God of War vs Starcraft. How do you even compare these two...

I really miss old days of Destructoid when not everything was about shilling for Call of Duty just yet.

Settle down, I didn't suggest that Skyrim was a great game, it wasn't even about Skyrim. I was just wondering if people limit their opinion to vanilla versions or if they take into account mods. It's a bit like cars people don't necessairly limit their rankings to factory specs.
What's with the aggressive 'settle down'? I just put down my opinion about a question you asked. Skyrim was just an example.

It wasn't aggressive at all. I should have used a smiley.

Tekken 3.
Metal Gear Solid.
Silent Hill 2.
Phantasy star online.
Oblivion.
Vice city.
Witcher 3.
Socom 2.
The last of us 1.
Fifa.

I only had 1 entry from each franchise.

I consider this lot very strong.

It's all very subjective but GoW and GTAV are not game changers, innovators or even 10 out of 10 games (imo). I find it very hard to believe people would say these are even in the top 30 games of all time even when looking at it objectively. Putting aside your personal feelings, I think impact and how the games resonate is a truer test of greatness on a collective measurement. E.G:

FF7 was seismic for JRPGs in the West.
Dark Souls has been so successful that everyone has wanted to copy the formula and they're still doing it (see the new FF darksouls clone)
Witcher 3 spawned an endless amount of poor imitators regarding its side quests and their outstanding moral ambiguity. Again, the impact is there to see, although it's a shame developers have never really understood why its side quests are so good.

Even if you don't like those 3 games you can't deny the impact. I've never been a huge Zelda fan but it would be impossible for me to argue against some of the entries being labeled as the best because of its incredible influence. The middle GTA games are another example.

When you actually look at the head to heads the vast majority are correct to be fair. It's just an odd system to arrive at the best.

I've just finished GoW and it's a superb game but no where near Witcher 3 and it's DLCs. I guess it's a more general taste as i know some struggle getting into a game like Witcher.

People really like the story but it's greatest sin IMO is that the gameplay just isn't very good. It reminds me a bit of the attempted reboot for DmC and how it deviated from the frenetic style of action that the series was known for. It's a more deliberate game than the older GoTs, but also feels like its just aping popular trends seen in many games of its type (e.g. Tomb Raider), especially with the pseudo-RPG elements adding... not a whole lot. The menu system is also clunky and annoying. It also doesn't have many (any?) good bosses.

My biggest peeve is that it has too much talking with the characters being forced to narrate every 5 seconds. The BOY meme exists for a reason.

Edit - Should probably add that I can see why it's popular. It's well-made technically and has a cracking setting in spite of my issues above.
I don't see how you can say the gameplay is poor. I went into that game knowing nothing about GOW or the previous games and left a huge fan. The combat is incredibly satisfying and that Axe throw alone is up there for one of the most satisfying gameplay attacks in gaming for me. There is no way I would have stuck with the game if it didn't have phenomenal gameplay. The bosses is a fair point but I didn't mind as its clearly very story-driven

I really couldn't get into The Witcher when I played it. I didn't think the combat was good at all, and I also thought there was just too much to do! I know that sounds like a weird complaint, but I found it overwhelming. There were just too many markers on the map for my liking!

I'm going to go against the grain and say I don't think the list is as shocking as being made out. Clearly, there's an awful lot of posters in here much older than me but most of those matchups are fair enough to me. I cant believe RDR2 isn't there as it's a genuine masterpiece. My personal number one would have to be Skyrim just for the sheer amount of content in that game and how much I've gone back to it over the years. GOW is a great game and a 9/10 for me so no great complaints, also for the person above saying GOW brought not innovation, I think you have to look at the level of detail, graphics, motion capture and the one camera view and realise it is a very technically impressive game.

Yeah its an incredible game. The weight of the combat, the characters/writing/story, visuals are all superb for me. It's basically story driven gaming done near perfect with gameplay not sacrificed and merely an uninteresting to get to the next story point. Completely disagree with the notion that it doesn't have an important place in gaming history. A game that good will be talked about for decades. But of course the sequel not being that great could hamper its standing.

Think I will have to replay it. I remember really liking it, but not being blown away necessarily.

It's a crime these are not in it.

I'll add Sonic as well. Those games back in the day were giving Mario a run for his coins. And Sonic is synonymous with that era of gaming.

This.

We should do it better.

We should do one for each generation of gaming. Then the winners battle it out for the ultimate trophy.

Can even do One for Indie games.
You set it all up and I will supervise

You could do individual threads with a poll in each one

I would love to mate but i think it needs to be handled by someone who has more gaming knowledge.

I only played SNES, PS1, N64, PS2 and Switch hardcore.

I've never even touched games like Skyrim so my list wouldn't be accurate (after PS2, I solely played football and fighting games).

But someone should do this. Would be mega fun.

For it to truly encapsulate all generations we need the involvement of someone really, really old who has lived and breathed games, playing a wide range and knowing what makes a good one with them having had a role in the industry.

@Redlambs

I've got no problems setting up polls when it comes to the time but the format, seeding and all that jazz is best left to a true professional.

Will keep an eye out of it happens. Then let's spam it over to IGN Twitter account and show them how stupid their version was.

No Tekken 3... Get the feck out of here :houllier:
