I dread to think what this wee cnut would do to Peru with its weak health system and dense population in Lima.
And now with our first confirmed cases in Spain which has 4 direct flights a day to Lima, we are now at risk.
Bear in mind it costs a few grand even for a vaccine for some jungle bugs. It's not worth thinking about.
My international health insurance has a clause for only 50% cover with any new viruses which explore humans for the first time.

I read that regular seasonal flu kills up to 600,000 people worldwide each year. How much worse is this so far in comparison?
5-20% of the US population catch the flu every year. If we assume that the same happens worldwide (it is probably higher considering the health system and hygiene in most countries is worse), it means that 385m-1.54b people catch the flu. If as many people catch coronavirus, then with its death rate of 2.3%, it will kill 9m-35m people, which is 15-60 times higher than the number of people who get killed from the regular flu.

Bear in mind, it is possible to get this worse. Spanish flu infected around 27% of the world population (and had a very high mortality rate), while swine flu (closely related to Spanish flu being from the same virus, but mutated and much less deadly) infected 11-21% of the world population.

The worst-case scenario is pretty bad.

I have an auto-immune disease so I'm getting slightly concerned about this now. Seems a pandemic is inevitable at this point.

Surely the number of actual cases is much higher than what is reported? For a case to be reported, an individual must seek medical attention, right? Going by personal experience and common sense, majority of people don't go to seek medical attention unless they have major symptoms. If only some cases result in symptoms that require medical attention, there must be thousands of people worldwide by now that have the virus who experience mild symptoms that don't require medical attention?

I'm travelling to Israel and Jordan in 2 weeks and not really concerned - the chance I get it there isn't suddenly higher than the chance I'm getting it here in Belgium.
Going to Israel in two months. Hope it will get better by then. So far looks like Israel are being extra cautious - denying entry to individuals from a lot of Asian countries and as of lately requiring those who arrive from Italy to self quarantine for 14 days.

When they close off Jerusalem ala World War Z, then we’ll know it’s bad.
My issue is that I don’t know who to trust, leaving the Orange idiot out if this as you know if his mouth is moving he’s probably lying. Is it so bad they don’t want to set off a panic or is it really overblown?
That’s the tough part. If it’s really bad I feel that we won’t be told until it’s gotten so they can’t hide it anymore.

You'd be insane to book a holiday anywhere.

Everyone I know going away over the next few months have been in contact with there travel provider in panic. Insane thing is people could be dropping dead left right and centre and as long as the government don't block flights to a certain place they are within their rights to not pay you back. Its basically travel at your own risk or lose your holiday.
You're coming across a bit uptight mate, I think you might need a holiday or something.

We've been told by work that if you go holiday in northern italy and get it then they'll be no sick pay. I mean i suppose that's fair but that list of countries is going to expand soon.

Feet up at home.
Paper carried a tiny story saying someone in China had come up with a vaccine made from yeast. Sounds like bollocks.

I'm curious as to why Trump thinks Mike Pence is the person to coordinate the (inadequate) American response to this. Surely the Director of their national CDC would be the right fit? You know, an actual senior public health doctor?

A senior public health doctor may not agree with him and request actions that don't fit Trumps agenda? He'd potentially be a thorn in the presidents side with actual knowledge and solutions. Completely wrong but ...

How are you guys faring in Italy?

In Singapore last week there were no checks anywhere and not that many people were wearing masks. In Australia now you wouldn't have a clue anything is happening.

Just came back from Brighton. Didn't really notice any panic or mask wearing down there. Only saw one person on the tube with one tbh.

Just keep sanitising your hands and hope you don't get it. Nowt much else you can do.

We will almost certainly break 500 cases today, although the real number is likely much higher.

The government has said they are stopping testing people without symptoms. Probably because there are only so many testing kits, but also because half the cases they are having to announce are coming from people with no symptoms.

Life hasn't drastically changed in my part of Lombardy but walk around a bit and its immediately obvious something isn't right.

Now a confirmed case in my county, Derbyshire. Here we go!
I'm in Derbyshire too and specifically Belper, and we've got a Derbyshire Senior Cup semi-final which has been postponed twice due to waterlogged pitches.

The Derbyshire FA have said if it gets called off again it might get moved to the plastic pitch at........ Buxton

That was my first thought but i guess if it's an area which the government are advising not to go to then it's self-induced. You'd still get statuary of course just not contractual sick pay.

I think it's just them guarding against all the people thinking of using it as an excuse for time off.

I know a few people over in your neck of the woods and Ambergate, spent a lot of time there while at Derby Uni and worked over one summer in a Tyre fitting place behind the old bus station thing, dunno if it's still there.

We have a guy at work who commutes all the way from Buxton, I've just wandered over to his office to have a chat about it and he's not in.

I don't think so. My Mrs is a Solicitor and her firm are taking the same stance. Anyone choosing to travel to certain areas are being told to either not go or stay at home unpaid for two weeks post return.

They are also asking clients who are ringing in to make appointments whether they have travelled in the last month. They are taking strong action.

Heard the same for a lot of Asia, makes you wonder why such hysteria on this side of the world?

But how can any workplace arbitrarily choose countries to which you can and cannot travel, going against government advise?
