I think he had a really good game, but his one mistake was punished badly. He was very intense in his pressing and won the ball brilliantly at several occasions, and I think he is as good as Herrera defensively. With the ball the has an unpolished playing style, but I like his passing range. He rarely plays the ball to the closest player, and play far more offensive passes than Matic and Herrera. I can't see him being our future DM as his first touch can be unpredictable, but most of all because he isn't very good at positioning himself in good positions to receive the ball deep. However, he might be excellent as a partner to Pogba, with Matic or a new DM behind them. If it is true that Herrera is on the verge of signing for PSG we should put him in the freezer and let Fred get a proper chance to show his abilities until the end of the season. I think Fred has improved a lot in the last games he has played, and it would be interesting to see if he can continue improving.

Even if Herrera leaves, I can't see us signing two first-choice central midfielders this summer. If we are to buy only one player, I would rather get a new DM and play him behind Pogba and Fred, than buying a more attacking player to partner Pogba and playing Matic as DM.

Has to be the worst £50 million signing ever surely?

I feel sorry for him to be honest, if he doesn't make that mistake he was generally "ok". No worse than Pogba that's for sure

This is twice time De Gea played for Fred, they scored a two goal. De Gea should never pass to players by opponents player.
Could you please re type the above in English. Thanks.

What I would say is that Fred was in acres of room when De Gea passed him the ball. Fred completely miscontrolled the ball lost possession and Wolves scored.
Fred was and is bloody useless, another waste of money not only the initial transfer fee but what wages is he on?
Too much whatever it is, I’m not even sure he should qualify for fecking work permit as a footballer!

He was alright up to the mistake, then just collapsed. Wolves were on to him, closed him down, didn't give him any room and he really struggle. He's clearly not a DM, he's far too weak, his first touch is poor and doesn't seem to read the game.

As harsh as it might sound, I would sell him this summer while we can still get some money back for him. Even he comes good, he will be a squad player or a starting player who a lot of faults. Some moves just don't work out and this seems like one of them, you just need to cut your losses and move on.

I'm not sure yet, like you say one huge negative seems to be his reading of the game in critical positions. If he can sort that out though I think he could be quite promising based on what I saw yesterday.

Started off promising but after the mistake the doubt seem to make its way back into his mind again.
There is a player in Fred but,at this moment in time,he does seem to lack a stronger mentality if things dont go to plan.

Yeah, it reminds me of what we did with de Gea initially. The rotation with Lindegaard didn't help at all IMO during his first season. Similarly here I think he's lacking game rhythm and a bit of trust. Unfortunately we can't afford his mistakes currently. For a 50m player I think we also should expect a bit more. I hope Ole coaches him up and I hope you are right.
I think he's definitely playing like a player who feels like his next opportunity might not come, those saying he had a great game are really overdoing it, but he was also better than the mistake he made. He could do with some rhythm I agree but I also don't think he can play that DM role, his first touch is loose as I said before we bought him so he needs more room for error further up the pitch, basically in Ander's role as it seems he is off, but as I say I'd still buy 2 CM's in the summer, as while I'd ive Fred another season we aren't a charity and that midfield needs a couple of real quality additions if Ander goes as it already needed one.

I say give him another season. At least he got about the pitch and showed some effort. Scotty M was ridiculed on these boards before but is now showing his potential.

After his mistake he started to play too safe, too many sideways balls and no sign of the quick feet we saw in the PSG game. Looks a player who knows he is running out of chances and doesn't know whether to stick or twist.

Agree with those who say there is a player in there but struggling to show his real worth.

It's not just that though, his first touch isn't great and his passing is miss and hit. He wasn't brought to be a squad player, at £50m we should be getting a lot more out of him. I'm happy for him to get another season, but can you honestly say he will settle and iron out all the weaknesses in his game? I can't see it, I don't think the PL is the right league for him, which does happen.

Just to be clear, in recent times Matic AND Ander were sitting back as dual DMs.

We went into this game with Fred ALONE sitting as DM. Pogba and McTominay were in attacking midfield positions far up the pitch.

So its not fair to say that Fred shouldnt play DM. He just shouldnt play it alone. And Matic wasn't playing it alone either, he had lots of help from Ander so I dont get why Ole thought it was a good idea to send him out there and do the job on his own.

My first instinct was to say well McTominay was probably playing too far up the pitch because he's a young player and probably supposed to play Ander's role of both helping the DM and also able to get forward but maybe he got carried away with the attacking. He had 5 shots and 1 goal, he was our main attacker...

But no. Its no fault with McTominay as Ole said in post game that they believe McTominay's best position is higher up the pitch like that. So clearly it was intended for Fred to do all the grunt work in front of the defense, which again... Matic doesnt do. So was surely never going to work.

Thats on Ole.

His biggest issue yesterday was his first touch, he gets into good positions and generally hits decent passes with either foot (although the pace of the pass needs work) but he was constantly nervy when receiving the ball.. it would roll under his foot, he'd have to touch it twice to get it under control etc... I don't know if this is just nerves but until he doesn't sort that out, the rest of his game is going to be on a shaky footing.

