Has he actually ever had a good season for Spurs? I mean he's been there since 2013 and scores the odd wonder goal now and again but can't recall him ever taking centre stage over a season as all of Eriksen, Alli and Son have done over last 8 years.

He is an excellent squad player who if it wasn't for injuries would be a first team regular. Every squad needs players like him.
Really? I'd have Moura for instance starting over him every single time although Moura himself is probably at his best as impact sub for last 20 minutes as famous Ajax game showed. He was good today though with the attacking restrictions in place.

The Rabona is an odd one, on one hand an impressive piece of skill and body control, but also a bit embarrassing in that it showcases just how one footed a professional is.

The rabona has always been a favourite of the Argies. Di Maria scored one for Benfica, and is generally pulling them off, and Jonathan Calleri scored a worldie for Boca too.

To be fair, I think, if it was just a simple right footed shot/placement into the far corner, it would have been blocked. The actual skill and audacity bought him that half second of doubt as it wasn't closed down as fast i.e it caught Partey flat footed and nutmegged him.

That goal was outrageous. Goal of the season for me. The placement, curl, timing and skill to pull it off within a split second was sensational. Better than his last rabona.
Just look at the constant vitriol in this forum towards him - tons of people in here seem to absolutely hate the guy. You may not notice him but he certainly winds plenty up based on this forum.
I don’t think it was harsh. He could have had 4 or 5 yellow cards up to that point.

It's an interesting one for sure. There's something about obviously very skillful players who don't seem to deliver on their potential which grinds a lot of fan's gears.
He's obviously a cnut, because he plays for Spurs but he does seem to get more hate than most.
Only because of the incident with Martial. And outside of United fans, hardly anyone notices him. He's just another Adel Taarabt, capable of the stupendous from time to time, but shite most of the time.
At the level I played at (very, very low) they were just never, ever effective. All it ever seemed to be was showboating for the sake of it.
There's a reason you dont see many Rabonas at the top level and it's not because the players cant do it, it's because in 99.9% of cases it's not that effective and ends up with a lame, floaty cross that the goalie can take his time catching.
It was a Maradona specialty, so no wonder it’s cemented it’s place in Argentinian culture. It’s not difficult to to a rabona - what’s difficult is to do a good rabona, and Di Maria’sfor Benfica was a marvellous little piece.
I think Lamela’s in the EL was the best of all, although Calleri’s was special too. I like my rabonas with a little height on them!

But the best rabona is always the first time you see it. Mine was Maradona chalking up an assist for Napoli. Flabbergasted, as was the keeper and four defenders.

I don't think it was. Iirc, in the Europa a few years ago he also scored an incredible rabona for Spurs from outside the penalty box. Loved the fact that he ruined it all by getting sent off of course

You seem to be conflating two very different things though. He's a thoroughly unlikeable player much like, for example, John Terry was. On the other hand opposition fans hated seeing Terry on the teamsheet because he was a both a wanker and a formidable player. Most people are happy to see Lamela get so much game time for Spurs because his overall impact on the game is so poor so often. They just don't enjoy watching such wankery.
A good comparison would be when you had Herrera - a player I utterly despised because of how dirty he was but not necessarily one I worried about.
