He was shocking at the beginning. He and Bailly had no idea how to play together but he settled down as the game went on.

The irony of coming in laughing off the tag of a great servant for a player who’s been here nearly a decade and has captained us, while citing Dwight Yorke is pretty funny. Yorke - a player I loved- had a legendary season here and is rightfully remember fondly, but he played less than 150 games here and his final season and a half before he was unceremoniously shown the door he was a shadow of the treble player, occasionally showing his brilliance while going head to head with fergie due to a very unprofessional lifestyle and supposed half arse approach. But this qualifies as great servant over 250 games almost, never failed to give everything, always put the team first and played a hand in many trophies. I don’t mean to be disrespectful but given that you were 5 when Yorke signed for united might account for your very incorrect statement.

Also to compare players who are debated in a great servant category to the likes of Giggs and Scholes is frankly stupid. Next up, ‘was van nistelrooy decent in the box?,’

I’ve had a quick look through your posts and slamming our players seem to be something of a hobby of yours, even solskjaer isn’t immune from your all knowing wisdom. Given your estimation of so much of our team we should be staring mid table in the face. You’re very aggressive in stating your opinion as fact.

He’s obviously being chosen as captain because several top managers know less than you, including O’Neill at villa who made him captain , one of the youngest ever in the League. In recent years his professionalism and performances returned him to the international set up and a starting spot in the World Cup, incredibly given how ‘garbage’ he is. Regular praise from a range of pundits in recent years must also be evidence of the worlds idiocy.

Pretty much every bit of evidence contradicts your opinion, but I guess green smileys compensate for that.
As i said.He has not been a fantastic servant.
He is a player that has over stayed his welcome and should have been binned years ago.

Hes been here 8 years and has not once had a great season.Hes had more garbage ones than decent. He should not be seen as a fantastic servant and praised for overstaying his welcome due to the ineptness of our board.

And you say top managers rate him.
Last time i checked Oneil,Southgate and a passed it Van Gaal are not top managers.
So theres no evidence that contradicts my opinions.

And lets be real English pundits praise their own its what they do. Especially England internationals.
They hardly ever criticize their own. Even when Rooney was stinking up the pitch we had Gary raving about his "silent domination".
If its true what you say and they are regularly praising him I would take that with a pinch of salt and call bullshit on their biased pro England commentary.

Im not even a Young hater.I wish him all the best in his career and in life in general but he is not nor has he ever been Manchester United quality.

I apologise if i offended you. Truth be told the smiley wasnt really a disrespect towards you. Just the opinion of Young being a great servant

You're confusing legends with great servants here. Please.

What made me confused about your statement is that regardless of how many 100% performances Ashley put in 8 seasons, he isn't a great servant.

What is your standard? High stats?

The guy put so many great performances over the years with us and all the managers acknowledged him as a top guy/professional. His teammates included.

And here you are writing in forum discrediting him as a great servant for Manchester United.

Well I hate to break it for you, he is a great servant for us and we are grateful to have him as a leader in the dressing room. That's a fact, and your opinion is rightfully wrong and I can assure you that you can be the only guy with that kind of opinion and only 5% of other spoiled brats can agree with you.
We are greatful to have Ashley young? Jesus wept.Ihave heard it all. Could you imagine Barcelona saying they are greatful to have Ashey young.
If you cant see the correlation between players like Young in our starting 11 and us finishing 5th and 6th and winning less since Fergie retired than Chelsea,City and even Arsenal then i cant help you.
For all of this talk of him being such a great servant he hasnt won much at all.
A worthless cup,A second rate Europa league an Fa cup and a Premier League.
What next Phil Jones a great servant?

Overstaying your welcome because of inept owners is not being a great servant.
Judging how much hes been slated in this thread i doubt im one of 5 percent.

He actually looks like a decent defender at times, but for some reason seem to have forgotten how to attack and play football. It was the same with Valencia which is suprising seeing as they were initially wingers.

Did you guys hear Ole's comments about him after the game? Clearly rates him very high, even if most guys in here don't.

You’ve just reiterated everything you’ve already said and I felt has been massively contradicted. Every point you make is conditional ‘it’s because this, it’s because that.’ You clearly have strong feelings towards young, bordering on obsessive, but while I disagree massively with you, you should at least have the grace to acknowledge that while you might not agree with me, it’s simply is laughable or ridiculous to suggest that given his career young has been a great servant for the club. You’re just being extremist for no reason other than to serve your opinion, which is typical of online fans.

just put @Sauldogba on mute. One of the worst posters on the CAF IMO.

Anyway, him playing RW with Bailly behind I guess was meant to make us more solid, but they just couldn't decide who was marking Bernat/Di Maria and the shape was all over the place.

Once Young went back to RB it was much, much better. He was organising Dalot and talking plenty which helps. He might not be a raiding RB anymore flying up and down, but he makes us defensively solid which is important.

He made some fantastic back post interceptions similar to the one Bailly switched off on. I'd say that's young's strength he is always switched on.

I haven’t read any of the messages in here but I imagine he’ll be getting slated as usual. I thought he was great last night.

His legs have obviously gone, but he’s such a smart player.

Yep. I mean, he played at RCB for a good 20 minutes last night and was pretty flawless there... really great from him.

He had a good game once Bailly went off. He seemed angry about what Bailly was doing. Im sure I saw him go over to Ole and have a word with him before the sub too. Maybe im making that up

i like how he was mentioning top managers that rate him but omitted Ferguson and Mourinho.

