He reminds me of Azpilicueta, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing Azpi has been really good and defensively solid but I think that is more what he will be. Doesn’t look to me to be the marauding full blooded RB we had hoped for who was going to take people on, fly past them and whip in balls for our strikers.
Think he’ll probably fall more in to the Azpi, Darmian style of fullback than say a Dani Alves. He really just doesn’t look that athletic at all. He can clearly spot a pass and has a willingness to try them but he gave away a lot of possession today with some really poor passing choices. It’s still very early days and hopefully he kicks on.
Name fullbacks that actually take players on? I can think of two and they both play at RM. Very, very few fullbacks dribble past or take on players in a flat out foot race (well, Walker). Overlaps, sure, but that's different. Evra did this as did Valencia when first converted, but this is not the norm.

I don’t see the hype in this kid to be honest. I expect a potential top class full back to be maurading up and down the flanks like a crazy man and providing another effective avenue to attack or be solid in the defense. I don’t see any hint of that from Dalot unless he evolves a lot over the next few season.

Our fullbacks is a week point and I would not mind seeing him loaned out and we get someone like Hakimi or attal on the right for next season with Chillwell or tierney on the left.

He is young and will get better.

No he got caught in most U23 games as well. I can only think of a single full back ever to have played as first choice for a top club that was as weak in the tackle and as poor positionally as Varela. One Djimi Traoré.
He wasn't caught out in most u23s games and he most certainly isn't weak in the tackle. I don't know what games you were watching.

Ole has changed the way how fullback should attack and fullback is slowly adapting to his tactical. Young didn't make a lot of crosses but is making more square passes and cutback, I think Dalot would be excellent going forward on the right flank, especially with his pace and dribble, he'll be beast, he created that goal by beating a man with his pace that open space for Rashford to exploit space.

Dalot haven't had a lot of games in senior but learning his trade in LB, he'll be always inconsistent. When he develops his games and fully adapted to the pace and physically of the premier league, he'll be a world beater, he has talents to be the best fullback.

This just don't justify Dalot's game at all. I don't know how you see Dalot defensively, not sure how you can come out with Azpi as comparison. Not all full backs who is better going forward than defending can take on their man constantly (Trippier is one of them).

In fact, his biggest strength right now is his movement when overlapping as a full back. On the other hand his defensive work is weaker than his offensive work. If he will ever be like Azpi like what you said, then he needs to trains his defensive aspect twice harder than he needs to train his dribble, passing skills or even crossing.

You don't seem to be very good in identify player's strength sir.

He was decent, but I do remember him having a great game attacking Arsenal in that 3-2 win in 2016

That was definitely a huge highlight of his career, think that was Rashford's prem debut where he crossed a few good chances.

Then there was that game Coutinho destroyed him for a great goal, which probably ended his career for us.

I’m not surprised really but my comparison is due to both being good passers (normally) and that neither really seem all that athletic and more rely on good movement or just not being that much of a maurader. I didn’t mention anything about him being currently a great defender. That’s just something you added in. In the future I see him being someone similar in a playing style akin to Azpi. It was pretty simple but I know you struggle with these sort of things.

Badly position for the Brighton goal but Jones should have done better there. Probably needs more time to adjust to Premie League.

I never exactly point out of you ever calling him being a great defender. And you never even mentioned about both being good passer (normally). Passing skills in full back standard is something can be improved. And what makes Azpi good in his defending is because he relies on his good positioning not his movement (once again you aren’t very good to identify player’s strength).

So, let’s go back to what you said.

He reminds me of Azpilicueta, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing Azpi has been really good and defensively solid but I think that is more what he will be. You are clearly said that he reminds you of Azpi who is solid defensively because that’s what you think he will be. Mainly because you didn’t think of him to be a type of full back who was going take people on or whipping the ball.

So the argument is started there, Dalot has shown that his movement of going forward is his strength, and I do think his crossing and dribble aren’t even that good either but defensively he’s worse at the moment. There are more aspects in his defending that he needs to improve than in his offensive. Now you get my point? In his current situation and ability what he has shown, it’s harder for him to be like azpi than trippier.

Hopefully he gets a decent run at some point but right now he looks worlds apart from TAA and there’s only six months between them in age.

I think what really needs to happen is you need to learn to read. No where did I say he reminds me of Azpi due to his defensive qualities that’s just something you’ve made up or interpreted from poor reading comprehension. Anyone who has watched Azpi knows he is a great passer, I didn’t expect to have to defend a simple comment of him reminding me of Azpi therefore I didn’t really feel the need to elaborate on it.

Another reason I would say he reminds me of Azpi is the versatility to play either side and the fact that he doesn’t really look that athletic. What has happened here is that you have a problem with me and are looking for things that aren’t even there and just making yourself look a little silly.

