Do you guys think McGregor went with the wrong plan? What if he waited the first few rounds for Floyd to come at him and not waste all of his energy and then try to counter?

Yeah definitely don't want the woman beater to be one laying there with his face 'torn open'.

This wasn't a sporting spectacle. It was a marketing gimmick. Obviously Mayweather wasn't going to lose to a guy who isn't even a boxer.

Priorities I guess...

I have big bets on Mayweather TKO and under 9.5 rounds. Placed them when the lines were released so evens and 11/10 respectively. Also have Mayweather to win as the last leg of a few accumulators producing pretty nice payouts.

The more reading I do on this fight the more I believe Mayweather will take this to the decision, but I also feel he'll be able to finish the fight, if he wants to, at any stage after the 5th round or so.

Now I'm inclined to cover my bets on Mayweather by decision which is currently 3/1 at betfair.

Do any resident Boxing experts have opinions on my predicament.
Won both bets (just about). Ended up covering on Mayweather to win in 9-12...which won along with the original 2. Happy days.

Clearly what he meant is beating each other up when one side is massively superior, it's like a grown man beating a teenager.
That's not really what happened here though. Boxers knock other boxers out cold in the first round and if Floyd was so dominant, he would've done the same against Conor who isn't even a boxer. Instead he opted to take the fight 10 rounds.

That’s not really true though is it. Neither really got beat up or hurt. Conor would make light work of him if it was a real fight.

Before round 9 the fight was fair enough, we all bought into it and are complicit in this event. But when one guy is just punching an all but defenseless person in the head for long periods (round 9), I personally can't see the justification.

I quite liked Floyd's gameplan. Walked forward in straight lines from round 4 onwards - no respect at all for anything come back the other way.

Conor should've definitely paced himself a bit more, which was entirely possible since Floyd was his usual defensive self.

Floyd isnt't the type. He fights to win. Had McGregor done that he would still dance around and make Conor impatient, knowing he'd tire earlier with all the extra weight he's carrying.

The biggest winner of tonight is the UFC.

A long night of boring boxing fights, until the one of the main event, between the retiring boxer and the MMA fighter, who will go back to the UFC, bringing a shit load of new fans alongside.

Nevermind all the publicity during the whole charade. Great biz from Dana.

The thing is, I don't even think McGregor's work-rate was that high in the first few rounds. Not like he was throwing 100 punches a round or anything like that.

Its fecking mental how wrapped up and emotionally invested people can get in a meaningless sporting event.

Regardless of the outcome, it's over. I read one comment on facebook from an Australian on McGregors feed after the fight that said "feck Ireland"

Why? People need to catch a grip.

No matter what Conor did, Floyd would have measured him for the first four or so rounds like he usually does, then adjust and run away after the 6th. The thing about Conor is that even if he didn't gas hard, his punches had no power left and Floyd was just toying with him at the end.

Mayweather was the perfect anger management programme. He left Mcgregor vent the anger only to then deliver the consequences of his actions.

Probably correct

That undercard was dire

The very worst UFC cards had way more entertainment than tonight's undercard

Was pretty funny listening to all that nonsense leading up to this fight. Chris van Heerden and Paulie Malignaggi weren't that impressed with McGregor's power. I think that says enough.
So the lads that McGregor has KO'd so far in MMA all have glass chins?

Fair bit of nonsense flying around after the fight now too, in fairness.

The financial incentive played a part. If there was real hard feeling between them Floyd could have won inside 5 or 6. He didnt even attempt to box in the first 3 rounds and when he finally did, not even bothered to guard himself. Utter disrespect.

Is the bit that really bothered me.

As others have pointed out, combat sports aren't really for me, but there was no need for that last round. It was just for spectacle and the only possible outcome was further danger to the health of one of the competitors.

There are technical snoozefests in MMA, too.

Yes. He could have used Paulie to his advantage; he could have used proper boxing coaches; he could have been more patient; but the main thing that failed him was his technique. He gave a decent account of himself tonight, but the fight wasn't close. McGregor was landing shots that missed or hit Floyd's gloves and arms... And when he did connect, there was very little power, though that uppercut he landed in the early rounds was nasty.

100%

I would say if you're going to take on a boxer in your first ever professional boxing match don't pick one of the best boxers of all time. I think that's where it went wrong in a sporting sense.

In another sense he just got paid $100M + to dance around a boxing ring for 30 minutes. Never really going to be a defeat is it.

Conor wasn't that hurt, he just blew up and ran out of steam. Yeah if they were to actually fight, Conor would put him in a coma.

Why shouldn't he have been allowed it? Floyd was as greedy for the cash as McGregor.
Because I think these sports have a duty not to offer financial incentive to people clearly ill-equipped to compete with each other, given the danger.

I disagree with that personally.
For me, as a boxing fan, it just showed the huge gap between boxing and MMA. Both physically and mentally, Mcgregor was way out of his depth.

McGregor was full of excuses in his interview. It was clear he was finished, the ref was protecting him.

He would have been flat on his arse and possibly rushed to hospital if went another round.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat.

Put Floyd in the octagon and he'll lose inside a minute. Boxing and MMA are completely difference sports, let Conor use elbows/kicks/clinch/take downs and Floyd stands no chance. Gap between boxing and MMA, my arse.

MMA fighters aren't boxers; infact boxing is just one of many subcomponents of MMA along with the likes of kickboxing, jiu-jitsu, wrestling, and others. That's why its extremely impressive for a non-professional boxer to fight one of the all time greats and make a decent fight of it.

Yup. Would be a far bigger mismatch if this was in the Octagon.

Any idea as to where the next big boxing fight comes from?

I don't recall the last time I bothered to watch one that didn't involve Mayweather.

The same guys he's KO'd with 4-ounce gloves on, not to forget the different mechanics between MMA and boxing. You didn't read my post properly, which led you to forming a strawman. Fwiw, Paulie said:
"Eight rounds, good work. I can’t disclose too much but McGregor is no dummy... There’s a method to his madness. He has an idea of what he wants to do and how he wants to do it, he’s not clueless. He’s not your conventional boxer by any means but he’s capable and his power is good. Whether that can be effective is up to him, but he’s no dummy," Malignaggi told Michael Woods of NYFights.com.
Not exactly high praise for someone who supposedly has power that fighters like Cotto, Canelo, Mosley, etc. don't possess. And let's be real here, Conor's KO power - along with his precision - is deadly in the octagon, but boxing is completely different. Why do you think his technique was poor against Mayweather? There's levels to this shit, that's why.
