So frustrating seeing this all play out. Very similar to the Pogba situation, except we were in better condition then and it didn't feel so bad as it happened.

I’ve felt since Ole took over, when mentioning youngsters that Gomes has always been an after thought for some reason.

Mason, Chongey, Jimmey.......and er that small lad.

I think Oles got this one badly wrong. He’s the best of the lot for me.
I agree, Gomes should be given more game time ahead of Mata, Lingard, and Pereira. He has more skill than all of them together. Can't see what the problem with Ole is, unless he knows something we don't.

He was given a chance at the start of the season and failed to impress. Now he must wait for another opportunity. If he doesn't have the patience for that then perhaps he isn't suited to be a United player. He's good but not Sancho good, not just yet.

He didn't really get a fair chance, especially not considering how many chances players like Pereira, Mata and Lingard have got.

He hasn’t been given a fair crack of the whip. At all. And yet I would almost lean more towards the opposite being true - in the time he has actually managed to get on the pitch he has shown that he should be getting more, ahead of any of Pereira, Lingard or Mata.

Clearly he knows more than an Internet forum about a player he works with...

Let's be honest it doesn't always work that way. Managers form their own opinions and have their own likes/dislikes.

Maybe Gomes lack of speed makes him an instant no in his mind. I don't suspect he's a fan of fancy technical players, more industry and speed. Dan James is his ideal player.

It wasn't as if we didn't try to keep Pogba at United, there was one big fat agent that prevented that from happening.

And the fact fergie wouldn't give him first team game time as he felt he wasn't ready or good enough make the team...

And aren't we trying to keep Angel?

No agent forced Pogba to do anything against his will. He wanted to leave because he had fullbacks being played out of position ahead of him. Angel similarly is wanting out due to game time. It is the exact same scenario. So this manager knows all is clearly nonsense as Ole isn't even close to Fergie.

Of course we are but we won't be held to ransom by him, just like Pogba and his Raiola. They wanted Pogba to get more game time plus for us to blow up our reserve team wage structure to keep him at United, completely unrealistic demands, as Pogba wasn't even that great that season for the reserves.

Well Ole surely knows a lot more than you and I as he sees him everyday in training, maybe he isn't happy with his attitude etc, who knows. We can only support the players that are committed getting United back to the top, if Gomes doesn't want to help us then so be it, the club will keep moving without him.

The game time was a realistic demand. Full backs played as midfielders instead of Pogba but when Pogba left for Juventus he walked into a midfield or Pirlo, Vidal and Marchissio (a better midfield than United midfield). Pogba felt he was ready and it turned out he was right. He was right in wanting to be a first team member and the wages which come with being a first team member. It wasnt unrealistic at all... time has proven Pogba was right and that Fergie made a mistake.

Hopefully Ole wont make the same mistake. Playing full backs in midfield is a bit strange but playing Lingard at all might even be a stranger option...

Yeah, let's haggle over a few extra quid a week and risk losing a potential star player, who will end up costing millions. Great logic, just like it was stupid back then too!

We did not have anything like a stable or settled team earlier in the season when Gomes played, and it showed, as we looked all over the place, young players need good seasoned pro's around them to guide them, but McTominay, Fred, Pereira etc are not seasoned pro's, they are playing for their own futures. For the past few matches we seem to be getting a much more solid look about us. With this much more stable team, I think he could slot in nicely at 10, replacing Pereira (if McTominay is fit, and that is a very big if). Perhaps we could play Pereira in McTominay's place, and still give him the spot.

Why should he sign though? We're going nowhere as a club it would be like tying himself to a sinking ship.

congrats you win the prize for most ridiculous post !

Name me any other premiership club that has given more chances to academy players than us . We may have our problems but we are far from a sinking ship .
Of all the kids given opportunities this season Chong and Gomes have looked the most out of there depth in the first team both are very slight in terms of build and don’t look ready for the rigours of the prem, both have huge potential and would be crazy not to sign new contracts as they are more likely to make it here rather than anywhere else , time is on there side they need to show loyalty and patience .

Letting go of a seriously talented player. Need to get him some game time ASAP.

He wants to do a Pogba apparently
I highly doubt he 'wants' to do a Pogba. But he's in an almost identical position as Pogba was (and Sancho was at City), where he feels he should be getting more game time than he has been so he will quite likely make the same decision and leave. His first preference would certainly be to actually get that game time here.

Both Pogba and Sancho went on to prove that they were right. We'll have to wait and see whether Gomes proves the same. Although hopefully it won't come to that and he'll end up getting games and signing a new contract.

How did Gomes look out of his depth? Nothing Chong tried came off, in contrast to Gomes whose only fault was not seeing enough of the ball.

From the article it says he had a loan deal lined up in January, which was refused by Solskjær. Since then, it sounds like contract discussions haven’t been positive, and he isn’t getting game time in respect of this.

Must be said it will be very negligent of the club if Gomes and Chong end up walking on a free. Irrespective if they’ve taken chances or looked good enough thus far, that’s still two of the biggest and hyped youth talents at the club. Not the best look for all the other kids coming through.
its usually these ones who don't make it into the 1st team. go through the academy prospects who have broken into the first team, over the past 20 years and player 25 + games per season.
Evans, O'Shea, Fletcher, Rashy, McTom, Da Silva x 2, Brown, Gibson, Welback, Cleverley. How many were hyped as certified superstars?

Now think of all those who didn't make it
Ravel, Rossi, Keane, Wilson, Macheda, Gomes, Chong

going back the last 20 years, Rashford and Welbeck were the only winners of the Jimmy Murphy award who you could consider 1st team regulars. Gibson was more a bench player. The rest were never seen again.........

