When you factor in De Ligt's reported wages the deal was a lot more expensive than Maguire.
Lets also not forget, in 3 years time when maybe/ hopefully we have built a reasonable team, Railoa will be looking to move De Ligt on whereas I think Maguire will not do that and will stay.

We did not want another Pogba fiasco where every year Barca or Madrid links are there. It was a good deal all round.

Does anyone else have a problem with our current targets? We are likely to overpay in the transfer fee and wages for these players.

The likes of Sancho for example whilst being a great player is just another overpaid player at United(if he joined).

To name a few more I would be concerned about - Grealish, Maddison, Van de Beek, Koulibaly, Fernandes.

Look at what Liverpool have achieved with what they've paid for their players and what they pay them in wages.

Our players are horrendously overpaid for what they produce and these targets aren't going to ease that concern.

Well, Liverpool's recent success (tough to call it a true success with one trophy won, but ok - they'll get the Premier League this season) is strongly related to Klopp getting pragmatic and being able to spend large amounts of money on established players, on contrary to what he was claiming when he first arrived to England. Van Dijk is a good example of that kind of transfer - they payed above the odds for him and never looked back, as he proved to be such a monumental signing for them. Keita and Alisson were both 60m+ deals as well if I am not mistaken, Fabinho costed as much as what we payed for Fred.

Yes, our players seem overpaid for how United is playing these years, but let's not have an illusion that more successful English clubs are paying less for their players and dominating due to multiple successful ca. 10m transfer punts that worked out wonderfully. United is not the best place to develop recently, and without true leaders in the locker room, on the pitch and among the management, it's not that easy to reach your full potential. I think players like Grealish, Fernandes, Sancho or to a lesser extent Koulibaly are precisely what we need - established players, ready to step in and instantly improve first team but still with a room for development and hunger to win their first relevant trophies.

We should try and bag players for reasonable fees but I'd make an exception for somebody like Sancho.

And while I'd prefer us pickup players for reasonable fees, there's been many successful teams that have been build on heavy spending - see Chelsea, City and Madrid for example. Also Liverpool aren't the paupers people pretend they are. They too have spent enormous amounts. It's the excellent management that has to accompany the money spent

Who? Sport Witness don't create the stories, they simply report them. Think they do a brilliant job personally.

Great post, while their net spend is great thanks to Bournemouth and Barcelona, they’ve still paid 50+ million on some cornerstone players, unfortunately we have had two managers who have spent 700-800 million on essentially 2-3 serviceable players (Shaw, Lindelof and Fred) and 1 starter (Pogba).

That tends to hinder your development as a team when you are constantly changing the starting lineup, instead of adding quality to a good team like Liverpool did with VVD/Alisson etc.

I don't disagree with either of you. The wages concern me though.

It could be argued that due to those fees the players aren't as motivated or determined and in many cases are even happy to sit on the bench on take their money.

Are they likely to perform at the same level as when they were trying for that big move, now that they earn extortionate wages? The comparisons of what we pay certain players compared to other clubs are painful to see. De Gea earns 4 times that of Allison, even when we could have let him see out his contract and brought back Henderson next year.

Been away for 3 weeks. Wondering what I've missed, while nursing the awful feeling I've missed nothing at all. For starters, our team roster remains the same... Is Ed done with Disneyland? The clock is ticking!

Is he any good? what type of midfielder?
CM and CDM

Was one of the brightest talents for that position in Spain a couple of years ago, but didnt get much trust in Real and now neither in Athletico.

So doesnt look like that, no. Havent watched him though. But my guess is he is better than Rice seeing both of the Madrid teams saw something in him.

Somewhat of a gamble , but since its only a loan its not a big one.

Marcos llorente was incredible at Alves. Did ok with minimal minutes at Real. Went onto to sign for Atletico which surprised alot of Real fans. Looked slow and not on his game at Atletico. Hardly got any minutes after a poor first 4 games of his 1st season and due to Saul, koke and Partey being preferred by Diego Simeone, he's not played.

His potential was thought of as being huge early on. I would be happy for a loan. Plays as a holding midfielder/Cm. His best attributes are interceptions and ball retention.

Stylistically is what we are crying out for (deep lying passing midfielder who will help in possession). Had a few good seasons, left Real Madrid to get more playing time at Atletico but then got stuck behind Partey who is in good form and cant get much of a look in (and also didnt really step up there). Could reignite his career here where he would compete with Fred for that spot. I'd be all for it.

To me, he’s a coin toss between Lindelof as to who is the better player. He is better than Jones, Bailly and currently Axel. That said, it’s unsurprising that teams are coming in for our better back up defenders first.
