Black players are regularly subject to accusations of 'attitude' which absolutely has something to do with their colour.

Some of the Memphis Depay comments were disgraceful when he was here. His "gangster" image being a definite example of this sort of thing.
Memphis another prime example.

It's got feck all to do with race as far as I'm concerned. It would be stupid as we're of the same. I've seen plenty of caucasian with weird behavior on and off the pitch and they get criticized just the same when their football isn't great.

How can his engagement on social media be a negative on him? It's part of who he is as a person and as a brand. United and adidas tapped into his personality, brand and social media engagement when he re-signed for United a couple years ago. The club and Jose knew what they were getting. Yes, his form has been very off the past few weeks but these are poor attempts at disrupting the player and generating click-bait headlines.
It's not negative. People are complaining about his overindulgence with it.

Ruud Gullit is a proper racist isn't he?

Players that have underachieved but live a lavish lifestyle are not viewed in a positive light. Most would view them better if they were humble. Find a minority player that stays out of the lime light, always tries to improve, lives a modest lifestyle and you will find a player that people view in a positive light (which is the overwhelming majority of minority players).

Eric Bailly is a perfect example of this. He seems down to earth from his public persona, sure he might live in a mansion and own a supercar but he doesn't shove it in everyone's face. Valencia is another perfect example, Martial and Rashford are also good examples.

I have no issue with what Pogba does on social media, but there are many reasons other than race for disliking someone with a big presence on social media. Pogba seems to be always doing promotional work, more than any other player I've seen, so it's reasonable to expect that to impact his focus on the pitch. I don't have an issue with it because the on pitch performance is what is important, but some people do.

People complain that he is dancing with his brother on instagram.
That's too far.
Memphis another prime example.
Memphis thought he was a superstar. I'm not being funny but when you indulge yourself and your "brand" so much, you better be bloody damn good at what you do. Its the exact same in the fight game. You project the image of superstardom and zero humility. I get that you can do what you want with your money and wear whatever style you want; granted, you will bring a lot of attention and people will scrutinise you more.

Asked what Pogba’s poor form was down to, Mourinho replied: “Ask him. Ask him when you get a chance what he thinks about it.”
When Mourinho was asked what he could do to help Pogba realise his potential said: “I work. It’s the only thing I can do. I cannot do anything else.”

Mourinho was also insistent Pogba’s absence with a torn hamstring for over two months to mid-November has had no bearing on the player’s troubles since the turn of the year.
“His option, with the medical opinions [at United], was not to go to the surgery table and his recovery was really, really good and I think he is more than fine in relation to his recovery from the injury, which is an area sometimes where you have a recurrence,” Mourinho said. “In his case - not at all. It [his form] is nothing to do with his injury. His recovery was good.”

This is the manager of Manchester United....sounds like a 5 year old kid. Jose you're the manager. Stop throwing players under the bus.

Doesn't sound good at all for the relationship between Jose and Pogba

This is silly, social media isn't his job it also represents his life (out side of football), laughing and joking is allowed outside of your working hours!

TBH I am really getting annoyed with the way things are going in football. Players have lives, its not like he is at night clubs, getting drunk, smoking, or stealing taxis.

Most of the time he is with his family, having fun, looking after his mum, and enjoying life with his teammates and brothers.

Lets criticise him for his performances on the pitch and also if he isn't putting in the effort in training or is not keeping fit.
I notice during the summer when he was putting in the training which was on instagram also no one had anything to say

EDIT: Also it just goes to show, we complain about there not being characters anymore in football, but as soon as someone shows some individualism, we complain.
Fantastic post. Thank God there are some with good sensibility. Robson is way out of line

Jose Mourinho's arrogance knows no bounds. What has he got to say about Sanchez's form? Or perhaps Luke Shaw? When a lot of players aren't performing at their best and the team is suffering because of that the manager has to take some responsibility as well. He is responsible for the performances on the pitch and it isn't a coincidence that a lot of our key players are all off form at the same time.

Can I ask what people wanted Jose to say? Do they want him to take blame for Pogba’s form?

Not sure, they're both to blame as much as each other IMO. Mourinho for not getting the best out of him, Pogba for not looking interested half the time.

Your kidding if you think that's the only way he could have handled that question.
Personally, don't give a shit. The season can't end soon enough.

Yes, it probably is partly both of them. Do we say the same for Pogba’s early form? He had no problems then in a midfield 2.

All players go through periods of poor form...in Pogba's case he's come back from a long term injury. He played well for France and hopefully that will give him a boost for the rest of the season

What's up with him saying that ?

Ok, and when they asked Jose what he can do to fufill Pogba’s potential, what did he say? Work. We cannot expect Pogba not to take responsibility as well.

Yeah definitely, Mourinho is motivating him correctly and Pogba's attitude is good when he's playing well, so if he's not playing well then the blame falls on both of them; Mourinho for poor motivation/organisation, Pogba for poor attitude/all round sulking.

