I don't expect a permanent replacement but maybe just for the City game? He did play Zouma in a defensive midfield role at times when he was at Chelsea.
True but I think it was so he could nullify specific aerial threats like Fellaini. City don't have any aerial threats.

Who says Schneidelin can't recreate his Southampton form seeing as though Fellaini has been playing well. Fellaini will be a miss but hopefully it means Schneiderlin can re-establish himself.
What I have seen from Schneiderlin is that he lacks of discipline such as not in the right place when needed and tends to make so many unnecessary fouls. What Fellaini did so far is basically the opposite, he was discipline and not making too many unnecessary fouls. Those Southampton's 2 seasons form was basically when he played as a box to box. That's why there is a question mark if he's good enough for United's no6 role.

Does Fellaini injury open the doors for Phil Jones in the midfield? He has some similar attributes.
Jones only succeeded as a man-marker when playing in midfield - he doesn't have enough experience to play as a pivot next to a free-roaming Pogba (neither does Fellaini though, imo, which was bound to be found out against the better teams)

After he conceded two stupid fouls in the first half i feared he was reverting back to his old self, but he was class in the second.

Him and Pogba in MF actually looks like quite a formidable force. The amount of balls they win is just insane

Liked what I've seen so far from him in midfield, obviously the City game is a big test. He is even trying some long passes from deep which is an indication that he is working on improving that particular aspect of his game.

I was quite impressed by that when he tried some cross field passes. Came off too! Who needs Rooney ;)

Never thought I'd be concerned about a MF injury! And where the feck did he pick that up. He finished the match and walked off looking fine.

Dare I was he was Busquets like, just sitting 20 yards outside the box swallowing all their counters and clearances.

Devastating news. Here I am saying it's devastating to lose Fellaini. What a difference few months and a new manager makes. :)

So so bad, both for him who was great in last 3 games and for us. We created a working system it seems and you do have to wonder how will it work with Morgan or Carrick. Who knows maybe even Schweini could step in.

Thought the yellow was extremely rash, especially since he fell/slipped into his man. He bossed his CDM role again, very happy with his performances.

Hopefully it's something that'll be fixed during the international break. If not, Carrick against City please.

Gutted, I'd say he'd be our most important player against City as well.
Exactly. Someone to just completely dominate in the air. He'd have pushed away David Silva and the like as if they didn't exist.

I'm not so sure of Morgan as a defensive linchpin. He seems more centrally aligned as a midfielder. Not sold on him as a destroyer if asked to be one.

Carrick may be a tad too slow for City. Herrera... Maybe. But we lose height with him. Which may not affect us as City are quite a short sized team. But Herrera as a destroyer too looks shaky.

I was wondering the same. He seemed perfectly fine throughout the match.

Shame hearing about his injury. While having some wild moments making some awkward looking foul (necessarily fouls though), he is very influential in Mourinho's system as DM. Really making the role his own under. Mourinho. Again gutted about his injury.

Throwing a desperate conspiracy theory: Mourinho tried to prevent his national call up and played mind game ahead of the derby with this smokescreen.

I'll be honest despite how well he may have played up till now I wasn't confident in Fellaini being able to contain Silva and De Bruyne so may be for the best he misses the game

We'll see...

What a turnaround. Not only is he playing well, but he's finding time to run around saving women, during matches, too.

If he's to start against City, we definitely need a third midfielder alongside. They will run rings around him I fear.

This sort of thing needs its own thread mate. If it was herrera the caf would be suggesting a statue be erected.

Fair play to him, did the right thing.

Hopefully any long term injury will see Fosu Mensah added to the rotation.

This.........but the first really big test will be the Manchester derby for him if he's fit.

Definitely.

Hes been very good for a while though. At the start of last season (i think), he said he would fight for his place/ win united over/ show he deserved to play at united. Something along those lines. Finished the season first choice.

Says a lot that he has forced his way into the starting line up and is deservedly keeping much more fancied players out of the team. Thats the kind of determination we could do from a few more players really.

When he has players running at him he is a weakness, but if the opposition's only tactic is to hoof it up to a target man like yesterday he will mop up all day long.

I felt the same and felt be bad to come off at half time - after his yellow and before half time, he looked reluctant to make any tackles - completely changed after half time and was brilliant

hope his injury takes him out for a while. he was piss poor yesterday
You have to be joking. Not only did you not appreciate his performance yesterday, but youre wishing one of our players a long term injury. Disgusting.

Waiting on his back injury confirmation, hopefully it's weeks and not months.
