His pressing is needed to help us win the ball back, but he is just so basic with everything he does. We need a better creative player at the position he plays.

I just read this bit on reddit :

"
Q. Did Jesse Lingard get a PL goal or assist in the following months?

May 18? No

Augt 18? No

Sep 18? No

Oct 18? No

Nov 18? No

Dec 2018? YES (4 Goals, 2 assists)

Jan 19? No

Feb 19? No

Mar 19? No

Apr 19? No

May 19? No

Aug 19? No
"

I mean if this true than this is beyond tragic. Something needs to be done. You can't and I repeat just CAN'T have your number 10 in a 4231 system be this toothless. Literally No end product. He needs to be replaced from the starting 11.

Those stats are unacceptable if true.
That’s it, Lingard is fecking shite and useless. We need to bench him.

Simply not good enough to start, along with McTominay he is just isn’t competent enough to play position he is playing as a starter.

Formation needs a rethink as no point playing a number ten when options are Lingard it Mata.

I'm not gonna bother moaning about him he is what he is. The penny will soon drop with Ole just like it did with Smalling and Jones.

First goal doesn't happen without him, was vital in winning the midfield battle and maintained by control in the first half.

Typical Caf scapegoating, easy to understand why as well.
You just sound like a parody at this point. Literally everyone can see how poor he is, yet you still defend the guy. There is loyalty, and then just delusion....

He is not even a basic football player, he is a tad below that level and it evidently shows every other week. That being said, he doesn't pick himself for games, the buck stops with Ole.

Turned down Bruno Fernandes because he doesn't pass the ball well enough...
Yeah........ to the ball boys! Did you see his pass off the pitch from AWB throw-in late in the game!!!

While there are definite positives about Lingard, we definitely need to upgrade in the number 10 position if we want to be decisive and come out with 3 points in tight games. His touch and play are just too erratic for him to play in such a crucial area of the pitch. There were so many moments where he found himself in a good position to build an attack but his bad touch meant that he had to go back to maintain possession and we lost the attacking momentum.

Honestly I'm not sure this is true, his movement yesterday was one of the poor things about his game

he's on borrowed time at the moment, and benefitting from our lack of signings in the summer

it's obvious why he's being picked, for his energy and pressing ability - but you can't keep your place if you offer nothing in end product

his off the ball movement doesn't seem to be what is used to be either

Gomes couldn't possibly do any worse. And let's be honest he'd probably do much much better as he's an actual footballer unlike Jesse.

Its not just the movement though. Its the pressing, closing down, and also carrying the ball up field when on break- when he is on one of his runs he looks almost unstoppable. Its just that the latter is too infrequent for him to have a constant impact. Plus, the end product is lacking and that unfortunately does not look like improving.

Yes then he gives the ball away when he needs to make a pass, or under hits the pass or miss places it and kills the momentum of the attack.
Pressing and closing down cannot be the main qualities of your number 10 if you want to win football matches. At the moment the main reasons for being part of our attack are defensive. Thats fine and are good attributes but will kill us in the end if he has yet another season without scoring or assisting goals for the team which ultimately and first and foremost it is his job to do.

I don’t think I am disagreeing with you there. I stated before that we need to upgrade in his position and was really disappointed we didn’t buy a number 10 this summer.

Yes its disappointing, we have other options in the squad though, he needs dropping. What he brings (running) can be done by others too (Pereira, Fred)

The most frustrating thing is when he picks up the ball, you watch the game happening around him and you’re visioning THAT pass that you KNOW a quality player can pull off and instead you just watch lingard dribble around playing keep ball. 0 goals 0 assists in 260 days of football. 0 goal contributions in 2019. What the flying feck????

Not to mention all the chances he misses because of his piss poor technique.

Poor guy has been at united for 19/26 of his years. If he was told to feck off I’m not sure he’ll know what to do in life.

Isn’t it a problem that out of roughly 55 minutes of dominance, our no 10 produces one meaningful attacking action?

It’s annoying because Ole seems to think that Lingard is the only player who can press the opposition. I’d rather have a slightly worse press if it meant that we’d get some quality on the ball, given we’re likely to dominate possession more than we’re going to be pushed back into our own half.

