If I had a penny for every time Park gets mentioned to defend Lingard, I’d be a rich man.
Lingard is absolutely nothing like Park, Park would play every week in this side and be our best winger.
Park was never starting 11 material because there were better players ahead of him but he had his uses tactically like Lingard does. They even have similar stats. Park scored 28 goals for United and Lingard has managed 29 in less appearances to date. In what world was Park a winger who could play every week and be our best winger in the time he played for United? You have to be fecking kidding me, revisionism at its worst!

He got 5 of those against Derby, Yeovil, Swansea & Burton.

But even if we’re generous there, is one alright season in 5 ok for a United squad player in your opinion?
I think he's absolutely fine as a squad player yes. He has a knack for scoring in cup finals and against big sides too.

He has been awful this season but as I said earlier, I believe when the team starts playing better we'll see a better Lingard again. He isn't a character to drag us from the gutter or start every week but no one in the world thinks he is.

Its not his fault he gets picked so much by every manager since LVG. He's not starting 11 material but he clearly has his uses and adapts well to tactics. Ji-Sung Park was similar in this sense
What uses? He is not even a squad player worthy of the shirt.

There was some sort of consistency with what Park used to do. Lingard doesn't even do what he is supposed to be good at.

Lingard has dropped his performance level over the last 4 months. His consistency, same as many others have not been good.

So can you tell me as a squad player what does he bring to the team ?
He's tactically adept, brings energy, his passing is direct and crisp and offers good link up play. His positional sense and movement in the box is among the best in our team, his off the ball movement is good as well and his football intelligence is actually impressive along with his spatial awareness which helps him get into good pockets of space in dangerous areas.

Finally, he's a proven big game player but he's had a poor season like most of the squad. Mata hasn't been any better but is on a bigger salary and never gets slated much because he's a fan favorite. Lingard may not be the most gifted footballer but these qualities are the reasons he displaced Depay and Di Maria for certain games. If Martial for instance had all these qualities he'd be twice the player because he's more talented.

What uses? He is not even a squad player worthy of the shirt.

Park wasn't always a fan favorite and he wasn't always consistent. I remember fans calling for his transfer and some were never convinced, he had to win them over, but look at his goal return. Lingard has scored more in less appearances for United

Not in the time he played, in our current time.
So we're presenting hypothetical situations as fact now?

Can't score , can't play through balls , can't assist can't dribble past opponents, can't cross the ball. Doesn't have enough pace.

The whole bull crap about movement and spatial awareness is so hyped that anyone who dint see lingard would think he is Suarez or mbappe level.

And what big game player ? He scores against Chelsea and in one fa cup final against palace and suddenly he becomes a big game player? It's laughable how the standards have fallen. A big game player is someone who the opposition takes note of before a game and has a game plan to nullify him. The opposition must be laughing their ass off when they see Jessi start. It's like we are playing with 10 men.

He has 5 goals this season and two of them were against Cardiff. And one amongst them is a penalty. One against pool which Allison luckily spilled. Squad player earlier used to be chicharito or a John o Shea or a Ronnie jhonsen who would come into the team and play their heart out. Who even though did not have the ability still bought some important trait to the team. Jlings today epitomizes how the standards have fallen at the club

Mata also has 5 goals this season and earns more money. I know this is not the Mata thread but really dude, this season has been shit all over. Also, do you actually watch United games? Are you forgetting the goals Lingard has scored against Arsenal and Liverpool as well? He also scored another goal against Chelsea. He has scored a total 7 goals against these three clubs. Who else can say that in this team? You're an embarrassment of a fan my man

If Lingard played under Fergie he'd probably be a different player all together. Fergie had nothing but praise for him and predicted that he'd be a late bloomer. He's a squad player at best clearly.
You could say that about almost any PL player then. There is a bar for squad players too, they all seem to start 25+ games a season. Not sure what bar we are trying to set, but the teams we are trying to catch would have Jesse nowhere near their squads. Why are we so insistent that he’s a ‘squad player?’. It seems that definition is used to mitigate any sort of standard.

Levels have changed. Any player who isn’t good enough to compete for a starting place is not good enough to be a squad player. Similarly to how the PL bar has raised. The only teams good enough to guarantee a top 4 place need to be able to compete for the title. That’s the only way. If you aren’t good enough to win the league you will struggle to make CL.

If we end up playing diamond formation, I think he could do a decent job as No.10.

But I would prefer someone like Madison, or even better Felix/Fernandes in that position.

He completely and utterly shits the bed when he gets the ball in dangerous positions. Flaps at a cross or falls at first contact then flaps at the ref like the muppet he is.

He finds space and runs to it, but his intention is not to receive the ball in those spaces because he has neither the the ability, the composure nor the strength to do anything with it. Every PL player through history almost has hit a “worldie” or two from out the box.

If we go into next season with Lingard as our number 10, relying on him as our main creative outlet then we'll be be battling relegation next season.