So instead of just making stuff up try and read and think about what a person is saying. This is the last time I want to have any sort of exchange with you because you wrote a load of rubbish that I didn’t even say.

Making stuffs? Let's not use that lame excuse. I already told you, you never mention about both Azpi & Dalot about being a good passer in your original post so how do people expect to read your mind that is the reason of you comparing him to Azpi. All I see in your quote is that you think he reminds you of Azpi because you don't think he's a type of player who is going to take people on, fly past them and whip in balls for our strikers. And you even mentioned that even though he can spot pass he also tends to lose possession which clearly different to Azpi's style.

I think you need to learn how to identify player's strength before started comparing players. Azpi's biggest strength is his defending & him being good in positioning able him to play in centre back as well, clearly different to Dalot right now. A player who is good with their passing, not a good dribbler that can past players and got good movement going forward just like what you described of Dalot is more of Trippier's strength than Azpi.

Doesn't really look athletic and can play either side doesn't make him similar to the player. Phil neville can play either side too. In fact Dalot is more athletic than what you think, the guy is 183 cm, Azpi is only 178cm.

How old is Azpi? How old is Dalot? The rest has already been answered in the post above so use some common sense. You’ve also not seen much of Trippier have you?

And you did make stuff up because you were saying I said something when I didn’t and it’s the whole reason you have started this conversation.

Anyway I’m putting you on ignore as it’s clear you’re on a wum so don’t waste your time.

He lost his marker for the goal, but he did assisted Rashford, so that's balance it out.

Other than that, he was impressive. Still raw but damn good. He doesn't hide nor playing oversafe with his passes and ball-carry. Instead it's more attacking.

Performed as best as he can when we need him, as Shaw is out for some reason, Ole could have chose Darmian instead. Well done.

Why is the youngster being played at lb when Young can also play there? Would thought you would want to give your young defender an easier job. Hope he is played on the right from now on, since even though he had an alright game he was a lot better than Young who wasted a lot of good opportunities and his positioning was all over the place.

Hasn’t Dalot has played most of his senior games (not many) at LB?

With Shaw pulling out so late, perhaps it’s better to disrupt the team in only one position, by playing Dalot at LB, than in two positions by playing Young at LB, and Dalot at RB?

Kid did fine. Obviously needs to improve defensively but did well on short notice.

Definately a player there.

Would be happy for him to get a run in the side.

One of his better games of late. I still would have loved us to have kept Varela though, he showed much greater potential here for me. That said, he was a bit older, but his ability to run with the ball/dribble and his crossing were both first class.
Very weird post. His career has nosedived to obscurity. This wasn’t some gem we let slip through the net.

I’m not placing any relevance as to what has happened since he left. I liked what I saw when he was here and he should have been kept I believe. He even looked good in midfield in Jose’s first pre-season, but I did always suspect he wouldn’t have the profile of a Jose right back.

Personally, I think he looks outstanding.

Quick (but not rapid). Tall and strong. Picks out a pass. Can whip in brilliant crosses. Good anticipation.

People forget, but if you are interested enough, look back through his thread:

https://www.redcafe.net/threads/guillermo-varela-2015-16-performances.412101/

You will see he drew a lot of praise, particularly in the Mitjelland and Arsenal games. He was certainly shaky in defence, just as Dalot is now, but in his own first season, he showed far more proficiency going forward. Created a few of Rashford’s first few goals for us with great crossing too.

https://www.redcafe.net/threads/guillermo-varela-2016-17-performances.419674/

You can also see the praise he got for his midfield performances here.

Anyway, ship has long sailed, but I remain a bit annoyed that Jose let him go too hastily. Was the wrong manager for him, and he was just one of the few young players who couldn’t build on the promise they showed under Van Gaal once Jose came in.

He'll make mistakes no doubt but how's he going to improve without getting games....certainly not playing U23.

I thought he did quite well, and would like to see him getting a run in the side before the season is over.

Put him RB and give him continuous games, maybe not v PSG but it’s only going to improve him. It’s not as if Young does anything of note there anyway.

He is 19 years old. 19!! the fact that he starts games for us in his first season for us coming from portugal is amazing. I think he will be terific for us and we should remember how little experience he has

Because defensive beast and being weak in the tackle are the only two options? You're talking shit and have resorted to hyperbole.

Ok so logically speaking a guy who is as good going forward (for a full back) as Varela was, and is also a decent defender, can't get a game for FC Copenhagen.

Needs more time. Unsurprisingly he looks a young RB who is finding his feet in a top league.

Against neymar?! Not sure about that.

18 months. But TAA is another level to be compared. Not just Dalot. :)

It’s actually 5 months. One was born October 98 the other March 99
True, 162 days difference. Got it wrong.Again. :D

Nevertheless only solution is work, train, play and learn. If he reaches a Cancelo level or something slightly better will be ok. TAA is just on a absurd level of development.
