if we dont make CL then questions have to be asked - both Moyes and LvG lost their jobs over that so why should Jose get any more time?

You are probably correct

But I can't think of any other possible available manager to take the job

Also depends on how we finish. We might end up with a couple of cups and finish strongly

Because its gets ridiculous after a period. Oh how the Cafe laughed and gasped at Chelsea and Madrid chopping and changing at a whim.

I cant believe the short term nature of our fans these days, just because we don't win something for a few years.

If another manager doesn't get the champions league with these players then the players need to be questioned.

People going on about record transfer fees. We signed four players. One of them is injured. Mkhitaryan has been missing for a month. Ibrahimovic is currently only here for a year.

I always felt we needed six players and more importantly six new starters in the team.

I think in January we need to sign two players. In the summer we need to sign four more players.

Ye I agree with that - it shouldnt be so clear cut but LvG won the FA Cup and still went so the club have set a clear precedent on the minimum expectation

It is already ridiculous - I would have actually stuck with LvG anyway

and we laughed at Chelsea and Madrid because they sacked managers who were actually successful!

Because he record in the last 5 years is still outstanding compared to Moyes and Van Gaal. Mourinho has been brilliant so far despite a poor start. It's completely outrageous to question his results already when he's only been here 5 minutes. 37 shots against Burnley suggests a team heading in the right direction. Klopp lost a ton of games when he first arrived at Liverpool and it has taken him 2 transfer windows and a year to fix Liverpool. Mourinho needs 3 more players such as Virgil Van Dijk, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Greizmann before he can be judged. The fact of the matter is that Van Gaal and Moyes did years of damage to the club and it's not going to be a quick fix. 150 million on the likes of Blind, Rojo, Fellaini, Schweinsteiger, Schneiderlin, Darmian, Memphis when we could have bought players that were available such as Vidal/Matic/De Bruyne/Lukaku/Alli/Alexis Sanches/Wanyama/Van Dijk/Firminho for that money? Truly shocking spending. The only major concern with Jose is that he will eventually marginalize the likes of Rashford/Martial/Fosu Mensah in favour of signing ready made expensive big names but if he can get us back to being a team that easily makes top 4 each season then he will have been a success and I am pretty confident next season he will turn us into that team even though we won't get top 4 this year.

Full contract this time. End of story. Who out there has better credentials that we could get in? Mourinho will get the job done.

He has a free pass this season as far as I'm concerned. All I expect is to see improvement in how we play and the beginning of a playing style. Next season he needs to be challenging for the league.

Still confident in him but it worries me he's making the same mistakes over and over with certain players and formations.

Jose should be untouchable for now. Any of the useless sacks of shite that don't understand that or don't want to play for him can feck out of the club.

To question a manager who has won everything there is to win multiple times is baffling.

As a counter-argument for this thread I'll argue if Jose can't sort us out, we truly are fecked.

Also people saying he's finished? How long has it been since he won the league convincingly? Two seasons of having a bunch of toss pots in last season's Chelsea and current United doesn't change that.

Our players are more worried about posting cute little videos on Facebook than winning games. They got mauled against Chelsea and were laughing and swapping shirts ffs. To blame the manager is just an easy excuse.

These players need to buck up and pull their weight or feck off. They won't shut up about how they want to improve for the fans but then feed us the same rubbish the next game. Jose isn't a magician, he can't score the 50 golden chances we squander a game.

For me, Mourinho's job simply does not come under threat in the short term, no matter what happens this season.

The only exception would be a parallel situation to last season at Chelsea, where the situation was clearly toxic. Results alone shouldn't see us even thinking about asking this question at this point.

I would not mind some toxicity .... the manager has every right to thrash these over pampered and under performing players to within an inch of their lives!

He should be given until it's mathematically impossible to get 4th, the board have made it very clear 4th is the minimum target.

Mourinho's big mistakes so far were only buying 4 players in pre-season and not selling more of the dead wood.

Couldn't agree more. Sick of everyone pampering to these under-performing tosspots.

The Fener, Burnley and Stoke games are all matches we should be winning even if we had no manager ffs.

Either they start performing or feck them all off. Being nice and patient to these disappointing jokes are exactly why the club is in the situation it is.
Players like Jones etc still around the club for an example.

The club has been patient with them all, much more patience than they've deserved, it's now time to start delivering or get them out. Them being so comfortable is exactly why we are in this situation.

So then if that happens, we re-enter a phase of transition between managers, systems, players, etc.

If any manager deserves some time, Mourinho has to be on that list.

If one of those late chances went in against Stoke and Burnley, I doubt many would be saying there's a problem with Jose at all. It just goes to show the fine lines at play here.

As far as the European results go, the away form has been dreadful for a while. But I think we should still qualify with 4 points out of the 2 games left. I'm not that worried if we don't qualify because it means we can focus on the league position and without the additional risks of injury (e.g. Pogba now injured) and fatigue for weekend matches.

I wish Mourinho had taken over middle of last season. That way he could have gotten an excuse wherever he finished in the table and could've learned more about his current crop of players before the window. Klopp was lucky in that way.

Are we close to it now?

We've got to stand by our managers but when does it become the point of no return?

As of now, I'm just so depressed. I wish we had sorted ourselves out properly. Why are we so shit?
Help yourself out by finding the last time ManUtd won an European away, then the last time we won in Turkey. After that, start a new thread on Mourinho.

Im not writing off Jose right now, however I will certainly question if he deserves another year if we dont qualify for the CL next season.

