Why are people inferring Rooney is in trouble when it sounds like Jose has him in mind for 10. (I'm not watching, just reading commentary here).
He said that the most important thing for a forward is to score goals. So if Rooney isn't doing that it looks like he'll be dropped and not shoe horned into midfield. I'm sure he'll get his chance obviously. But if he doesn't perform he'll be in trouble.

I'm beginning to think (hope?) he might get rid of Rooney.

The fact he's not willing to play him in midfield is a pretty damning indication. I don't see him playing up front ahead of Ibra, Martial or even Rashford, and by the end of the transfer window I'd wager we'd have a couple of players better suited to the no.10 role.
He doesn't want to get rid of Rooney. He wants him to compete in his natural role. Mou signed for Manchester United not Rooney FC. The time when we used to play players in less demanding roles to preserve their career irrespective on whether that decision has a negative impact on our team performance or not is over. No one is bigger then the club

Jose Mourinho makes me feel that, at last, after three years we are seeing the end of muddled thinking. This is a guy who wants to win, knows how to win, and will get our players to win. No experiments, no philosophies, no process. Trophies. Love it.

I think only LVG thought Rooney would be midfield general.
Everybody else with any common sense knew he is average as a midfielder.
Rooney will have to prove himself as a striker.
You wonder if he will give him the chance to get the record and then that's it for Wayne. If Wayne starts agitating then Jose will just kick him out.

That was simply class.

Rooney's midfield experiment seems history. I think Pogba looks to be heading to United.

Squeaky umbrella time next season. Very good press conference. Speaks in a way that shows a lot of confidence and challenging whoever that questions him.

Not neccesarily, but we hope he meant it as that he can only compete for those forward positions. I don't think he would be that harsh with his words on him in midfield if he still rated him very highly as someone as van Gaal.

There's also hope that he sees him as a squad player now considering he wants us to play 433 without classic number ten(judging by the players he is signing), or at least I can't see Rooney there with Martial as wide forward and Ibra up front, and he said he doesn't see Rooney as number 8.

Anyway, I am glad this shit with Rooney in midfield is over.

He said nothing that made me think Roo is in trouble.
It is just the usual suspects hating Rooney.
He only said Rooney would play 9 - 9,5 - or 10, but never 6, and after a pause he said "never 8 either".
That's how I interpret it as well.

People in this thread calling it cringey and they haven't even seen it, "it just sounds it"

I loved it, nothing cringey about the paper, it was more sarcastic I thought. Loved the whole thing, the giggs answer, the Rooney answer, all of it. Spot on!

Hope to feck he does well here, he looks the part and already made me smile and eagerly await the season.

Started off slow, but the last 15 minutes were a fantastic insight into his plans. Man that was nice to hear.

Points I liked the most:

- He likes his specialists, we knew that already, but still it's nice to hear after Van Gaal.

- He wants 4 players, 3 have already signed. He doesn't want the 4th player to be signed on deadline day. The timing of the Fellaini and Martial transfers was ridiculous, so I'm very happy with that.

- What he said about the 49 youth players was great. Basically implied that he's an expert at limiting injuries, so he wasn't just giving debuts because he had no other choice unlike Van Gaal last year. Also said that it's a lot harder to give debuts when you're competing for trophies constantly, instead of giving young players a chance after the season went tits up like with Van Gaal last year.

- Rooney won't be deep lying playmaker, thank God for that.

In general it was very refreshing to hear him say he just wants to win, instead of constantly hiding behind objectives like 4th place and still being in stupid cup competitions like Louis did.

Would the 4th player he was talking about be that Mexican fellow?

Not as impressive yet as I thought he would in terms of brashness and filling us with confidence.

"The different one" "Not my dream job" he isn't making us drool yet !

Not your typical Mourinho press conference is it!?
I think it was clear what he was saying.

He said it is not a dream it is a reality that its the Job everyone wants. He is being slightly profound and pedantic. I am glad he is not using childish and cliche "yeah United is da best rah rah my dream"

It's the way he said it Raoul. He started off saying Rooney has changed and is no longer a striker. The only positive thing he said was that he still has the appetite for goals. He then went on to flatly rule him out of the midfield positions saying he can only play as #9 or #10. #9 is Zlatan. So its either deliver at #10 or the bench now for Rooney and given the things said, shouldn't be long before it'd the bench because Rooney is a shit #10 anyways.

It looked like Rooney wasn't safe, he will have to beat Ibrahimovic and Rashford upfront and depending on who is the 4th cornerstone player, Rooney might have to compete with Mkhitaryan too.

He won't play him at #8 or #6 and we have better #9's and #10s.

His statement sounded like he was paving the way for Rooney having a diminished role next season.

  • Anyone can pass without pressure. Meaning Rooney won't be in the midfield.
  • Sly dig at Wenger
  • Dissing idiots who go on about their philosophies

Best bits of the presser, for me. A man after my own heart. I am impressed.

Let's get Pogba and get the season started.

Bit strange that he started Rooney answer by saying that, at his age, he is maybe no longer a striker but then went on to say that he would play him at 9 or 10 (or 9 and a half)

I can only assume that he's probably going to be a squad player only
Yeah, reading between the lines there it doesn't look like he rates Rooney much. Thank feck for that.

Well considering the players he'll be competing with in his natural role I don't think he'll get much playing time. And Rooney isnt the type to accept being a squad player.

That's Rooney's problem not Mourinho's.

TBF he should be able to compete with Mkhitaryan, Perriera and Fellaini for a first team role. If not then he shouldn't be at OT.

Well that was refreshing! No bs talk. I want to win, we want to win etc. No process crap, no philosophy. No look of fear(a la Moyes) Finally we have a manger who knows what he is doing. Who knows what he is talking about. Cleared up all the misconceptions about where Rooney will play. He's a false 9, perfect. No shoehorning him into MF. No debates on here about that. Pop at Wenger. Glorious.

Absolutely brilliant presser. Started slow with nothing to prove. The dig at LVG philosophy, Wenger wining streak and telling Pep he is the best in the city and the country.

Most importantly priority is not the top four but to win the dam thing.

1. Jose said all the right things but the continuous digs at Wenger and other Mangers are childish and petty

2. I doubt his comments on youth will be greeted with excitement at the Academy. Whoever those 49 players are I hope he is not including expensive signings like Varane, Zouma

I'm so buzzed for the new season now.

He just oozes confidence surely that'll rub off onto the players. I just have a feeling we are onto a winner with mourinho as gaffer.

Can you expand, please?
He was assistant manager at Barca and had 2-3 years left on his contract, but he wanted to manage himself so he decided to leave but it was a very hard decision. Basically exactly the same situation as Giggs and he came accross as if he respected Giggs for making that call.

Why are people inferring Rooney is in trouble when it sounds like Jose has him in mind for 10. (I'm not watching, just reading commentary here).
His demeanor while saying it. Started off by saying that Rooney has been a great striker but players attributes change as they age so he doesn't see him as #9, finished by saying categorically that he will not be #6 or #8, that he could maybe play (then he paused and scrunched his face) maybe#9, maybe #10, maybe #9.5...but closer to goal.

Combine that with Zlatan signing and Rashfords emergence and you feel that Rooney is only likely to be starting as a #10. But if we assume Pogba is his 4th target then that means 3-man midfield and Rooney on the bench.

Why is everyone expecting Pogba? Can't watch the presser as in work
Because he spoke about two markets existing: Fundamental and supplementary. Also said he will breathe after this 4th signing and then look for other options.

Surely Pogba is fundamental and not from supplementary market