For a £50m signing - slightly concerning that we should be worried about things like touch in a Brazillian.

On plus side, him and McTominay gave the team more legs in midfield than I have seen in a number of recent games. I would stick with them for the next game.

He should be given another season and I think he will.
With United potentially losing a couple of midfield options next summer (Herrera,Pogba) it'll be poor management to lose another, especially one who's still adapting to the English game.

He was looking brilliant up until the mistake, then after that there was maybe a 15-20 minute spell where you could tell his head had gone but he did start to pick up again. Start of the game he looked superb, winning the ball, taking the ball on the half turn and killing it and spraying passes left foot or right foot and finding people.

All of a sudden his touch then became sloppy, ball would go too far or get stuck under his feet. If we can get the player that was there for the first 20 mins or whatever then great. But he does seem to be quite inconsistent.

Yeah agree with that. I think he has looked good in his last 3 games though. I would use him a bit more advanced against Barcelona.

He looks like he doesn’t know what to do with the ball, and is also having issues with his first touch. I wonder if it has to do with low confidence? It has been a difficult season for him.

Problem with Fred is he plays well for periods but then has done a costly error in games against Arsenal and Wolves recently leading to goals. Many believe the Arsenal goal was a dive but I feel he doesn't need to make such challenges and just be smarter. He can be a bit of a risk. He nearly set up a goal for Wolves yesterday with one of his challenges in th3 box

That was what I pointed out in the matchday thread too. I don't see how it can improve though, unless its all due to nerves.

Of all the positions a CM is where you need the most assured first touch and then quickly release the ball. He is awful (relatively speaking for his expected level) at both. To add to that he is not going to get time on the ball in EPL. So I personally am done with him, and think his time with us is over too.

Compare his touch to Dalot's touch and you can see the level that's required and how far he is from it.

Its tough man, I was a Fred supporter, but if the position he thrives in is that specific, he may just not be that great of a player. Good players can play in many shapes and forms. Otherwise you are like a king in the chess board, you need to be protected by the other pieces all the time or you're worthless.

Yeah he has in patches looked good in the last few games but to me it does seem like patches. I honestly wouldn’t mind seeing him as the player in between the 2 split striker thing we’ve been doing recently. Think he’d do pretty well there. Much rather him than Lingard anyway.

Things could look different if he was played from the start of the season, drilled and adapted into this team like every other player coming to a new club, to simply play and not being alienated on the bench for first half of the season.

I think when he's played as part of 2 CMs/DMs together he's done better and thats what he played for his previous club. I took a look at the average positions he played in the champions league last season particularly the City games and they were just 2 general midfield positions. Neither were sitting right in front of the defense, but both were together in the middle playing further forward than our deepest midfielders. So his real position is in CM in a CM duo

The closest to that in our 3 man midfield is Ander's role which is defending and occasional attacking. Matic and Pogba's roles are more extreme defense and attack. Neither of which did he play at his last club

Yes that was clear, his best position is a midfield 2, but we have a player called Pogba which basically erradicates any chance of us ever playing 2 in midfield. If we sold Paul for some reason, he would be best alongisde Matic who plays like Stepanenko. And then with 4 attackers in front and 4 defenders behind.

I think of our midfield as a 2 tbh, with Matic and Ander sitting. Pogba essentially plays as a 10 on the left as part of the attack. Plenty of games Lingard has ended up further towards his own goal coming from the right into the middle than Pogba, so I can't see him as a real CM this season.

For me I would be playing Ander and Fred together and seeing if they can strike up a good partnership. Fred is a bit better at some of the things Ander doesn't always deliver every game like creative passing and together they'd work hard to win the ball back.

Not sure why people are dissing and criticising him. Perhaps it's the mistake he made but he knitted the midfield well together with Scott, and was passing the ball around the pitch finding his teammates. He certainly didn't hide and did a lot more than Pogba who should be taken off instead

Agreed, the game having gone the way it did, totally overshadows the fact three stand-ins did better than their starting counterparts.

Not a bad passer of the ball but lacks awareness and first touch to be a 6. Did ok apart from the error for the goal.

Where is the 'like' button for this post? This is exactly what happened, the team was broken in two groups of five players where Fred was supposed to carry the ball through 5 players of Wolves (the 2 strikers and the 3 cms) while getting no support from the other two midfielders. The distance from Fred, who had to pick the ball 3-5 meters away from Smalldini and Lindelof to Pogba or Scott was criminal at times.

He was at fault for the goal, yes. But he had an overall good game considering all the work he had to do while defending(the ground he had to cover, press, recover balls and also cover for full backs) and also had to carry the ball forward all by himself because his teammates wouldn't help him.

Even the best player in the world needs to be protected, why shouldn't our lone defensive midfielder? Of course that he needs to be protected, the first defender of our team is the striker, not the DM, that's the problem with some of the players, they think that because they play for Manchester United they don't need to work their socks off. When actually they need to work harder than the other teams in order to be at the level we aspire to be.
