Most consistent performer at the club in the last month probably. I’m glad the hate has died down. Seemed his only ‘crime’ was being from Warrington and United from the cradle.

Yea but sample size matters. Right now, he's in good run of goalscoring form but I don't believe that he can do it over a full season. Martial too got off to an amazing start this season, but once he started playing more games, his form faded. I'm pretty sure same thing would happen to Lingard if he started most of our games.
I dont see why he cant be one of our main players for years to come. He is not a expensive exotic player we bought, but thats not a good reason for him not being able to push on. I know people would like to upgrade him to a bigger name, but he is making himself a big name and we should all be proud. Give him the 7 I say.

A perfect example of fans sometimes being able to see something a manger can't.

Myself and others repeatedly pointed out he wasn't a right winger. Guy finally gets switched to a central position(even then it was only because all other options were injured or terrible) and his performances and stats get consistently better.

While I'm very happy with his form and some performances lately, I don't think he's good enough technically for the level we aspire to be (also with Lukaku to a greater extent). It has nothing to do with him being English or homegrown. I really do wish that we would produce a world class academy player (I guess Pogba sorta counts) but Lingard isn't that player. As it stands, I think he's a good squad player who has definitely earned the right to start the next few matches based on form. But I'm not going to go overboard and claim him to be a building piece for a top European side. I'm not trying to hate on him while he's in good form and I'm not trying to discredit his form. I just don't think he's magically transformed into a much better player. There'll be a regression at some point and a good majority of this forum will turn on him again.

My problem with some opinions on Lingard is that it seems impossible for him to keep going and improving. What do you guys know that I dont know? I know he works hard to better himself like hopefully everyone playing for us. For me it sounds like his just not cool enough to be a star. Not one has presented a good reason for why Lingard cant be a star for us.

Once again, nothing to do with his personality/character or background or whatever. I judge players' potential by their technical ability, skill, physical attributes, and mindset to improve themselves. With Lingard, it's the technical ability part that I think limits his potential.

He makes lot of difference to the team. His movement and ability to receive passes in tight spaces makes attacking fluid.

In last few weeks he has become the most important attacker in the team and that's on merit.

Only RC can have a player win us a point with two goals. One with flair, one with grit, and have people in here taking him down. Without him, today would be real different. Power to Lingard, more goals to come.

Yeah I'm sure that's exactly what happened.

Its more like a case of Jesse taking advantage of others underperforming in that role.

He may lack technical skills but his determination, work rate and more than one occassion, his finishing is pretty superb at times.

It seems no player wants to play out wide anymore, hence the interest on such playerd like Alex Sandro and Ryan Segsenon. Only fbs seem to play out wide nowadays.

2 great goals today! His best season for us by a mile and he saved us again but we aren’t playing well overall as a team. I hope he can keep it up because it has to come from somewhere for us. If by some total miracle he becomes a really consistent top player I can only say fair play to him, I wasn’t too gone on him at the start of the season. He’s fairly proving me wrong though. I love to see our players doing well. If only there were a few more and possibly a manager we could say that about at the minute

He's proving that he deserves a future here imo. Whether that's as a squad player so what.. he's versatile enough to warrant persisting with and he's actually performing in clutch scenarios. Happy for the lad.

I actually differ a bit, Lingard has a role to play and that role is playing off a main striker, someone who holds the ball up and lets Lingard run and find the space.

You'll notice that a lot that Lingard's weakness's are exacerbated because of the midfield role we've continually asked him to play. His striking technique, finishing and ability to find space is almost second to none in our current squad, add to that the fact that he'll press from the top, I'd wager he'd make for a brilliant supporting act to a hold the ball up striker.

While this might sound like a football manager-esque rant, there is a vital difference between the #10 role our formation has and the support striker position that I explained above. The #10 in our team would have to shoulder some creative capability, finding the right pass for Lukaku or Martial/Rashford to run on to or even to switch play when it gets too crowded in the middle.

Having Lingard play there or on the wings would cause concern because Lingard isn't the best at finding the right pass or even if he notices it, he doesn't execute it with the frequency expected off a #10 for a top side. However relieve him off these issues, probably get him to run onto the ball and finish it you'd have a brilliant player with atleast 20 goals per season in him.

As ludicrous as this sounds, you'd have him posting Rooney like numbers if you put him in that Rooney-like position.

