Positional sense, handling the pressure of playing for a big club, how to look after yourself, mental toughness...you talk like Valencia's just some nobody who'll be easily replaced. He's held down a position for the world's biggest club, under some of the best mangers in the modern era for almost a decade and deserves better than frivolous, witless put-downs.
100% agree

Man Utd sign established player between the ages of 27 and 30

Caf: Feck sake, why are we signing 50 year olds and not building for the future instead!

Man Utd sign talented youngster

Caf: Feck sake, what a joke, kid has barely played any games and I've never seen him paly so what can he possibly do for us
The split between the people who want young players and who want established 29 year olds is fairly even. So ofcourse you will have people complaining when we sign players from either camp but the complaints won't be from the same people.
The only way all the caf will be happy is if we sign .......... Messi.... but then Cal.......Neymar.....off field antics.... I give up, no signing will make Caf unanimously happy.

Interesting profile! Hope he brings more to the table than the previous defensive reinforcement we brought in from Portugal.

My point is how can we be sure he's good enough to solve our problems at right back. I'm not saying he wont be great, God knows I hope he's outstanding, but how can our scouts tell he's exactly what we need after him making so few senior appearances
Ronaldo only made 25 appearances for Sporting (majority as a sub) before joining United. Generally, when a player has been this highly rated by so many in the game and so many big teams are watching them, they're quite good.

It's nearly two years old now, but a good scouting report on DD

https://footballtalentscout.net/2016/09/04/diogo-dalot/

– known for his composure in possession, pace, first touch, technique, balance, close control, and dribbling ability
It's probably not worth reading too much into the scouting report of a 17 year old. I'd put a lot more faith into someone who's watched a single game of his at senior level.

I have no expectations from this guy, and that's a good thing (for me). Clearly being bought in as a backup to Valencia for now, but if he picks on, that's the RB position sorted for a good while.

Makes sense that we buy a backup here, since we will probably be buying a new LB and a CB. Wouldn't want the backline changing completely.

Just curious... Why sign him, when we could play Fosu-Mensah?

Local reports say that one of the Glazer's (Joel) is in Porto. United could be trying to close the deal above the clause's 20M to avoid heavier tax but more players can be involved.

Why would Joel Glazer be there? Seems weird.

I like that he's seemingly not afraid to have a run at his opposition full-back, which is quite important for us due to the way we play. Anyone who has watched United more than a dozen times last season can see that we play predominately on the left side of the field and when that gets crowded we switch it over to Valencia on the right who is often isolated against his opposition full-back; Valencia, as we know, doesn't venture to take any risk one-on-one, however, if Dalot has it in his skill-set to do that then it's only going to make us all the more penetrating on the right.

Why does it take so long for us to sign someone?
Usually we're linked with players for months before it happens, other clubs just go straight in, give the money, get the signature, done.

I think Fosu Mensah is more suited to being a centre-half than a right-back.
I agree, that or DM.
Agree with you guys, no idea why so many people thinks he'll be our future RB. Sure, he can play there as backup, but he'll be a CB or DM in the future, either at United or somewhere else.

Ooh, I'll take Telles, no idea who this Danilo is though.
As someone who watches the league, how good is Telles?
Think Sandro is a better player but his fee might be too high now. Telles is more hard working and has a good cross, just not as good technically and in terms of composure.

In my very humble opinion, I believe that the movements and runs of any particular full-back are majority-wise the domain of the coaching staff and the individual assuming only the responsibility to carry out those instructions. For eg.

A full-back can provide attacking support in two ways :-

1. The winger remains wide and pulls the full-back wide with him; in that circumstance the full-back overlaps on the inside of the defender. This is quite common with City where Sane hugs the touchline and even someone like Delph, not a natural full-back, overlaps inside the full back to pull it back across goal.

2. The winger drops inside, pulling the full-back more central; in that circumstance the full-back overlaps on the outside of the defender, usually delivering a cross uncontested.

Both of the above are a direct result of attacking coaching and very specific tactical instructions. If the above doesn't happen, it's usually because of instructions for it not to happen for whatever reason it may be. No matter who we purchase, the main issue is tactical instruction. Even an ordinary individual can carry out the above instructions. It does not require world class talent to do so. Purchasing a better full-back won't automatically make this happen.
I'm a Valencia fan for his hard work and good battling qualities but he is a terrible crosser, it's not a case of him not getting far forward or overlapping, hence it's not a tactical instruction from Mourinho. Look at the FA Cup final, he was in advanced position loads of times but lacked the ability to get a good cross in, can't blame tactical instruction for that.

The 3rd choice RB at Palace ? TFM is obviously not good enough.
TFM played 24 games with Palace, while Dalot just 8 with Porto

If we are signing a young player to cover Valencia, Dalot doesn't even play in Porto first team.

Young and TFM could have been enough to cover Valencia. IMO signing an experienced RB (23-27) would be better to replace Valencia.

Multi million pound transactions take a lot of time. It happens with every club, not just us.

Telles got 4 goals and 14 assist from LB for Porto this year, must be decent no?
Pretty sure you’re numbers are wrong. That’s maybe through every competition which also included b team, youth league and so on where he played a few different positions from the looks of it including RM, LM,RB and LB

2 assists in the first team which isn’t bad since it was like 7 games.

Crucially in your analysis you’ve missed out the part about whether they’re actually good. 1 young defender plays a lot, another young defender plays a little, therefore one who plays a lot is better. That is not how you analyse football players abilities...

TFM is a guy who lost his place in a team battling for relegation. Dalot is a guy who was storming it in the second division of Portugal and was set to be a first team starter for a Champions League team next season

TFM was considered as having a great season at RB until they found that guy who played against us when he couldn’t and that kid was fantastic. TFM has also been good for us when he has played RB even assisting a couple of goals. Let’s not down play his abilities.

He's talking about Telles not Dalot
