not under investigation.
What evidence? Do you really think Blatter kept secret documents of his bribes? And even if he did don't you think would have already destroyed them given all that has happened? Sorry, no. I don't think the Swiss authorities are running a con game on Blatter.Have you ever thought that perhaps the Swiss authorities don't want to spook him and inadvertently force him to destroy evidence?
How is having negative views on Qatar's modern slavery being anti Islamic?I was branded 'xenophobic' today during a pub discussion when I divulged that I didn't think the cost of human life and (alleged) corruption was worth hosting the world cup in Qatar.
Am I being small minded by holding onto the notion that hundreds of people have lost their lives preparing a football tournament? My mates agreed with me, but a guy from the middle east said I didn't realise it but I had been conditioned by the media into being hysterically anti-Islamic (ironically, whilst having a pint in the pub with us)
Otherwise a nice guy, and a United man too.
Switzerland does not extradite their own citizens. So unless he did not violent Swiss law, nothing will happen to him as long as he stays in SwitzerlandSwtizerland may build a case against him based on the FBI work. They are already investigating.
That was when Fifa / Blatter handed over documents for the judges to check. Now, it is a completely different scenario and the Swiss authorities will jail him if they find somethingHe's not going to see jail time, neither in the US or Switzerland. I highly doubt he's ever arrested. The Swiss have already said he's not under investigation.
The Swiss may not extradite him, but they can pursue their own case against him and use evidence gathered by the FBI, which would be comparable to an extradition and conviction. He's not going to see jail time, neither in the US or Switzerland. Probably not unfortunately. Its only in the last couple of decades there has been any bribery legislation regarding private businesses in Switzerland at all, and my understanding of the current legal system is that they only prosecute if the bribes are paid to a swiss company. They don't seem to care if its to a company outside their own borders. The Swiss may not extradite him, but they can pursue their own case against him and use evidence gathered by the FBI, which would be comparable to an extradition and conviction.
In either case, the more information that's released in the coming weeks, the quicker he will be chased out of FIFA. The important point is that he will be gone soon and FIFA can slowly regenerate and reinvent itself, and look at revoting the upcoming WCs.Probably not unfortunately. So, Blatter cannot be extradited (he has to give written agreement himself under swiss law) and is unlikely to be prosecuted in switzerland.
