Problem with Conte is it seems he's identified players who are extremely difficult to get hold of at the moment. Sandro wasn't going to be sold by Juve in the summer, Nainggolan wasn't leaving Rome, Bonucci wasn't leaving Italy, Napoli were unwilling to sell Koulibaly, but Vidal we may get in the summer.I'm actually struggling to think of any outright Conte signings. Maybe Alonso and Zappacosta which he will have known well from Italy. Morata he obviously knew but the club would likely have been after him anyways with Lukaku off the table.
As Conte often says, all he does is recommend targets to the club and they decide what to do. His official title is "First Team Head Coach" rather than manager, after all. Pretty annoying.
I don't know the exact targets Conte wanted, but barring the ones above, the other targets were kind of underwhelming such as Danilo (wanted to play under Pep anyway), Candreva, Llorente. It's very difficult to know who exactly his legit targets were, but some of our fans continue to blame the board when it's been reported they tried for Sandro in the summer, and Nainggolan, and Koulibaly the previous summer and were negotiating with a brick wall at the time.
People who blame the board need to realise that the club need to be sure that a player is right for Chelsea. The manager isn't always correct in selecting players, and there's scouts and a myriad of other experts at the club who identify players of high calibre. No, the club aren't always going to recruit players who will end up being top class, but for the most part we've recruited really well.