He's been a first team regular for the last 4 seasons and aside from a 2 month spell in the 17/18 season he's been useless.

He absolutely is not good enough

With Herrera gone I wonder rather than wasting money on a replacement, we can turn lingard into midfielder and put the money to good use of funding to replacing his position in attack where the bigger problems have been this season, there are many examples of wingers/no 10's converted into good midfielders?

Not only is he not good enough for a proper United first team, and arguably squad, but his wide-boy attitude means he seems to be a net negative in terms of setting an example for others too.

He's one of those white-suited Liverpool types from the 90s.

Sad to say, this might be true. He's 26 (27?). Hasn't showed any signs of maturing into a proper player.

There’s quite a few players in the championship I’d play ahead of him.

If he played for Bournemouth or whoever there’s no chance we’d want to sign him.

Want to bet? Of course he will - he’s a cert for the nations league in the summer.
No chance if Southgate is selecting players properly on their recent or current form. If, as I suspect, he will select some on past reputation then it’s likely Lingard will collect more caps.

I present people who understand football

One goal (free tap-in vs Arsenal) and one assist (5 yard side pass to a Pogba long rage against Huddersfield at home) since Cardiff away in December 22 (where he was shit in the entire 1st half).
Genuinely bizarre why people hate this guy, absolute wizard off the ball in the spaces. A joy to watch.
Dear lord haha

Think the poster deleted his initial post.

And to think, after years of me being labelled a ‘hater’ on here, I actually started to rate him for a period last season. I even cut him plenty of slack this season and I thought he might return to form but he’s been utterly diabolical.

Exactly the same. I have a close friend who idolises him and at one point I admitted to him that I may have been wrong about Lingard. But nah — he’s shite!

And you know this how? I think Lingard would be a valuable player in a team like Liverpool. They have Divock Origi who is not good enough to compete for a regular starting place but he's stepped up recently to keep them in the hunt for the league and he scored twice against Barcelona, both in the absence of their biggest star. Origi has only scored 7 goals this season and his last three have been Liverpool's biggest goals. If you look at RAWK before the goals you'll find he's one of their most vilified players.

Origi to be fair has fantastic pace and has performed well in a major tournament for Belgium benching Lukaku in the process.

Origi benched Lukaku twice in world cup 2014 but Lukaku played more minutes to my recollection and they both only scored one goal. Origi didn't make the squad for 2018 and his stock has fallen since

. Liverpool fans don't rate him much in general and there are questions about his technique and decision making but he's become a cult hero now in the last two big games, and he did score that fortunate last minute goal against Everton.

He's not starting 11 quality for them though and wouldn't be surprised if he was sold this summer

I wouldn't want Origi either. But I'd take him over the useless Lingard who supposedly has 'worldclass movement'. The quicker we get him out the quicker we move forward.

Yes useless, any player who is given as many minutes as he has, will most likely score more.
Is that all you have? He gets constantly selected by top managers at club and national team level. Which other player at United would most likely score more goals with Lingards minutes? Who is Lingard holding back?

Is that all I have ? How many times do people have to post his awful output for you to see he isn't good enough?

He gets selected by top managers, then those top managers get fired. Fellaini always got selected by those top managers too.

Greenwood would comfortably contribute more given his spot.

Those managers being fired has nothing to do with anything. LVG and Mourinho are among the most successful managers in world football and had every chance to replace Lingard. Solskjaer rates him too and so does the England coach. What do you say to that? You have nothing really. Greenwood is a youth superstar and an unknown quantity in first team football. You're clutching at straws. So please tell me which other first team player would 'score more goals' with Lingard's minutes. @ayushreddevil9 you can chime in with a reply too since you agree

It doesn't matter what someone thinks. We have seen Lingard play in the first team for quite a few years now. And his output is dreadful for a attacker. You're the one clutching at straws bringing up managers like Mourinho and Van Gaal and ignoring his awful output for a elite level club.

You asked me to name a player at the club who will contribute more than Lingard if given his minutes. I answered Greenwood. That should be sufficient for you.

Greenwood is not even an established first team player and hasn't scored his first senior goal yet. You think it makes sense to put him forward in this sense? Any poster with even a modicum of intellect would understand this. You have no answer. You also have no response as to why the current manager has expressed how much he values Lingard, and why he's also being selected for England or even part of the setup altogether for being such a 'useless' player.

I think you'll find alot of posters would agree with me regarding Greenwood>Lingard

Do you watch football and judge footballers on how highly they're rated by their managers?

Lingard's output is awful for a starting attacker at a elite level club, do you agree?

Trusting too many shite players was the downfall of Jose. Lingard was one of them. If you work hard, run around even if you have zero technical ability than you are definitely starting for a Mourinho team.

LvG didn't play him that much and he was literally a nothing player(just like now) under him too.

Regarding England, the midfield choices are very underwhelming. Lingard is the best amongst worst.

We have had chances to replace him but we didn't. We deserve to be where we are because we don't dispose the dross we have.