I dont agree with your assesment of Van Gaal either - the squad was not so bad when he left and Jose added to that. Its easy to complain with hindsight but there were high expectations for those signings last summer, not many were complaining at the time.

I argued the same despite being laughed out of court!
Im pretty certain we would be in a better position right now if we had stuck with him - although I can still understand why he went, the lack of entertainment was a major factor.

We've sacked two managers already since Ferguson without it fixing our problems. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. We're in a dip and we're just going to have to ride it out and hope it doesn't last too many more seasons.

I have no doubt we will make champion league spot. Although, the more I see what's happening now, the more I laugh at those that wanted Mourinho last December saying he will save our season. This things take time, everyone should relax. We will not fade away into history.

This insinuates Mourinho is some kind of team builder, which he isnt. He's had some fantastic sides (bar Porto relatively) and did great with Chelsea and Inter, less great in his former two stints. But he's not some renowned builder like Pochettino, Klopp for example are more likely, or even Wenger.
Not at all. He was simply the best available with an illustrious cv. Those you named weren't and aren't available. Nor are there others with the required credentials for the very specific job at hand at a club of our size.

Also, you haven't necessarily provided evidence for an inability to build a team. He hasn't really been at a club long enough to need to do that. What we do know is he can instantly lift a dressing room, play functional football with what he has and can add what the team needs to go on and win titles. Once again, it's exactly what he did as recently as the season before last.

The bit in bold is what makes me look at our current bunch of players. We're showing the same signs we did for a few years now; languid, lack of urgency/desire and bottling it come crunch time. When professional footballers can't string together a few simple passes, and it happens as often as it does with us, there are serious mentality issues in that dressing room and it'd be naive to think there's a manager who can reverse symptoms that have manifested over such a long period of time instantly.

True, but it would also be insanity if we were to hypothetically find ourselves in a situation where it's just not working and we persevere anyway due to past experiences.

Not saying that'll happen, because I still hope it won't and don't think it will, and it's absurd to even be asking as to whether we should sack Mourinho at this stage, but if there does come a time when it's needed then it's not something we should rule out because of Moyes and LVG.

I agree in principal but we need to be talking multiple seasons. In retrospect van gaal, though not universally popular, may well have been at least partially vindicated since we still, after spending even more boatload of money, have essentially the same basic problems as we had during his tenure. Basically that we're innefective in attack and still have to use a very cautious and defence oriented approach to get through games against anyone in the top eight.

Why is it only United in Transition? How's Bayern's Transition going or City's or Chelsea's or Everton's? why do United need x amount of years to do things?

Mourinho's current managerial form we'll struggle to get in the top half, Mourinho's last 26 league games he's won 8 drew 6 lost 12.

I will back him until we can't get 4th.

And you do not sign a 34 year old striker, break the transfer record or even hire Mourinho in the first place if a slow rebuild was your goal.

He has feckin spent 150 million quid and we look worse than last season. No offence but that is not acceptable. So we give him another 150 million to spend next year and it's still not right we will be in a worse position. If he gets another season he should do it with no money to spend, the only money should be from sales.
Do you realise that City have outspent us every year for like 5 seasons? We had a big summer but even then they spent 50m on Stones 37m on Sane Bravo 15m Gundogan 30m Nolito 20m and 30m on the young brazilian forward to join in January. The reality is our squad just isn't very good and poor work in the transfer market by both Moyes and LVG has left us in this state.

Because none of those clubs have had to replace the greatest club manager of all time.

Look at almost any sport, and teams that have to replace a long standing iconic coach almost always have a transition period before they are back to their best again.

Because LVG would not have given us more time himself. He was retiring after 3 years and so we could not afford him the same leeway we would for a long-term managerial potential.

As for Moyes, people have short memories. He took a team of champions, fired the coaching staff, made us rubbish and played some of the worst football I've seen from the club. He had to go, and should never have been appointed in the first place.

My best friends dad was the coach driver for Liverpool and they were winning everything at that time . I know times have changed but we don't have a right to just jump back on the horse of the greatest ride or club has ever been on. And yes that includes Busby.

Exactly. The meltdowns and sweeping write-offs after 2.5 months is truly embarrassing.

Success does not happen overnight.

My Fellow Caf members, I have but one request let’s not turn into RAWK or Bluemoon in these trying times.

A manager or player should never be immune from criticism because you like him. That’s very Rawkish.

No one is saying Mourinho should be fired now (that would be silly), but it is OK for fans to have opposing views. A big chunk of the fan base did not want this manager. I think they have a right to voice their concerns now.

I hope he turns it around but if you are being objective, right now he seems clueless despite having the most expensive squad in the world. It’s only natural for fans to be concern.

Exactly. I still think and hope Mourinho turns it around. But, the ideas some have here that he should keep his job for years no matter what the results are or that we can not properly judge him until he is able to sell everyone on the team is just insane to me. For how underwhelming we were under Van Gaal we finished 4th and 5th and we added Zlatan and Pogba. We should have high expectations for this squad.

I'm not at all concerned about Mourinho.

We've been creating a lot of chances and could easily be in the top four if chances had been taken. The quality of football has also improved from last 3 seasons. I'm not into statistics , but I have already seen more goalmouth action in a few months than probably most of last season. It's not Mourinho's fault one of the greatest goalscorers of this generation is missing sitters.

My main criticism of Mourinho is him playing with a strong squad in the Europe league. It's costing us points and injuries.

After we have failed in Europa and are mathematically out of the reckoning for a top 4 spot.
