Fergie was right, he wasn't a 'top, top player', and as good as he was as Liverpool captain, they don't appear to be missing his presence in that role either.
I wouldn't read too much into those comments, he also said Ronaldo, Giggs, Scholes and Cantona were the only world class players he ever managed. Which is obviously bullshit and contradicts the numerous times he described Keane, Giggs, Schemeichel, Vidic, Ferdinand, Stam, Van Nistelrooy, RVP, VDS, Evra, Irwin etc etc. as world class players over the years.

We can hate Gerrard all we want, and i think he's a tosser. But he was a top player for a long time. He wasn't the best around, certainly not in central midfield but he was a brilliant player and one of the best in the PL era.

Or he'd have adapted and changed his game (like Henry did at Barca for instance). If he played like a hero wannabe at Liverpool, it's because he was allowed to, at another club he probably would have played differently.
Look at his attitude, the kissing of the camera, the speech. I don't think he would've wanted to adapt. I think he enjoyed being the centre of attention, he wanted to be Roy of The Rovers. I think he was a good midfielder but in no way was he ever world class, he was the tier just below (which is no bad thing)

I didn't have the luxury of watching him often in his prime so my most memorable moments of him are the slip and the send off. Never in any sport I've followed has a rival's legend bring me so much joy.

this. obviously you lot are biased - but as a neutral - he was a brilliant player at his peak. Stayed loyal to his club too just like Giggs, Neville etc.

Mourinho tried to sign him three times. He'd have been dynamite ahead of Makelele in the same way that he moved up a couple of gears when freed up by Hamann/Mascherano/Alonso etc.
These are really good points, while he could be pretty damn indulgent at Liverpool, plenty of the time it was because his team wasn't very good. Had he moved to a better side I'm sure he would have performed to a high level in a more team orientated fashion.

He's had a less successful career than Anderson did at United.

That said he was pretty bloody great and even if I think he's a bit of an idiot, he actually continued to play for the club he supported for as long as he was useful and that's somewhat rare in the modern game with all the dosh flying around, so I think respect-worthy.

Rivalries and personal opinions aside, Gerrard was a world class player on his day! I would not mind us having a Gerrard in our squad now, he was that good.

As long as you understand how wrong you are, that's OK.
 sure. PL great with 0 medals, spent most of his time in a side that struggled to compete in anything big apart from about 2 seasons. Okkkk

Apart from when he was all ready to sign for Chelsea until actual threats of violence stopped him? More cowardly than loyal imho

Good player but highly overrated, el hadj diouf is right after all. All the Gerrard fan boys have hyped him so much over the years, he would just be a good player in a great team that's it

Moronic post. What about Shearer, Le Tiss, Zola, Ginola, McGrath etc? Credit where it's due, he was a fantastic player. If Pogba turns out to be as good we'll all be creaming ourselves.

Indeed - the problem is there are so many childish people around.

Someone has even agreed with El Hadji Diouf - enough said.

At his absolute best he was capable of winning games single handedly and for a short spell, he was for me, the best centre mid around. However, I can't even give him any begruding respect after reading the extracts from his latest book as he's so freaking unlikeble, and if I hear one more pundit say how he was a one club man I think i might stab myself in the eyes with forks.

I'm on the wind up to an extent, if you can't tell by now, but I do think he's very overrated. Worst player out of those, for sure, and I standby that he wouldn't be seen as anywhere near as good if it wasn't for scousers. Pogba will be a much more useful player game in game out if he keeps improving.

The ignore option on here was invented purely for posters like you - thankfully other more sensible posters have the option to update that accordingly - like I have just done.

Words fail me - "Worst player out of those, for sure, and I standby that he wouldn't be seen as anywhere near as good if it wasn't for scousers"

One for discussion with your fellow school mates I imagine.

Shearer has a title though. But good point regardless.

Henry was also a big arrogant cock but it never prevented him from being a team player. I think we really do underestimate the adaptability of these (good) players.
It is all hypothesis of course but I have little doubt he would have changed his game. Liverpool is where he grew up and he became their legend, basically he could do whatever he wanted. There is no way he would have been afforded that kinda freedom.

A good player at his peak. Achieved nothing of note for the past 6 or 7 years though.
