I'm actually struggling to think of any outright Conte signings. Maybe Alonso and Zappacosta which he will have known well from Italy. Morata he obviously knew but the club would likely have been after him anyways with Lukaku off the table.

As Conte often says, all he does is recommend targets to the club and they decide what to do. His official title is "First Team Head Coach" rather than manager, after all. Pretty annoying.
Problem with Conte is it seems he's identified players who are extremely difficult to get hold of at the moment. Sandro wasn't going to be sold by Juve in the summer, Nainggolan wasn't leaving Rome, Bonucci wasn't leaving Italy, Napoli were unwilling to sell Koulibaly, but Vidal we may get in the summer.

I don't know the exact targets Conte wanted, but barring the ones above, the other targets were kind of underwhelming such as Danilo (wanted to play under Pep anyway), Candreva, Llorente. It's very difficult to know who exactly his legit targets were, but some of our fans continue to blame the board when it's been reported they tried for Sandro in the summer, and Nainggolan, and Koulibaly the previous summer and were negotiating with a brick wall at the time.

People who blame the board need to realise that the club need to be sure that a player is right for Chelsea. The manager isn't always correct in selecting players, and there's scouts and a myriad of other experts at the club who identify players of high calibre. No, the club aren't always going to recruit players who will end up being top class, but for the most part we've recruited really well.

For that fee it is a fairly low risk gamble. Gives them another creative option, can be used to back up Fabregas. They can move him on, probably for a profit knowing Chelsea in a year if it does not work out.

Low risk gamble. To get a young English player with potential for that price is a good deal. Even if it doesnt work out there is a sell on value there

Never been convinced by him, he's got a lot of good attributes but I'm not sure he's got the footballing nous to put them together.

I think it's a great bit of business. £15 million for a player with the potential ceiling of talent like Barkley is a steal.

Plus they needed a signing to replace the car crash signing that has been Bakayoko so far.

Conte probably asked the club for an attacking midfielder and they got him Barkley. That must be how they got Drinkwater; he asked to club to get him a deep lying playmaker and they got him
Problem is, it's not that simple to find those kind of players who are going to come in and make an impact for a club like Chelsea. Face it, almost every top club is reluctant to pay out so much money for a talent if there's no guarantee they will succeed. The market is so crazy it's important to be smart about the purchases a club makes.

So Barkley moves to Chelsea for £15 million and people are on here telling me that you can't get players who would help our title bid for £25 million or less. Okay then.
Yeah because Barkley will help us with our title bid.

You could have Superman and The Flash upfront and you'd still not win the league this season.
Right, and adding average players to our squad before Mourinho arrived is the reason why we are in our current position.

Conte will get out of there soon because Chelsea are about to sink.

Nah, City having the best start to the season in the history of everything is why you are in your current position.
Second place is good but the squad should be stronger than it is. That’s Van gaal’s fault.

Chelsea will likely line up this way:

GK
CB CB CB
RB CM Kante LB
Barkley
Morata Hazard

We should have tried him to be honest. He would have good with Pogba and Matic in a midfield three.
Stretching the pitch, eh?

He's talented and I rated him highly when he was younger but he's been extremely disappointing since. Feel Chelsea could aim higher. He may fit in better at a bigger club though.

Chelsea fans : where does he fit in?
There is more and more indication from Conte that he wants to shift to a 3-5-2. I guess he would be the creative midfielder.
Cesc, willian, pedro are 30 (31 by the end of the season), 29 and 30 respectively. I guess barkley and RLC will replace them. Add Kante, Baka and DD, those are 5/6 (I guess cesc would stay while willian and pedro might be sold) for the 3 midfield positions. Gives us some creativity and most importantly goals from the midfield, something that we have been lacking sorely.

Point is being english and the tag of ross barkley will ATLEAST let us recoup the 15mil irrespective of barkley's career taking off or not. So its worth a punt. But do agree about us aiming higher. Sadly our transfers have been well buying tier 2/3 players but getting the best out of them. Alonso, Michy, Zapa, Drinkwater, Barkley - you would not have guessed on any of them being a chelsea player 2 years ago.

Jose's going to be looking for a new job soon isn't he? He's left the family in Chelsea, maybe he fancies a third go.
Heard he’s enjoying his hotel stay in Manchester so perhaps not :).

Chelsea will definitely not sink. They are extremely good at bouncing back and recruiting the right players and managers. Every time you think they are in a crisis they go on to win major trophies the next season.

Nonchalantly scoring the winner...
Chelsea with another bargain.

Barkley for 15m is sensational value. Like him or not, Abramovich is a badass in the transfer window.

He sells high and buys low with amazing consistency - Woodward take note!

Hardly a sensational value for a player 6 months til the contract is up. Good squad player nothing more.

Yes. If Utd and Chelsea want to compete with City they can no longer rely on just matching or outspending them in the market. Picking up bargains, finding players on the verge of breaking through, securing the best players coming to the end of their contract. Have to run a smarter operation.

What is the law to say he has to sign in the summer window? A bit odd. I am sure there was some kind of deal between the club, the player and his agent which would reward them financially if they joined in Jan rather than summer.

I guess it's tapping up to agree a fee and then negotiate a deal that requires the player not to sign now or for that fee. How do you even prove that though

Good player. it all revolves around his apatite now though. He can be a great player but he will have to work hard to achieve that.

Its almost as if we have midfielders who people have been complaining about this season and having another player with talent to come in and try to do better might yield results. But no of course only Messi could contribute over the course of a season.

Good bit of business for Chelsea it’s a win win at that price even if he flops they’d recoup £15m easily.

Personally think Chelsea would of been much better recalling RLC and giving him a chance.

I fid it strange he is signing alongside Marina, seems to be an indication that it is not Conte's choice.
I'm sceptical on this purchase, the price is low yet he recently had hamstring surgery so for me a wait and see.

Isnt she in charge of transfers? Wasn't she the one that Hazard signed next to?
