Poor losing the ball for the Newcastle goal. Needs to be banned from shooting as it ends up ballooning into row Z. Good game outside of that.

His stamina needs to be appreciated. He’s started so many games for us and today was one of those games where he’s done well. If we can add some consistency to his game, particularly his passing which can be very erratic, he can become a key player for us.

I still think he's absolutely shite and people are latching on to a month of ok form because it's a marked improvement on how abysmal he was before that.

Even today he gave away a goal because he fecked up the basics..

I'd place half of the fault of losing the ball for Newcastle's goal on the coaching and overall team to be honest.

He was there trying to give an option for a throw in from AWB, in a tight space when there should have been at least 2-3 more easier options.

I agree, there were no options for him, also there's plenty happens after that which was the actual reason/reasons for the goal.

Played quite well other than losing the ball far up the pitch and being on the floor, taking himself out of the move for Newcastle's first goal. Shaw and Lindelof could have done a bit better to save us from conceding after though.

On the ball a lot, and played a lot of his sweeping zipping passes to set us off. 3 key passes the most in the team

Still loses possession in dangerous situations. Caused their goal today. A squad player and nothing more for me. Needs to show more than just transporting the ball from a to b before I'm convinced.
he didn't lose possession in a dangerous area, he lost the ball in their half, our defenders didn't deal with their attackers, longstaff was left unmarked in our box, which should have never happened.

Someone needs to tell him to stop shooting from 20+ yards. He tries at least 3 per game and they sail over the bar every single time. Its usually when we have decent options in attack too.

"Gave away a goal" is not how I'd described getting tackled in the opposition half of the pitch.

He's an average player, but to use the goal yesterday as a vehicle to criticise him is incredibly harsh.

He did give the ball away which led the goal but let's be honest it wasn't just basic, Bissaka should have never aim at him when he was surrounded with 3 players. Newcastle did very well to close him down very quickly with 3 players as well. Not many players can do much in that situation unless if you are Xavi, Iniesta or Scholes ball retention level. Overall he was good today.

I agree that goal is at least as much on Wan Bisakka, he actually took another couple of terrible throws as well. You just have to play the percentages with throws like that, work the line unless an easy passing option is available. Giving it to the Fred there at mid height is a hospital pass and frankly it’s unfair that Fred is taking the blame but equally unsurprising.

For me he needs to open up his body and switch the ball to the left here. Instead he takes a touch inwards and invites pressure.

Carrick-esque with some of his passes to feet. More of this and we only need to buy one new midfielder.

The most important thing is that he has improved, we need both quality and quantity. Matic looks to be leaving as well, so this is one less squad option to worry about, especially with our limitation of doing one deal at a time apparently.

He needs to be consistent on a regular basis to be a starter in the team, but he is hard working, is not injury prone and has good ability to at least be a squad player at the club.

Just a moment of appreciation for this man with 4 lungs busting them for Manchester United week in week out. He works his socks off.

Side note - I love how he started to change his ball handling style when Pogba came on. It was almost a eureka moment of how to retain possession easier.

He usually does an odd - almost amateurish - touch with the inside of his foot to move the ball around when in possession. You can see how that invites a lot of pressure. When Pogba came on he was putting his foot on top the ball and using the outside of his foot more often. It made him looked more relaxed in possession which naturally drives pressing away from you. Pogba effect.

Thank you Fred. That kid has really embraced everything it means to be at United

He’s been fantastic ever since PSG let’s be honest, and even before that he had good games like arsenal away. He just ruined them with some dodgy passes or touches.

as I said last season he just needed some time to settle, now we’re seeing why we paid so much money. Not such a joke anymore is he?

Seriously over the top analysis of Fred . He's been decent or good for the past dozen or so games . We paid over 50 million he does the easy stuff well at the moment . We will never win trophies with Fred starting in our midfield

So one player means we will never win trophies?

No longer terrified when he's facing De Gea and receives the ball closest to him.

Also noticed he has a great capacity for playing passes à la Carrick, sliding them into the forwards or more advanced players on the ground between the lines.

All in all, glad we've got him at the minute.

Won't be surprised if Jose changes his tune about what went on before we opted to sign Fred. :)

Not for me.

50m is nothing these days, fred has been a solid midfielder in helping us win possession and keep the ball rotating.

the only thing he lacks is goals at present.

He's alway had that turn on the ball/opening of the body ability though. It's one of the major reasons why we brought him because he's able to transition the play with those light touches and feints.

He's been showing it plenty in these run of games.

As I said in the McTomminay thread, it's such a massive shame we don't get to see all three of them play together if the knee injury is serious.

Yeah but McTominay does it alot better . We need something better in midfield but he is a useful squad member

Still too loose with the ball at times. Many goals conceded from him losing possession in the middle.

Not always his fault since there's sometimes no one giving him options.

Fred has been excellent this year, mctominay has had more stinkers himself but I’d say he’s been good also. These 2 aren’t a problem, we’ve won leagues with worse.

No he doesn't. Fred has more touches, many more passes and a higher completion percentage every single game they play together.
Let's see how Fred does the next few games without McTominay beside him . Don't get me wrong I'm delighted to see Fred starting more games but for me he offers very little to influence games

Stats stats stats . McTominay has way more influence on most games . Let's see how Fred does without someone doing all the donkey work when Scott is injured

We need 2 at least to replace Herrera and Fellaini who have left since Ole came. You could also argue for one more making 3 to replace Matic who needs to be moved on.
Fair point. Forgot that Matic exists.

Like it or not, Fred is already a key player for us. He performs better in both defensive and offensive duties than most our other midfielders in key areas such as pass completion and key passes, as well as tackles and intercepts. His numbers are by no means ground breaking, but by comparison to others in our team he is outperforming them.
He has taken a while to find his feet, but has now started to show what he can do. I found myself watching his game looking for errors after his difficult start, but actually being really impressed with how his passing has improved.

I hope he continues to push on performance wise as he has now built a relationship and understanding with some of his teammates that is really helping with his distribution, and as long as he continues to put in the work (he does have a good engine) I can see him becoming a fan favourite despite his indifferent/disastrous start.
Go Fred.

Thought he was good, but that picture shows to me that he's in a decent amount of space - Newcastle players have a radius around him and he has a square 1-2 on for Wan Bissaka to return.

He has the same issues as McTominay for me. Not good enough as a true CDM or a box to box. Its hard to see where to go with them. Could he hold the midfield with two attacking midfielders like Fernandinho? Not really. Can he be a true box to box if we buy a CDM by which he needs to score and create more. Not really. So we have to accommodate his weaknesses by having someone like McTominay next to him. Its the same for McTominay he needs Fred to share the defensive duties but then we lack creativity. Im hoping Pogba is enough to make up for having two defensive midfielders.

If he passes it back to Bissaka, don’t you think the ball would have been intercepted by Almiron?

No, because he would move forward offering for the give-and-go. You can see he already has a big head start over Almeron.
