Herrera for Young and Smalling for Blind and I'd be genuinely excited. Lvg's fetish for a left footed CB puts a real downer on that IMO.
Problem with Young is, he was that bad any improvement made him look good. However he is no goal threat at all, watch him score a hat trick now. For all having a good season, how many goals did he get 1/2?

Relax guys. Blind is a good player and he's played CB before, I'm pretty sure he even played there for us last season once or twice. Jones and Evans didn't exactly have steller seasons last year and Smalling must have a knock.
Played well at CB in the World Cup, I don't get what all the laughter is about.

Nevermind, I thought Smalling was in the team that trained for the match Mitten mentioned. Why isn't he starting. :(

Yep, I checked. My mistake. I'm just confused as to why Smalling won't start this game.
Because he's way too uptight about some things. It shouldn't really need blind being torn a new one in the prem for few games to realise that it's a bad idea. For someone that admits the prem is different to what he though it is, it's incredible he thinks Blind as CB can work

The way it's written out is different then for the other games I think. Looks more like a 4-3-3 with Mata as the 10/advanced midfielder, Young right and Memphis left. We'll see I guess.

I'm going to get this in now so if anything happens it's not seen as knee jerk:

Why the hell do we keep playing Blind at CB? Fair enough because philosophy, but playing a vastly inferior player to what we have and out of position to boot because of which foot he uses is sheer stupidity.
Agree completely. CB is such a specialized position, very few can just pick it up.

Smalling and Jones looked quite good at the end of last season...or is Smalling injured?

If that is the team that faces Spurs then Herrera and especially Smalling can feel incredibly hard done by.

Blind at CB is just strange as feck. He hasnt looked comfy at all there the few times hes had to do something this pre-season. Seems like a disaster waiting to happen lol.

So this will pretty much start against Spurs right? Whist its pretty much the starting lineup against the other two teams, the CB position is weird. Unless LVG is using this as a bizarre way of protesting he needs a Left footed CB.

Maybe just maybe LVG wont start the same team vs Spurs if he sees that lineup doesnt work.

Call me crazy but it could be that.

I'm more concerned about Jones ahead of Smalling tbh. We all know LvG loves his left footers on the left.
I wouldn't worry, Smalling cemented his place last season and was praised by the manager.

No one is above anyone in the pecking order, if that were the case Schweiny is below Schneiderlin.

Underwhelmed. I know young suits the philosophy but id rather we stop pissing about and put Depay there with a natural cam behind Rooney if thats the intent.

I guess Jones is in a better physical condition than Smalling at the moment and that's why he's prefered. Blind at CB is not here to stay with Rojo and a new CB coming in, but it'd be a weird decision to play him there vs Spurs. Could cost us big time.

No its not knee jerk. Its the common sentiment around here. No herrerra as well. The player who finished so strong at the end of last season, doesn't get a start.

I am worried, if he is going to experiment around with these formations and players like he did for the first half of last season and feck it up.

I was genuinely looking forward to this season as well. Oh well, I should have factored in LVG's fetish for doing utterly stupid things, for no fecking reason.

Guys - he played Smalling and Jones together whenever they were fit last year. Calm down...
They're both fit. I was thinking the way you are now till today but he clearly stated that the line up today would be the line up for the Spurs game as far as possible. Unless we get a CB in, he will play this and see blind struggle against good opposition for some games before changing.

Perhaps Blind is just being used until Rojo comes back?

Still no idea why Jones is ahead of Smalling though.

Herrera I can understand, between him and Memphis (and others) for that no. 10 role in the 4231. Against Barca I think two holders is reasonable. Most games not, though.

LVG back to his mental tactics. Might as well write off the first 6 months of this season then.
Yes, because playing a 4-2-3-1 with Memphis behind Rooney is comparable to playing a 3-5-2

People here need to calm the feck down, it's a minor formation change and Memphis playing behind Rooney has shown loads of promise, I have no idea why so many are complaining. It's a very solid team all around, the only thing is Blind at center back, but even then, it's still only pre season, I doubt he'll be starting there come the actual season.

All you fecking moaners can go to hell with your depressing shite.

It's fecking pre-season, he want's a passer at the back. Like Mascherano playing defense, let him fecking try it in a meaningless game.

Yeah but Mascherano isn't left footed and still plays very well as a LCB :wenger:

Can't believe some of you think Van Gaal would reveal his side to Spurs 2 weeks in advance. How many times last year did he announce his starting XI ahead of a game.
