Actually, many of his injuries was caused by his own recklessness. He didn't have to throw himself down like that yesterday for the tackle that got him this serious injury.

He must read the game better and compose himself more without committing to tackle at first instance. For yesterday injury, he should have allow the play to develop and take charge at later opportunity without commit to the challenge so recklessly. Something like how Ferdinand play where he seldom need to commit himself to tackle. Jones can definitely play like that because he has the speed but sadly without much intelligent.

There are bunches of top class players who made their name by throwing themselves. There ain't many Rio type of defense out there, so it's not like every CB with pontential just can become one if they want to. It's just the case of Jones was born with a body imcompatible to his playing style.

Edit: someone with a style that is supposed to be closer to your description like Johnny Evans couldn't help himself with injuries.

Those top class defenders have the body to play that way throwing themselves into tackles.

But not Jones, and he should change a bit of the way he plays. Many of his injuries are self inflicted and could be avoided. I'm not saying he will miraculously able to stay fit if he changed his style but I'm just saying some of his injuries can be avoided.

I think it's obvious we couldn't rely on him with his record. Mou signed Lindelof knowing we are always short at CB.

Lindelof has so far shown himself to be trash, though.. I think Bailly is one of our future two, so we just need that other one. In an alternate reality we signed Bonucci and sold Jones.

Problem is these top quality defenders are so rare and when one is available, we can't sign them.

I know what you meant, but just like situation during the game, you never know for sure whether do 80% would be enough. Jones' style is all, about exerting himself 100%. It's not something that can be trained. And some of his injuries were not during games, which creeked injury proneness, that's nothing we can do about. Just like my previous said, some players were not born with the body compatible with their talent. There are plenty of what ifs cases in football.

Shame about the injury and let's hope it's not too serious. That said, I'm not sure Jones will ever complete a season without at least a few periods of being injured.

Somebody mentioned earlier it's rumored to be quad injury which is another bitch of an injury.

Not read anything but we all knew there was always another injury waiting around the corner....

It's fecking ridiculous how many United fans have a preconceived idea about Jones and are desperate to be proven right about it. Yes, Jones is injury prone. But it's not due to his style of play. It's just down to his biology.

That's his last action about 10 seconds before his substitution. No diving in. No recklessness. No fault on his part at all. But, yeah. Let's stick to the childish narrative that somebody once decided was true and ignore any evidence to the contrary.

Thank you, this is a great post.

People often form opinions upon misguided preconceptions. There's nothing wrong with Jones' fecking style of play, he seems to be injury prone and maybe he should have been rested longer but that's it.

You're right. The majority of his injuries have absolutely nothing to do with jumping in to tackles or his playing style.

Its got nothing to do with fickleness; he is actually a very good defender, but far too injury prone to keep at the club.
This. He is not backup player on 20k per week who is your 6th choice . He is expensive and really very good defender on whom you count to be your first choice. You prepare your defence and formation with him in the squad. And every few games he can't play. feck that.

Laporte is available with a release clause of around 60m. Great passer and very solid defender and young enough to anchor our defence for a decade. Jonathan Tah is a great up and coming CB, big and strong and very quick for a giant. There's tons of CBs available that would improve our team so we don't have to put up with injury prone players like Jones or incompetent players like Lindelof. The only way Jones deserves the 150k per week that he's demanding is if it's on a pay for play basis.

We wouldn't have lost at the weekend if Jones didn't go off injured. He really has been very good this season.

Great news he's fit. If Bailly is also available for Spurs game I have much more confidence now.

On the bench against Swansea. Very relieved, thought he was gonna be out for a long time after seeing his reaction. Need him ready to face Kane on Saturday.

Even if Jones is injury prone, don't see why we should offload him before some of the defenders we have ?

I wouldn't look to sell him however I wouldn't renew his contract at the 150k per week that he's demanding. I would offer him a fair wage something in the area of 100k base with a bonus component for appearances and trophies. If Jones is being greedy and continues to demand 150k per week then I would sell him and replace him. He isn't irreplaceable and shouldn't hold us to ransom given his injury record. In today's market, we should be able to get 35m to 40m for him if we needed to sell him.

Has he ever had a left quadricep injury before? I don't know if he keeps getting the same injury over and over again or if it's a new thing each time. Don't know which scenario is worse, to be honest.
Considering his history of 278371 injuries it would be surprising if he hadn't injured every part of his body at least once in the past.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho believes defender Phil Jones will be ready to face Tottenham in Saturday's blockbuster Premier League clash.

Jones limped off with an apparent thigh injury in United's shock 2-1 defeat at newly-promoted Huddersfield Town last week but the Englishman was on the bench for Tuesday's 2-0 EFL Cup victory over Swansea City.

And Mourinho said Jones – who has not missed a Premier League match this season – is in line to take on visiting Spurs, who are level on points with second-placed United.

"It was quite comfortable and no injuries," said Mourinho. "So a good day for us.

I understand why Jose trusts him and relies on him. Phil is one of the best CB in our team and in the league. Probably Mourinho hopes Jones will stop getting injuries, but it will never stop, unfortunately. We should try Rojo (if he is good when he recovers), Lindelof (when he improves his perfomance) or buy a top CB next January/summer.

Honestly, you can say that about many other players and situations too. Caftards are obsessed with being proven right.

Do you have the 5 seconds prior to that gif @Dante as it’s was the original tackle that lead to that tussle in which I think he sustained the injury.

We shouldn't rely on Jones because of injuries but we should maybe rely on Rojo who has missed 70 games through injury in his three seasons at the club?

Looked to me at the time that he hurt himself during the gif. It was the way he came away with the ball slightly off balance and put a lot of weight through one leg. He certainly started grimacing and favouring his leg the moment that gif ended.

I don't think we'd have lost if José had subbed Blind on instead of Lindelof, too.

Players get injured all the time. Especially injury-prone players. But the opinion that it's because of an unusual level of recklessness is simply wrong.

I don't know why Jones gets so many injuries, whether it's because he throws his body on the line more than anyone else or because he's injury prone or both.

One thing I know is that I don't want him to change. I'd rather a defender puts his body on the line and gives 100% than not. Jones might make an error or two (as do all our defenders), but the amount of last minute tackles or blocks more than make up for it. When he does have a run of games, the makes very few mistakes.

We are a better team with him in it.

That's a ridiculous statement. Should we get rid of Eric Bailly as well so just because he picks up a few injuries?

I don't think putting your body on the line is reckless. I'd much rather a defender did that then not.

Maybe so. But Jones has been terrific so I'd much rather have him in the team than Blind any day.
As much as I like Blind I agree. Blind and Smalling also have a good understanding as seen a couple of season ago and, for one game, I think it'd have been fine. Blind has never really made any costly mistakes when played at CB.

Was very shocked he was on the bench yesterday, having gone off against Huddersfield.

Very good news it was nothing serious, though. Will need him against Spurs and Chelsea.