I was just thinking about how unhappy Jesse Lingard makes me as a United fan. He loses concentration in critical moments, wasteful in front of goal, does not have an eye for a pass and is generally poor with a football. These are all horrible traits for a our number 10 to have.
However, in this current United team, he's probably the best we can do. If it's not for his pressing and off the ball movement, Wolves would probably have a better base to build their attacks and get into the game. He simply does not stop running and it happens to be integral to the way we play and subsequently stop our opponents from playing themselves.
Our other options are simply not good enough or simply not ready (Mata, Perreira & Gomes).
He has to be replaced(should have been replaced actually) ASAP for us to improve but for now, especially in the big games I just don't see any other viable options.

Useful squad player imo, but is nowhere near good enough to be a starter. For now i would play Fred and McT deep and let Pogba play as the advanced MF player
We just dominated wolves away and you would change it up and place pogba in the hole vs a team with 3 central defenders and 3 centre mids so that he can't receive the ball ?

I get that we didn't win but it isn't because x or y player played, it is because we missed chances including a peno and conceded a long shot that rarely goes in in practice. Putting our best player in the position where lingard just showed you can't receive the ball ...

I don’t really see many considerably better options in the squad actually. Pereira is better on the ball but doesn’t have the same movement, while playing Fred will mean that Pogba will be moved up. Not a big fan of that because then we don’t have enough quality to get the ball to Pogba in the right areas and he will be isolated - this was one of the main problems I thought from last season and has led to Ole adopting the 4-2-3-1 system. Thats why I felt really disappointed that we didn’t invest in at least one of a creative CM or a number 10. Either one could have been the solutions to the creative problems we will face this season.

I am really hoping to see more of Gomes to see if he can make the difference.

Dominated is not the word i would use.

We have played well so far but the Chelsea score flattered us. We have had 7 shots on target and scored 5 of them. Take away the 3 counter attacks v Chelsea and we're not really creating that much in normal situations. We can't continue with Pogba playing so far from our attackers and Lingard in the 10 position creating nothing.

Honestly, other than his movement, he offers little to nothing and his goals/assists are too few and far between.

Lingards movement has been non existent for a while. Fred can actually play as a 10. Lingard has zero quality on the ball

I think the main problem is that you could probably get away with Lingard (although not if truly pushing for title) if the other 3 main attackers were more effective but given he is actually the senior man/supposedly finished article in the attack it causes problems as he just isn't effective enough.

He does have his uses in that he is a hard worker, tidy player and can occasionally do something special and definitely has something to offer the squad but in the overall picture of our attack I think it will cause a problem over the season if he is the main man there.

It will be interesting to see what we do in some of the easier games e.g. does Mata come in or does Pogba get pushed up. Mata doesn't really suit the pressing we're trying to do and Pogba has a tendency to come deep which could leave Martial isolated and we lose his passing from midfield.

Exactly! It's straight-up shocking how he seems unable to make the simplest of passes which is in turn either halting our attack (because opposition retrieves the ball) or he slows down our attack, because our player gotta go back to pick up to ball after Lingard's poor pass.

He's so ineffectual it hurts. I know he's not the greatest technically, but usually he's better than that.

I'm so so sure we would be begging for lingard back after 1 game of your fred experiment
My preference would be to try Gomes, however Fred funnily enough has more assists and goals than Lingard does in 2019 and also presses just as much

I’d sacrifice his pressing for someone who has more quality i.e. Bruno. We have plenty of runners in this squad.
Its annoying we did not sign him, Bruno also has a great engine and works hard so I could see him pressing well

All he’s good at is bringing the ball out from deep and running it to the halfway line, then passing to Pogba who can actually make something happen. It’s like playing with 10 men every time he plays. He’s in there for his energy and pressing, which is a good quality to have but not at the expense of offering absolutely nothing on the ball.

A lot of managers have their favourites, players that seem to play no matter what, frustrating the fans for years. Feels like Lingard is going to be Ole’s.

Cannot believe he was the oldest player in our starting XI. Image having JLingz as the most senior member who you look to for experience.

Will have to take your word on it, haven’t seen enough of Fred in the number 10 position and from what I have seen in the midfield stint, he would be equally frustrating as Lingard with his misplaced and sloppy passes.
