Really doesn't make any difference if the guy is Caucasian. You cannot use language that people will feel is racist no matter who you are talking too.

This is an unfortunate incident I don't believe there was anything racist intended I don't think too many do if any.

However I can see how it could be judged to be offensive to some in our society.

It makes no difference that it may be ok in South America he is playing and living here and that's what counts.

I expect he will get at most 3 games we just have to accept it
By this logic you cannot say something about for example your black car, in Spanish, on twitter. Because of the word for color black. Do you realize how ridiculous this justification sounds?

Certainly can’t be any worse. How long was he suspended for?
he got a 1 game suspension, although someone just commented saying the FA has since changed it to a minimum 3 game ban. personally would appeal it and take it higher if was going to be banned for 3 games and a previous person only got 1 game.

Yes imagine it happening the other way around? It's just the most bizarre thing. The FA have surely shot themselves in the foot and have been ignorant and actually causing racism by choosing to charge him.
In Turkey, Pitch means bastard or brothel. Imagine the amount of bans issued or is English exempt from interpretation?

Can he play tonight then we accept? (Not that we should)
He can play until we appeal on the 4th if needed, yes.

To summarize -
The accept decision ban length is 3 games, this was increased from 1 game at the start of this season.
He's available until we respond up to the deadline which is the 4th of Jan. If we accept the charge on that date or any date before he will be banned for 3 games from the date we accept.
If we appeal at any point up until the 4th of Jan than the ban could be increased/decreased depending on the result of the appeal.

Cant we just accept the ban now? So he'll be out for today, leeds game and league cup.
This sounds the best way to go. I can't see the corrupt Scouse loving FA (he he) letting this go and enforcing the 3 match ban. I'm sure Ole has said in his presser that he won't be ready for today anyway.

Can losing an appeal still increase the ban?

Probably won't appeal, the world we live in these days the club would be called racist for appealing this type of charge. Pathetic.
Yep, honestly the FA are worse in this scenario. They charge a player for speaking his own culture, that's more racist imo. Sure he's in England now, but why should that make a difference?

It's difficult because the intention of the rules brought in are obviously there to act against incidents of racism and hate, which I think we all know this wasn't intended to be in anyway. However, given the phrase he used (even taking the context in to account) I'm not sure we could have any complaints if he receives a ban.
Definition of racist:
"prejudiced against or antagonistic toward a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized"

None of that applies to thanking a white guy calling him negrito, not in a million years. I could look up hate for you but doubt it's necessary. It's out of scope.

Club and Cavani have handled this well. We should appeal as a matter of principle. We will probably lose because the FA are morons and they will choose the dates again for maximum impact.

Take it on the chin and move on.

 I'm sure there will be hundreds of examples. In the previous thread someone mentioned a Chinese one I think that sounds very close to the n word but just means "Ahh" or "Errrm" or something

It's a classic case of us imposing our history and culture on others! Here's to diversity!

This is actually cultural racism from FA. They totally disregard the context, they totally disregard that this is a widely used term used in Uruguay, and it's used as a friendly term. Like "bro". I bet Cavani also is called negrito by friends in Uruguay. It's NOT the same as the Evra incident, where Suarez said "because you're negrito", where he clearly claimed that he kicked him because Evra is black.

FA should climb down from their racism-pedestal and take to account that other cultures might have other languages and terms than English. We can't translate everything, word for word, and conclude "this is bad, this is good". I assume Cavani will get a game or two on the sideline, and the FA are some pricks not deciding this while he was injured anyway. This is not how to kick racism out of football. This is just bullshit.

Yes, although that's usually reserved for groundless appeals. You can hardly say that about this case.

Agree with this. I'd like the club to appeal on principle and also show support to their player who is new to the club and country and likely feels very hard done by

I know right.

Sigh, the "target" of the word Cavani addressed to - did the person felt offended? no, instead the person accepted it, likely felt a joy out of it.
What about the Suarez and the recent official to a Istanbul staff(?)? Did the person they referred to get offended? Absolutely yes, they are disgusted by it.

Geez FA is a joke. Then again we know that already.

Sigh... I can't find the right words for the FA in this fiasco. Stupid and ridiculous sound too benign. The great English now have to moderate other languages as well, even when used in camaraderie. I almost don't care anymore. Do your worst FA!

I said the intention wasn't racism or hate so not sure why you're given me definitions, I literally agreed with that. The term is racialised though (I know you're Uruguayan so you know what the translation is and that the phrase goes back to slavery but has subsequently taken on a different meaning) and so it's completely understandable that the FA may punish Cavani although I would also understand if they didn't when taking the context and intent into accont.

