Did you not see the last friendly, the one where Gomes was also on the bench and only made a few minutes appearance due to an injury. If you don't get enough minutes in pre season you wont be ready for the season. Its not rocket science.

I'm not just talking about today. He hasn't featured as much as others on tour and last season he seemed to be behind Greenwood, Chong and Garner. Under Jose it seemed like he was the u23 player that would be pushed through next after McTominay.