There may be a lot of reasons for not playing him. Contract situation is one. Maybe he's not showing it in training could be the main reason as far as we know. There is no God given right that he should play regardless of what he's showing in the training. He isn't that accomplished yet

I am tired of hearing these kind of sayings regurgitated every time Gomes is mentioned. You don't pass judgement on someone without a fair trial. Ole hasn't given Gomes one. It becomes even more irritating because Mata and Lingard have consistently played crap football, even when surrounded by the best squad we can assemble. I repeat, anything short of playing him in his natural position, with the best players in the team around him should not be used to judge him. That includes any meaningless introduction 5 mins to end of game, even if in his natural position. And even with his best position and the best we have, you can not just judge a young player after one game. It's pointless comparing him to Williams or any other player, people are different. Sure there is no God given right he should play but there is also no God given right that Ole should be in charge. He shouldn't take his legendary statue for granted.

Take a look at the Astana game and you would realise he was one of the better players that day. It wasn't his fault that Matic and Fred chose not to or were incapable of passing to him when he took up intelligent positions. Please look at the video of his display in that game and compared it to those of Lingard and Mata in the individual games they have played. The only valid argument against his play that day was that he should have dropped deeper to get the ball when the old guards failed to pick him out. But we are talking of kids for goodness sake, it was the duty of the more experienced players to help guide him.

Now that's a point worth noting. I like Greenwood and Garner and don't see any need comparing those young players against each other. I believe they both have a bright future, all things being equal. However anyone arguing that they both are better than Gomes (if we are allowed any comparison) because they have played better is blinkered. Greenwood has had more poor outings than good ones, but an objective analysis will always show he is not another overhyped kid. He needs time and encouragement. Garner has a game in Europa league which was poor, and many came out to tell us how useless and overhyped he was, even when there were two to three times when he played lovely, weighted forward passes in between the lines. Something the likes of Mata, Lingard, Fred (except in the last two games or so) have failed to do. These are the things you look out for, not whether kids can carry the burden of a team full of old and expired players. The next time against Chelsea we all saw a different Garner, only to be followed by another poor showing.

If I were Gomes, I wouldn't sign any contract if getting playing time is conditioned on it.

it's very early to say they haven't made it, they haven't started yet. Gomes will make it somewhere, hopefully here, Chong will have at least a decent career but I suspect he'll only be a player capapble of making at United in his late 20's.

Could you please tell which game he was given a chance at the start of the season? And that Sancho talk is ridiculous, I am sorry to say. Haven't you seen Sancho disappear in some games? Gomes was good enough to be the captain and an important player in a team comprising that same Sancho, Foden, etc. The only reason he wasn't very prominent when the group won the world cup was that he was just returning from injury and wasn't fully fit. Sancho would still be another faceless kid if he wasn't given the chance and encouragement to play at Dortmund. The problem is that some don't understand the kind of player Gomes is. I still recall Gomes, Garner and Levitt embarrasing grown men (Rotherham) in the EFL cup while our old warlords struggled against mighty Rochadale. Shouldn't that be a reminder that those kids will play better when played in the right positions and with good chemistry between them and the rest of the players? Perhaps an indication that Ole is the problem

Totally unfair assement. You don't stick him out of position, surrounded by piss poor players and expect him to shine. If his build and strength are holding him back why is legless Mata still playing? We should beg Emile Heskey to come out of retirement and play for us (I know they are different players)

Now don't get me wrong, I haven't said he is a sure bet if given enough and fair time. However you'll never know what he can do until he is given the chance, a proper chance. If you want him to go on loan then you need to assess him properly, in order to see where he should be headed and how he should be handled. There is no point promoting him to the senior team only to continually play Mata and Lingard ahead of him. Why not let him stay with the U23?

I remember Pogba saying he needs more game time before he signs a new contract. Fergie played him but Raiola convinced him to sign for Juve anyway.
The main issue was Raiola who knew his paycheck would be far bigger if Pogba signed for Juve than if he signed a new contract with us.
I just hope that Gomes is not being advised to go the same route

Yeah let's break a wage structure and pay every player what they want, no matter what age, skill or experience, great logic.

I don't subscribe to that. He got sparing pity minutes. It was a last dash attempt but the writing was on the wall. You can talk about Raiola lining his pockets all you want but he got his client a great move into the 1st team of a better side who appreciated his talents right away and were massively successful. He is actually quite a good agent for his clients. How often does he Make them "downgrade" for his pockets? They seem to go to big clubs and some better ones than currently. United had the chance to play him and Juve did.....

Pogba wasn't playing great at the time for the reserves though that season so couldn't start making unrealistic demands, no matter who played in the same position as him. But he hadn't proven anything at the time, so how can you hand a reserve team player first team wages along with blowing a wage structure, look at what it did with Alexis and his wages.

https://www.manutd.com/en/news/detail/man-utd-players-on-international-duty-round-up

Club's international roundup pretending that Angel and Chong don't exist anymore.
Chong came on for the last ten minutes and Gomes was taken off in the second half so i'm assuming neither did anything of note. Pogba I can understand because we poached him from France at a young age and he owed us nothing, but I'd be very disappointed if Gomes just left us. He can always sign the contract and then ask for a loan in January if he is that desperate for immediate first team action.

I reiterate that Mata will get more minutes than Gomes this season, ridiculous.

Gomes deserves so many more chances than he has been given, if he values his career he’ll be off in the Summer.

I really hope Gomes stays. He probably needs a loan in January to the Championship where he can develop week in week out.
