These are the kind of games where he needs to raise his performance to be considered as one of the best midfielders in the world.
Overall, he had a quiet game. It seemed like the entire team was awestruck by seeing Madrid's fluidity in the Midfield & just wasn't able to cope initially.

Consistency is the key for Herrera.

He performed extremely well in big games last season Chel, Liv, spurs was very consistent and won player of the year award. He will come good again

This is a good point but we should look at it from the weakest link in the team. Those Madrid trio might be 'better' than Atletico's but then they don't have Ronaldo, Marcelo, Benzema, Isco, Cavarjal etc to feed AND get the ball back from.

Likewise in the Utd team, based on today's game Matic, Herrera and Pogba are not getting much change from Darmian, Smalling, Lindelof and Lingard in terms of on the ball effective possession/chance creation/retention etc.

Individually the difference is neglible/not that much of a gulf in class, it's just collectively, it's add up.
Exactly, but the optimistic part is that we have a solid young core that with time will develop the cohesion and quality necesssary to dominate a team like Real Madrid. We are on the right path.

Can't understand why Fellaini gets so much hate. I know people say we should not resort to Fellaini etc. However, it's not his fault Herrera-Pogba-Lingard etc are having an absolute mare. Leaving too much space behind them all the time. Fellaini comes on and we had more control of the game. Rather than asking why we bringing on Fellaini we should be asking why Herrera not doing his job.

We all love Herrera but he speaks well 'gets' what it means to play for United but being a nice guy is not what he is at United to do. Footballer first. Gotta do it on the pitch and he was car crash last night leaving so much space behind him by doing his pointless one man pressing. His teammates didn't help but Fellaini came in and took up smart positions and stuck to them because he knows his game. I don't think Fellaini is the best midfielder ever but he more often than not makes an impact or a difference after those ahead of him flatter to deceive. Players like Pogba and Herrera, Lingard need to step up this season and if they don't, we shouldn't crucify Fellaini for it.

That Real side has had three years of squad stability to hit the level they are on currently. Its a miracle that with all our constant upheaval for our past 3 seasons they never looked like taking us to the cleaners. And that should be something to be proud about. We are behind but not helplessly behind. They have provides something to aspire to. With focus and togetherness our squad can get their too.

I think last night was simply a combination of Ander looking a bit rusty and playing against the best midfield in club football. Ander isn't as good as Kroos - Modric obviously, but then again very few players are. Ander is still a class player and will prove so through the season. Has everyone forgotten already he was our best midfielder last year?

Herrera's problem is his mentality. He did seem like he believed in his ability to turn and pick out a pass. When you compare him to Matic, there is no difference in individual quality but Matic believes in Matic.

I would like to see that form continuing into the Champions League. Matic was head & shoulders above him in the match yesterday.

I'm not a massive fan of Herrera I have said that on a few occasions. But our midfield 3 got swarmed yesterday by Darmian picking up Lingard covering Darmain and essentially our two centre backs being spare. Firstly anyone thinking Darmian (who didn't have a bad game last night) contributes enough (offensively we need an option coming from deep) or Lingard is good enough is delusional. Yes Herrera was poor but he wasn't helped by those around him just the same as Matic and Pogba.

Didn't have a great game vs Real but I actually forgot that he's quite a good crosser, and should get in crossing positions more often this season now he's not the deepest midfielder.

ANDERwhelming performance from Herrera. He will need to up his game if he's to challenge for a starter position considering Matić can pretty much do all he can and more.

He will need to bring out his Athletic days offensive game and he will need to work on his long range shooting because atm it's pretty atrocious.

Expected one of the midfield 3 to be dropped in a home game against West Ham when we don't really need a midfield 3, so it probably had to be him. Fully expect Herrera to come back in against tougher sides and away games.

I'd be surprised if he didn't feature at all this afternoon though. His energy in the last 20-30 minutes could be handy.

Not a natural holding playing. His omission from the starting lineup makes sense, especially as we're playing a 4231. Matic may not be as dynamic as Herrera, but he reads the game a lot better, and very rarely gets caught out of position.

I suspect Herrera was our Matic alternative last year, as per this this comment, and he'll have a fight on his hands to stay as a regular in this team.
“When I joined Manchester United last year, I thought immediately that we needed a kind of Matic. There are not many, there are just a couple, but I thought that.
But I was not thinking of it because I always thought I never like to go to players that I think are an impossible mission, and I felt there was no chance."
Will definitely be used in the big games when we choose to be destructive though.

Yeah expected this. He'll be playing against every top side though so no sweat. We don't need 3 in midfield at home to West Ham so out of the 3 it makes most sense for him to miss out.

Yeah this is how I feel. I think the middle three will be a choice between him and Fellaini (unless injuries occur) for those games.

He will. I think we will see more of today though in the home games in that Herrera probably won't play in all of them. He will play pretty much every away game and the top teams though.

I said it in the Matic thread but I knew/feared for Herrera's minutes with Nemanja's arrival and so it proves so far.

Having said that, as great as Matic was today, he was a one man wrecking ball and everywhere, which was fantastic but going forward, we/he should or rather can be a bit more restrained because it's gonna be a looooong season.

Hopefully Mourinho does some proper rotation and gives good minutes and starts to the squad, not just end of game stuff.

So, how reduced do we expect Herrera's starts to be this season?

Game was completely killed by time he came on but he had a 'nice' cameo.

Played a potentially awkward ball on the right byline to a good first time pass over a defender to Pogba at the end and made a few interceptions.

Im expecting him to start the bigger matches. If he doesnt, it will be a shame given how good he was at them last season.

Remember how silly how the situation became towards the end of last season because we did not have any quality CM bench strength? Compare that with Real Madrid or Man City.

He'll get plenty of games. In a 3 and when Matic/Pogba pick up injuries or require resting.

He seems like he'll be second choice for quite a few positions but not part of the best team. Shame for him.

After last week i dont think Jose wanted to change the team. Martial did well but he started on the bench.

Something that i've noticed is its not Matic whos allowing Pogba to push forward its the introduction of the third man in midfield. Take today, as soon as Felliani came on Pogba pushed up and was almost playing along side Martial and Miki. Jose knows he needs to build a team around Pogba and it seems playing in a midfield three does that. I suspect in bigger games he will have a three of Matic, Herrera and Pogba with Pogba playing the most further forward.

Against sides we should be beating i like that Jose is sticking with a midfield 2.

Think we might need a three man midfield against Stoke coming up. Not sure about Leicester as they are quite open. Teams like Everton, Liverpool, Spurs, Chelsea definitely.
