It's a pretty horrific decision getting rid of RVP at this point especially considering just how poor the market is at the moment. For anyone suggesting Benteke then you must be delusional if you think he's actually better than even an off form RVP.
He is not worse. And he'd be on significantly less than 250k and is only 24/25. The price will probably be his biggest 'negative' if you ask me. If we could get him for £25m I'd be happy.
Personally I think he'll end up at pool.

I would be surprised if we sell him, think he still has much to offer us. If we sell him we need to have a replacement lined up already.

Trouble with Benteke is he comes across as a player who needs to play to remain in good form when he does play, and I can't see him getting much time ahead of Wayne.

If this is true I think van Persie wants out himself. He wants to be the NT striker at the Euro's and has Huntelaar as close competitor (luckily Hiddink is gone who played RvP in midfield to use both..). He will know he's 2nd choice if he stays and I don't think he would like that.

Wondering who van Gaal will go for to replace him if he leaves.

Glad to see him go if the rumours are true, was becoming a hindrance and we need to get some dynamic forwards in.

We all love United
Are we supposed to believe this based on a newspaper report? So far none of the other papers have reported it and the Guardian got an exclusive all by themselves?

Guess most strikers are like that. Confidence is key I guess.
Chicharito don't need to play regularly in order to get a decent goals/min ratio. If only he was available..
The way I see it, Rooney will be 1st choice if Van Persie leaves, obviously, so we can wait a year or two with obtaining a top striker. We only need a Chicharito in that scenario IMO. Surely we won't revert to two strikers again.

Who knows, maybe this will keep Hernadez about for another year until the appropriate RvP replacement becomes available.

Whoever replaces him isn't likely to play much since we already have Rooney and Wilson. If we do replace him, I'd go for Higuain. 20 goal player who would blend in well with the rest of our Spanish speaking contingent.
But what's the point replacing RVP with higuain when he's no better at all and will still be on massive wages that just doesn't make sense to me.

You seriously think that Benteke is as good as van persie, even with his off form that is scary judgment to me. Benteke is not a lot more than a big lump with no pace, average control and average finishing. RVP has proven in the big games he is world class on his day and I still don't think he's as past it as people like to make out.

I hope we sign some good players because honestly I have zero confidence in Wayne being a consistent goalscorer and I have little faith in Wilson being that much of an important player so soon.

I would like that. He's almost a top striker, a super sub, and having gained some experience at Real, he's better now than last time.

I just hope it happens so I can see his happy face celebrating with Mata

Not a lot of viable options up front in the transfer window. Bacca, Vietto and Dybala all off the market as well.

Van Persie off form doesn't score. Benteke on form does. Simple maths :)

Higuain knocked in 29 goals last year and is 4 years younger than RvP.
But it's still yet to be seen how he can adapt to a new league, new culture etc so I wouldn't expect him to get more than 20 for us which I still believe RVP could easily get with proper service. Even 4 years younger he isn't a long term signing, we should hang fire this year and go with Rooney,RVP and Wilson as they will get the job done providing we make other top signings in defence and midfield. We should then look next year at properly replacing RVP as his contract is out and hope the market has improved. There no point buying for the sake of it to make minor (debatable) improvements.

RvP is passed it. Still capable of a few random flashes of brilliance this past year but even that will fade next year. Higuain is 4 years younger and still in his prime, and would probably come much cheaper in terms of wages. He'd be an excellent back up or tag team partner for Rooney, and would adapt quickly because of Rojo, Di Maria, possibly Otamendi/De Gea, Mata, Herrera, Valdes etc. Depending on how much he plays, he could easily get 20 goals.

Flogging players before the replacements are bought, we must be super confident, or stupid.....It's a hard one to call with United just now.

Right so that drought for the first half of the season is just wiped for Benteke, talk about double standards.
I don't think Benteke is better than RVP. And I don't really want him here either. It's just the way you formulated your question wich triggered my responce.

Is an on form Benteke better than an off form RVP, you asked. The answer is given, when an off form Van Persie offers feck all in terms of goals or play. An on form Benteke offers goals at least.

Edit: You didn't ask per se, but my point still stands.