You could see him organising and pointing to Bailly where he should be positionally.

Very impressed with his display last night considering he played in about 4 different positions pretty fluidity and never put a foot wrong really.

I think he’s a good, underestimated player in the team right now. His experience is very good for us and I see him as a really good calming influence. Good choice for the captaincy right now too IMO.

Ashley Young is far from a calming influence. Let’s not change the narrative here because he had a decent game.

We need to move on from him if we really want to challenge for titles.

Look at the difference Dalot makes when he’s in the side, that’s what we need from our rb and I’d rather give Dalot all the game time to learn and develop his game than have an old average converted winger starting every match.

There’s a reason Ole picks him in the team and as the captain. His experience is very beneficial to the team.

If Ashley Young is so good, why is RB a position that so many have at or near the top of their list of positions that need to be upgraded in this summers transfer window. Young is at an age when players lose pace in their runs and quickness in their turns. It happens to all athletes who depend on speed and quickness. No amount of experience can overcome the effects of age, especially with wingers and those who defend the wings.

Genuinely couldn’t understand what the feck he was doing when playing at right wing. He spent more time in central midfield. It must have been tactical?

When he went to right back he was fine, to be fair to him. Which is bizarre given he played as a winger for the vast majority of his career.

Under a tree.
I thought he played well yesterday, but I genuinely believe people have a agenda toward him from when he was signed, just like Valencia, as neither were ever accepted as proper Ronaldo "replacements"

Would be interesting to see how good he could have been at Right back if he play his whole career there. People forget he's only played a few years at full back and has spend the majority at left back.

He was beaten at least 5 times in first 10 minutes. Bailly was all over the place positionally, and Young was covering all the time for him, but he was hopeless in one on one situations. He is a senior player who plays like a total amateur at times.

Because he's very good, but we could upgrade to top class? Because he's 33 and obviously can't go on forever?

Just because you need to upgrade a position, doesn't mean the person playing that position isn't good.

I'm tired of hearing this "he gives his all" bollocks. This is Manchester United, giving your all should be the minimum requirement.

If giving your all is all that's needed, then let's bring Fellaini back and put him in the starting XI. I get why Ole doesn't drop him because it's partly because he was a starting captain at the time Ole came here and it would have been unwise to drop him because Ole needed him on his side and also because we're not blessed with many options on that side and I assume Ole feels Dalot can alternate between RW and RB which gives him Ole some game changing options.

But I reiterate again that as a club that aspires to win trophies, we need to reduce Ashley Young's role in the team and either buy another right back or make Dalot our starting right back and use Young as backup.

I can't see Young starting, let alone being captain at any of the big clubs who year in year out challenge for or win trophies both domestically and in the champions league. Let's be real guys.

Its hard to type a serious response when you see absolute rubbish being spouted.
I know people have opinions but bloody hell.

In what world has Ashley young been a great servant?
Andy Cole is a great servant.Dwight yorke is a great servant.Ryan giggs and Paul Scholes are great servants.

This guy has been here for nearly a decade and has not had one great season yet hes a great servant .
Hes been garbage for most of his time here.
I will just leave you with a quote that i wrote in the Valencia thread and the same applies to Young.

This.
Hes been here 10 years and has had two great seasons and thats it.
We moved him to rb because he wasnt good enough as a winger and we were too tight to buy a right back.
Hes the embodiment of our decline and should not be seen as a great servant just because our board were not ambitious enough to upgrade on him when they really should have.
I have a feeling that we moved him to LB first, under Van Gal, incorporated as a wing back, I believe he also did play as right back when Valencia was injured. I think people will have differing opinions on who is, or was a great servant to this club, I think he has been a great servant, albeit I've never been a fan, to me he always fell over too easily when being tackled to try and win free kicks/penalties, but he has always given his all to the team, and has shown some good qualities. I think he will be phased out during next season, as Dalot and one other FB (either a new signing, or Laird/Williams) will be introduced more.

I like him.

What I like most about him is he is always ready to play, in any position - whether out of the team for a while, or whatever, he just slots in and generally does a good job. Always seems very fit, even though he is the oldest player in the squad. Yes it is probably true that we need a higher class first choice full back but you have to give him credit, he was a converted winger who ended up back in his national team at full back, did well at the world cup, kept Shaw out of the team last year and put in some good performances even though he is not naturally a defender.

He cost us a goal against Palace, and was shaky as feck in both games against PSG. But he can pocket some of the best players in the league and looks to be a leader in the team. His shortcomings in playing out of pressure are well known. He also chips in with a few goals/assists a season. Not a world class player, but is a model professional, these types of players are important for building a squad.

Needs to be out the team from day 1 next season. Can be used extremely sparingly as a backup at best if we want to compete. His age is getting to him as well as the fact he just isn't a fullback at all.

Ferguson, Moyes, Giggs, Van Gaal, Mourinho and Solksjaer all had him in their starting 11s. He got back in the England side after years out the side, and played brilliantly in the World cup. He's well liked by he peers and is a barrier between the young lads and the senior players and the old staff who have known him from Fergie's tenure. A tremendous pro, who at the very least will run himself into the ground for the cause.

But he's not a good servant apparently.

No one said he isn't a good servant. He is the new Valencia imo. Once a very good player who people are still defending after they are past being good enough to start. He hasn't fallen off the cliff like Valencia yet but if he is our starting right back next season it will very likely happen. You can see the deterioration of his game. He is simply not a starter anymore and it is best we phase him to a backup role before he hits his breaking point.
