If we sack Jose in this international break and bring in a new manager or appoint someone already at the club then I will still be confident that we can and will finish above Spurs and Arsenal.

Can we expand it for top 7? Pretty clear we are fighting for 6/7 this season. 5 would be extraordinary and 4-1 would be Leicester winning the league odds
lol i didn't realise us making up a 5 point gap with 30 games to go was such insane odds!...

In next 9 matchdays, there is one head to head between the so called Big 6. So expect twists each week.

Utd have 4, while Chelsea, City, Spurs, Arsenal have 3 and Lfc have 2. So Utd needs to improve big time whereas a good chance for LFC to build some momentum provided they can beat the lesser sides.

Unfortunately 3 of United's are away.

Spurs are up there despite playing majority of games away from home, experiencing a host of injuries to key players and basically playing like absolute turd.

Ok we haven't been THAT bad, but we have been way off our best.

Now, it either means that results haven't been mirroring performances, and we've been lucky, which means that we will soon start to drop more points to reflect our average performances.

Or, Spurs picking up points and keeping up with teams like , Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea who are clearly clicking at the moment and on form, is actually quite reassuring. Spurs normally hit their straps around November time, and with key players back fit by then, and a new stadium to call home, Spurs could hit form and start picking up even more points.

Who knows. One thing I will say is based on recent performances, I am not confident of top 4, or of beating West Ham away and Man City home in our next 2.

Good teams get lucky. Spurs are a good team so you're getting a fair amount of luck. Luck may well run out but it's more likely Spurs will find form imo

Thus, a big opportunity. If Utd plays well in these big games which is effectively a 6 pointers so could very well be at the top in December.

United are done and it’s only October. Hopefully Arsenal will beat Spurs to 4th. Like I said in the match day thread tonight, I didn’t mind Spurs until I joined here.

But yeah, no way United get it and it’s a blessing in disguise because stumbling to 4th would only paper over cracks.

We need huge changes at United and it starts with the manager.

Right that this thread is in the football forum.
We aren't involved in it. The too five don't seem to be in generous mood. Racking up points against fodder at will.

Failing to beat Brighton, Wolves and West Ham put us in this position. It's gonna take a meltdown from the current top 4 or an amazing streak of wins from us to get it now.

Also, dropping points v Chelsea in the final seconds because we’re sat too deep despite scaring the hell out of them when we were actually attacking them, and getting battered at home by a bang average Spurs side that doesn’t usually score many goals yet we gift them three.

We struggled against Leicester first game too.

We’re simply not good enough on and off the pitch and our league table standing is evidence of this.

7 points of 4th & 3rd and the race is over? The only teams that have looked to be above the rest is Pool and City. Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs will all drop points. Title race is over as I don't see City dropping that many points, but top 4 is still wide open, let's see what the table looks like come January.

Has there been a more competitive start to a season? I agree city are the favourites but cant remember the last time it was this close between so many teams who have all had good starts to the season.

9 games in and just 2 points separate the top 5, with 3 of them unbeaten.

All of the top 5 as it stands are in the title race but only two will fight it out - City and Liverpool. Because they are further forward in their progression. Chelsea and Arsenal have new managers and still need to adapt. And Spurs will pay for not signing any players. They aren't as strong as before.

We'll need to go on an unbeaten run for some months to stand a chance of breaking into top 4. Losing 3 games at this point is too much and it's the reason we're so away from everyone else.

Our next run of fixtures up till 1/1 :

Everton H
Bournemouth A
City A
Palace H
South A
Arsenal H
Fulham H
Liverpool A
Cardiff A
Bournemouth H

3 big matches but the rest of the fixtures aren't that hard. If we want to push up at the top, at least 24-27 points needed from these fixtures. Otherwise we'll be fecked.

Players and Mourinho need to absolutely step up. No more crap points can be dropped.

Of course we are in it. I get the feeling some people have never seen a full season of football in their lives...

Start by reading the fixture list for all sides over the next 4 matches. Pay particular attention to our rivals fixtures. Note how they face each other? Points will be dropped by many over the coming weeks.

I find threads like this hugely depressing. In this decade (ie since 2010) only once has a non Big 6 team finished top 4, and that was Leicester. The competitiveness of the league has all but gone, and the Big 6 are there, and the rest are just making up numbers. It has become hugely boring, to such an extent that I find it a chore to go to games these days and I will be most likely giving up my season tickets and the end of the season and doing something else on my weekends. Although if we get relegated, I suspect that I would go more often. But it's a glorified SPL, with the same teams, year in, year out fighting over the CL spots, where year in, year out, they meet the same foreign teams.

Me, I'd like the whole money bubble to burst and rewind 40 years. But that's somewhat fanciful. Maybe its time to find my local FC United.

2016/17? 5 points between 1st and 6th after 10 games, 1 point between 1st and 4th

7 points off 5th too. The problem for United is not necessarily the 7 point gap by itself … it's also that you have to rely on two of the current top 5 dropping points whilst you close on both without dropping points yourself.

Do you think the Saints will get relegate? Tbh I think you'll be ok but Hughes isn't the right man for the job. You need to find a coach that will do what poch did for you. ❤

You all play each other over the next few weeks... So drop points you shall.

Spurs will start this trend next week, when they face City, no doubt, though a draw would be nice.

How can Spurs not be as strong as before when we've kept all our best players and - unlike last season - now have Lucas Moura for the whole season?

That might be a huge concern with ten games left. Not with 29 to play.

Well yes, but then United also have to face the same tough fixtures at some point themselves.

you're not as strong as you were in 15/16 and 16/17. That's what I meant.

City win would be better. Every point counts and we're not finishing ahead of city this season.
Probably not, no, but should they draw, and then we manage to repeat our win at the Etihad last season, then the 9 point gap between us could well be 5 in n just 3 games times.

That's probably the most concerning part. Similar to the year we missed out with LVG, it was due to our inability to win the games we should have won.

Yea but our priority is catching Spurs, that one point could be massive. City are in a different league to us at the moment.
Our priority is picking up points, right now we are chasing the pack, and that includes Spurs but also City. The top 5 are quite closely bunched, so catching one, means catching them all. I don't expect us to challenge for the title of course, but I expect to see the players push as if they are.