I mean we will have to agree to disagree but I just don't think RVP is past it, just a year ago he was one of the best players at the world Cup and people are now painting a false reality just because he is over 30. RVP has always been a better striker to higuain and people would not have debated this a few years ago but as soon as he hits a rough patch he's just 'past it'. The main problem we have is that we do not create enough chances, creating some of the fewest in the league last year, now it doesn't matter if we stick RVP, Rooney, Higuain or Ronaldo at striker they are all going to struggle to score goals with our poor service so it should be our priority to fully sort out our defence and midfield first in order to gain more goals overall. Of that was sorted and RVP still didn't score then I would agree with you.

Yes I agree that an on form striker is better than the current RVP' but that is only because van persie isn't inform but form is temporary class is permanent and RVP still has class in abundance

The only way this can be true is we have a really big hitter lined up. A Kane or Muller.
RVP did not play a lot last season, and has been well rested over the summer. Van Gaal would be an idiot to sell him now without a massive replacement lined up.

You should have just said so.. I totally agree with that. :smirk:

Benteke will never offer what RVP can on form, but I fear those days are mostly gone.

I posted his stats for the last 6 years or something a while back and they're not lying. He's clearly not the player he was.
And in the WC he was really only great in the beginning, then he faded.

To be fair he was not long back after that injury from the Olympiakos game which saw him miss six weeks and he was lacking match sharpness. He was the top scorer from the Europe zone going into it with something like 11 goals in 10 games.

I can't sit here and tell you that for the last couple of years van persie hasen't been poor because quite simply he hasn't been anywhere near good enough and to some this combined with his age is enough to point to a decline that he will never recover from. I'm just not convinced this decline is as severe as people make out and may instead be down to other factors.

Firstly, under David Moyes two years ago we were very poor as a unit as we all know and so robins decline was not exclusive and it was instead a massive dip in the whole squad. Last year people expected a lot better but for the first half of the season Van Gaal tested new formations eg 3-5-2 and this lowered the output of all our strikers. I don't believe that RVP has been given the same amount of opportunities playing as a lone striker in a 4-3-3 as say Rooney has been given and I still believe that RVP can be the more effective striker for us. For this reason without feeling he's had the proper opportunity I just can't agree with this 'decline' message and I instead put it down to poor form, unfortunate circumstances and injures(which are still a problem I must admit).

Overall this just makes me question those that are so quick to right off van persie and turn so mid level, average strikers such as Benteke that have shown nothing compared to what RVP is capable of. He needs one more year played with Rooney and Wilson as strike options and providing we have a good window improving our defence and midfield I expect him to dramatically improve in his form and maybe even rediscover some of his very best play.

The striker market is a weak as I have seen it with very few strikers of the overall quality that RVP has. I will happily write of RVP with the rest of this forum if next year RVP is given chances to perform and doesn't provide the goods but until then he's still a top striker.

Being good for a couple of games at the WC is not a rational way to look at him. He's a month short of 32, an injury liability, not particularly adaptable to playing a different role that accommodates both him and Rooney, and at this point we should be looking towards replacing him and his high wages and generally looking towards the future. If this was RvP circa 2012-13 then I would agree he should stay, but he is no longer that player.

Exactly. Van Gaal's preferred formation is a one striker system. Rooney is the king of Old Trafford. Van Persie can only be a ridiculously highly paid second choice. Van Gaal is balancing out the squad.

Yes, I know. It's natural that he wasn't on top after a long season.
I just responded to TrustInJanuzai who stated he was one of the best players in that WC.

He might have been when I think about it though. Top 10 probably.
It's really difficult to compare a striker to a defender for example, because a striker scores the all important goals. Even if he only scored four goals.

Where is Evans going? Havent kept track.

As for RVP, I'll be sad to see him go but I understand the decision of selling him. I just hope we have a replacement in mind, I'm not sure we can go with Rooney, Wilson and injured Chicharito in next season as our strikers.

As for Arsenal fans mocking RVP, bellend Pierse Morgan especially, I'm sure he'll feel much better looking at his PL medal.

If we are playing 433 next season, probably need someone who can play wide and through the middle when Rooney needs a rest/is injured/banned. Welbeck would have been good. No idea who else could do that type of job.

excuse me if it's an obvious question, but what does an offform Benteke do?

Look like a lumbering carthorse I'd say. and not score.