Plus I'm not sure about the comments in here about this charge being insensitive to other people's cultures, there are loads of things that are acceptable elsewhere that we don't accept in the UK so how far does that go?

The word he used was 'negro' which means black in Spanish. I think the problem is that it sounds similar to the n word. In Spanish, people regularly refer to their friends as 'the white one'/'black one' and while it sounds awkward in English, it's somewhat innocuous for the most part in Spanish.

That said, the FA felt that they had to act and stamp out this term given the Suarez incident in the past and it's reccurance in an effort to oviate similar incidents in the future.
The word used was 'negrito'

It's against the rules to refer to ethnicity or colour as PL footballer. It doesn't matter what spanish people regularly do.

Just think Cavani could score some important winners for us. He hit the crossbar vs PSG with a delightful chip.

He's very important to us so this is pissing me right off.

Was hoping for a fine but if they ban him that's down to his own stupidity. Don't think United should fight this, not a hill you want to die on for sure.

We should look for widespread support. It’ll never be overturned, I can’t help but feel this timing is done strategically because they know we’d rather accept it and have him miss the next three games, than appeal and risk having him miss the Liverpool game.

Doubt we can decrease from three. Looks to me like either you get the FA to backtrack to nothing (unlikely) or you get three, or more. No halfway house, FA can't call things a "grey area".

We will likely play on and execute based on new injury or best set of games to miss. Either way, get on with it, the last thing you want is this looming large for ages. Focus on the football.

Terrible decision in my opinion. The word itself isn't a slur. Perhaps the Tweet could have remained and people accept and understand the context and use of words from a different culture don't always translate well but that's how the world is and it's not a bad thing. However I can understand how it can be troublesome to have words like "Negrito" enter the lexicon of English speakers since we don't really have a real translation that would be appropriate and it would be very easy for English speakers to take that word and use it in a derogatory way. Still, a 3 game ban for speaking your own language? It's not right.

What happened to "he had to be charged by December 7th"? Was that made up by the press?

Club could have maybe been smarter once they knew Cavani was injured in reaching out to the FA, accepting some form of guilty plea and get him to serve a suspension whilst injured anyway. Sounds as if there is still scope to play him a fair bit and then take a suspension when he needs a rest.

This is just basically saying that you can't speak in other languages over here if it remotely sounds like a racist word. A pathetic concept that we should in no way accept.
It really isn't. It's saying the vernacular/colloquialisms of one country may not be appropriate in another when in a formal position, is that a new concept? In this case using ethnic/racial terms even in a friendly manner doesn't fit in with the FAs conduct rules.

I don't think he should be banned but the fake outrage over this decision is ridiculous. We all know you have to moderate your language in a workplace and its no great imposition to use different terms of affection.

I know you said you understood the context but you lead with "the FA has to deal with incidents of racism or hate"

Which this is neither, bottomline, no ifs and buts.

You have to factor in how the player feelas about it. Don't think Cavani will go into a "why always me?" Suarez/BaloBalo mindset, but doubt he would be happy to summarily accept a racist charge. I sure wouldn't.

In this context I would agree with you yes. However the appeals process does allow for a reduced sentence with a successful appeal.

Honestly isn’t there more important things than this? Oh no Cavani called someone a mate in his native language? Honestly it’s ridiculous he shouldn’t have to modify his own language to satisfy the morons at the FA.

Don't think it will. Anyone who thinks this has racial implications need to take a long hard look at themselves. Absolute joke from the FA.
Has anyone said 'pc gone mad' yet?

Whether you like it or not, in the UK many people find this offensive?

You go around and start calling people Negrito in the UK and see how long it is before some slaps you.

Can be argued that the FA are actually being racist towards Cavani if the words in question are normal and inoffensive in his native language. The context they were used in has been completely overlooked by the FA but this is hardly surprising when you consider just how wholeheartedly engaged in virtue signalling they are towards their BLM fascist chums.

Edit: Just for the record, I believe discrimination is abhorrent in any form, but fascism isn't the answer.

'Wokeness' at the peak of its powers!
Its all about media attention, FA spineless as usual to stand up to anyone.

PS Note to Ole; "please make sure Mason Greenwood is not caught farting in the street, otherwise it will be a 6 match ban for him".

But he wasnt going around the UK calling people Negrito, he was talking to/addressing a friend in Spanish not in the uk?

I just looked at his post and you're right. That's along the lines of saying 'little black one'. It is indeed against the rules which is why the FA are taking action (and I agree with it).
