I do apologize for leaving out Robben/Giggs/Keane/Gullit/Van Basten from that list. Anyone of those could actually cruise into any top 10. But to claim Pele was the best is a bit like saying Tim Henman was the best ever tennis player
can you explain why?

This is so subjective. Some players are artists. For me, even though I'd say Messi is the most effective player I've ever seen, he lacks personality. Might seem like a crazy thing to say but Diego Maradona, Ronaldinho and Luis Ronaldo were all players that captured a level of romanticism that Messi can't match. Pele was too far before my time, but obviously had the best career; albeit in a different era entirely. Cristiano is obviously a beast, but my preference is for players with greater flair and artistry, and much of his effectiveness is due to his astonishing physical gifts and conditioning. Anyway....

Diego Armando Maradona.

Well, it's not really is it?
Look saying Bobby Charlton was best of all time is as stupid as saying Pele is best of all time. 2 monster players who others have utterly obliterated in last few decades in terms of ability. Roy Keane 5 times the player Charlton ever was...Pele would not even make a modern.day top 10 all time XI and that's nothing to be ashamed of

Maradona. Amongst other reasons he single handedly dragged his country yo the World Cup win in 86.

And that second goal against England

And a better athlete, more gifted physically, way stronger in the air and quicker across the turf. Basically as complete as forward can get, world class in all attributes be it technical, physical or mental.
And he could use both feet

I've no idea what a "modern day top 10 all time XI" is, so I can't say for sure.

But the Henman comparison makes no sense. Henman was a very good player at one aspect of his sport (serve-volley on grass court), but so obviously not even as good as Sampras at that aspect, let alone having the all-round abilities of the likes of Federer. Making a case for him being the GOAT would be like trying to do so for Danny Welbeck.

Not so for Pele - he had everything. Sure, his legacy is tarnished by himself trying to varnish it, and it's trendy to knock him, but it doesn't change the fact that he's up there with any player, any era (modern training methods permitted). It's more like claiming Ali was the greatest boxer of all time.

I do wish people would quit with the 'Fat Ronaldo'. I see why it's done, but there are nicer ways to differentiate between the two Ronaldos.

Or we could just add a derogatory tag to everyone. 'Impotent Pele' etc

Looks nice for the most part.

Great that you included Xavi and Yashin.

-------------------------------------

And now for the inevitable nitpicking. :D

I would place Puskas and Xavi higher one tier and add Garrincha there as well.

Gerd Müller should be in the same tier as Eusébio as should *unpopular opinion incoming* Cristiano Ronaldo.

Not sure where to place Best, isn't his combination of spectacular ability, breathtaking peak performance and not-quite-fulfilled-promise extremely close to Ronaldinho's career?

From what footage I saw, Didi and Nílton Santos should definitely be included. Bobby Moore and Maldini might have a shout too, just like Iniesta.

(Lots of hearsay involved of course, since I'm not 70+ years old)
Best started much younger than Ronaldinho and had a decent length career at the top. Problem was he finished 4 or 5 years earlier than he should have. However he did fulfill all the promise that was there he simply finished early. He had a decent length of time at the top, there were 5 seasons out of 6 in succession where he was Utds leading goal scoring despite being out wide most of the time. He had 11 years with Utd. Personally I would have him right beside Cruyff possibly a hint ahead. I was lucky enough to see both of them play live.

Can someone name me the game where you can see Pele's all-around game at his finest, for some reason he is the only great i didnt really put any research into so i reckon why not start with his finest hour.

If by 'single handedly' you mean someone else on his team scored four goals, and Diego didn't score in the Final yet they still won, then yes. I agree.

There's plenty of reasons to call Maradona the GOAT, just not sure why his teammates always had to be painted like a bunch of amateurs.

Literally the first result, jump to the 4m50s for better footage. Is it just me or it looks too easy ?

If we are talking about players that we have seen with our own eyes then it has to be Messi for me.

If I went of stories about players that are before my time then i could be any of about 5 or 6 players, depending on who you are listening to.

He reads the defender's movements so well. His mind is half a second ahead of everyone else. When he beats his man he already knows what he's going to do next, while the defenders still have to comprehend what has just happened to them.

The technical and athletic aspects of his game are frequently mentioned (and for obvious reasons), but I think his cognitive abilities were what really set him apart from his contemporaries. Or rather the oneness of perception/intelligence and coordination/movement. Just like Messi today.

not really interested in highlights reel at this point, was thinking of a full game or at least match compilation.

I say it every time this question is posed, but I refuse to believe that any person could have been better than Messi at football. Simply can't have it.

For me the GOAT's pool should consist of Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Di Stefano, Messi and fat Ronaldo.

The others are just a notch below - C.Ronaldo, Eusebio, etc.

The margins are pretty thin of course so there's always something to disagree on.
How the funk is fat Ronaldo rated above Eusebio and C. Ronaldo?

This is a question that can never be answered by just stating a name. For me, Messi is the greatest player to ever live. But I can still add a bunch of qualifiers to put others above him.

If you'd taken C.Ronaldo and Messi and given them each 3 years in Germany, England, Italy and Spain I honestly believe that Ronaldo would have a better 12 year career. Not because of some rainy Tuesday night in stoke bullshit but because he's the complete modern day footballer-athlete. It's not that I think Messi would struggle anywhere, I just happen to believe that Ronaldos game is more adaptable.

To truly compare anyone as a 'Greatest ever' it can't ever be an open and shut single word answer.

I'm happy to call Messi the greatest ever footballer, but if I'm taking part in some mythical draft of every footballer ever on their best day and I get first pick, I'd probably pick Ronaldo Lima. That period from 1996-1999 at Barca and Inter he was probably the scariest player on the planet.

Total football ring a bell? thats just one innovation
That's my point yeah, that such innovations have lead to the game becoming more tactical over time, and by extension more difficult to score in.

I agree completely. To imagine Pele playing in the front 3 of today's Barcelona and in today's much less tougher football is a frightening thought indeed.

Never saw him while he was playing, but wasn't 60s Santos basically the 06-present Barca of their time?

Just relying on what I've read about that team and era, it doesn't seem like he could've had a better supporting cast during his playing days.

Do most people really rate him up there with the likes of Pele? I suspect that number drops once you move beyond United fans and even more so once you move beyond fans from UK/Ireland.
And on the same token who outside of Brazil or SA would consider Pele one of the greatest of all time had he never played in a world cup?

Messi is about 5 times better than Pele ever was. In fact it's an insult to Messi to mention players like Pele in the same breath

But top 10 of all time would probably look something like this with Messi utterly miles ahead of everyone else

1. Messi
2. Brazilian Ronaldo
3. Zidane
4. Ronaldinho
5. Maradona
6. Pele
7. Cryuff
8. CR7
9. Rivaldo
10. Platini
You're not going to last long with statements like that