Nothing against him, since I actually think he has enough value to be a part of our squad for years to come, but when in three games you have to rely on Lingard and not in our 80M+ players to open the match, you really have to think that maybe our transfer policy was not that good,

Yeah that's right. It had nothing to do with his total lack of contribution on the football pitch other than "intelligent running". The fact the criticism has gone away as soon as he's started producing goals and assists is neither here nor there right?

I put exactly that in the post you replied to.

In anycase I think you've misunderstood. Some fans knew he wasn't a right winger all along. I posted this about a year ago and I repeated it several times over a period of months.

Anybody whose watched Lingard come through can tell you he's not a right winger. Anybody who watches him right now could tell you he's not either.

Yeah Middlesborough were poor but we've faced plenty of poor teams this year and I don't think any other player has carried the ball through the center and drove us up the pitch like Lingard did.
Can anybody argue he looks twice the player in a central role? Unfortunately it took the manager a fair bit longer to see this.

Am I the only one who's shocked by the opinions that he "may lack technical ability"? Really? His touch, his quick feet, his awarness. I think that's his main assets. I really like him. No, I don't think he will be a superstar but he's a really good footballer.

You can't deny that thousands upon thousands of eyes and brains can indeed spot something a handful of people might've missed. In theory, at least.

Re-Lingard: I think it goes to show what good off the ball movement can do for you.

Yeah it's far from truth. His technical ability is good, his ability to receive passes in tight areas and his link up play proves that.

Maybe people think he lacks technical ability as he isn't a great dribbler.

He's doing ok in a mis-firing attack.

He is proving that working hard and commitment and effort are sometimes all you need to prosper.

As well has he has done lately, still some obvious flaws. He cant pick a pass to save his life and he missed an open goal to kill the game off against Leicester.

He is our in form forward at the minute, no doubt. Keep playing him centrally, quite clear he is only effective there. Out wide, he's non existent.

Youth player come good, I'd keep ahold of him as a squad option for the AM role and sign a natural RW.

Made some haters think twice for sure. He's never going to be the answer as a world class AM, but he's proving useful

We can't stop here. This is bat country.
He’s a very well rounded player. I don’t think he yet has anything in his game that you would highlight as outstanding in quality, but he does many things very well.

Definitely criticised far too much but such is the nature of modern football discussion.

He should be idolised. Local boy done good. He won us the FA Cup ffs. I always think that got buried a bit with all the focus on Van Gaal’s departure a day later. Let’s hope his career here is littered with such moments.

This. Also he could be a superstar, but it depends how you define a superstar.

So far, he is outperforming all of our other youth players, including the superstar Pogba, who most of the time is either injured, suspended or doing his haircut.

Don't want to sound too critical to the Frenchman, but he really needs to look at all the work Lingard puts in and take note. Pogba seems to really believe in his own hype and sometimes becomes lazy during games, which severely irritates me. I still haven't seen him win us a game single-handedly like a true world class player could.

He may not be an elite level player but Lingard is technically solid.

I am a big fan of the kid and I am happy to see how his game is developing. When it comes to hardworking, versatile, useful-when-the-s**t-hits-the-fan, kind of players, Lingard will become one of the best in the world. And make no mistake about it, despite our love for the romantic aspects of the game, such players will remain essential in football.

Fans are having their senses twisted in regards to technical ability because of the way Peps teams play.

They forget the likes of Gary Neville and David Beckham rising to be the best at what they did despite having limited technical ability. Sheer hard work, practice and playing to their strengths developed them. There’s absolutely no reason Lingard cannot aspire to those levels too, given the right support, team setup and coaching. It’s not like he’s Jesse one-leg as some seem to think

Same here. It’s like some can’t give praise without a throw away comment/ put-down at the same time. As my old mom used to say “if you can’t say anything constructive get the feck off my forum board”

Am I the only who finds her to be a tad artificial? I mean look at those eye-lashes. Can't figure out if she's pretty or not. A pic without make-up on would have been much more informative

When did lack of technical ability limit Gary Neville or David Beckham?

He is like Teddy. He finds space. I remember Giggs talking about him when he came through when LVG was here and saying how good a player he is and that his vision is very good and he creates a lot of space too. His ability to hit the ball in very tight spots is amazing. His volleying is very good. He should play centrally now.