A better question might be to ask him what he is actually doing, rather than what he can do. You could lump some other players in there too. Mainly attacking or creative players.

I'd rather they ask Jose what our attacking game plan is. I don't see any.

He is probably doing things similar to what he was doing earlier on in the season when Pogba was playing well. Like Jose said, all he can do is work. Same goes for Paul.

They should ask Mourinho why Lingard is playing so well this season as well.

Perhaps he could launch some over the top defence of the player? Which would be consistent with his displays of affection for the likes of Fellaini.

Mourinho often digs himself a hole because his public treatment of players isn't consistent.

I never said Ruud Gullit was racist. I indicated (not for the first time) that some criticisms of Pogba's attitude and lifestyle are construed through a prism of subliminal racism. Ditto Depay and others. It's endemic in sport, in my opinion. Black sportspeople are too often defined through a lens of attitude and gangsta.

Fellaini gets treated badly by the fans though. Fellaini and Pogba come across as very different characters as well. He defended Lukaku when the fans were on his back too.

Equating Pogba's poor form to his social media presence is completely unfair, but equating it to a poor attitude is not. Mourinho's task with Pogba was to turn him from an extremely talented kid to the leader of the side. Ability wise, Pogba could be a talisman in any team but he doesn't seem to have the mentality or maturity to do it.

Last season, he played a disciplined role in midfield a number of times, including the Europa League final. This season (especially since Sanchez's arrival) he has decided that he doesn't want to do that any more and he's too good a player to have to do any defensive work. Ironically, that attitude makes him half the player he could be.

The Spurs game was the point for me when I lost faith in him. It was a huge game and he phoned it in because he was having a sulk. Maybe he doesn't rate Jose as a manager and feels poorly utilised. That is no excuse for that type of effort in such a big game. Roy Keane despised Mick McCarthy yet played some of his greatest ever games for Ireland under McCarthy because he desperately wanted to win.

He was nailed on to be club captain next season. Now, he'll be lucky to ever wear the armband again. Unless he finds the motivation and winning mentality he will go down as a massive wasted talent.

And McTominay. Ashley Young too. Those three inparticular are the teachers pets. They seem to get a free pass regardless of the performances. On the other side you've got Shaw, Pogba and Martial who have to work twice as hard to gain the managers trust and one bad game means they're out of the team. It's not consistent IMO but I guess that's the type of personality the manager prefers to work with or finds easier to work with. Flair players are more restricted under his management but workhorses are given free passes even if they have several poor games because they're 'trying'.

He has done for Pogba - multiple times. Including having a massive go at Scholes. Prior to the Spurs game, I think you'll struggle to find a quote from Jose that is even slightly critical of Pogba.

When the players back him and follow his instructions, he defends them. When they "know better" he goes the other way.

Do Pogba, Martial and Shaw give 110% and fully make use of their talents? Same can be asked of Mkhi. McTominay and Young on the otherhand do. Can throw Lukaku in there as well.

He is harsh on players like Martial and Pogba because they are talented and need to give more. He doesn’t say anything about players like Darmian because they simply dont have the required talent.

Interestingly, we signed Sanchez only days before that game. There strikes me something a little strange (or cowardly?) about that.

Ultimately, there are better ways to deal with this poor form, in my opinion. Given the current narrative you'd think that Pogba being by far our best player (when fit) until January never even happened.

I love Robbo but what was he doing when he wasn't doing his Job. Getting drunk allegedly with Norman and Paul Mc?
When Robson wasnt doing his job, he was healing from all the injuries he was on the receiving end of for doing his job. His commitment was never in question. If he was a pisshead and didnt back it up on the field, he'd have been out the door like McGrath and Whiteside.

I'm not saying I agree with it. Just that it's pretty obvious why he no longer defends Pogba when he has done it with other players. I really don't like the public challenging of his players but clearly it's his MO when he feels players aren't giving their best.

The change being around the same time as the Sanchez signing is extremely worrying as it seems Pogba's ego couldn't handle the big money super star signing and his attitude has been affected. For a future leader of the side that is a major concern.

Agreed. Whether or not people agree with how Jose is dealing with the issue, whether they feel he is only saving his own ego or they think he's trying to get a reaction out of Pogba, Pogba's performances are on Pogba himself. Keane is maybe the extreme example of a winner type mentality, but Pogba is far off the bare minimum lately, in terms of effort. That's squarely on himself. And it's unacceptable.

I really do hope he starts tomorrow and we see a positive reaction and a determined Pogba.

Yeah, and I remember when we played Barca pre season he said Pogba was the only united player who was at their level. Its a 2 way street with jose, if he backs you to the hilt, you in turn run through brick walls for him. Pogba hasn't, so maybe Jose deems him not worth it afterall
