Meanwhile, the poster Sweet Square posts about exaggerations after the defeat yesterday.

I think Maguire's PR team needs to scale down payments to astroturfers.. no amount of astroturfing saves poor play.

I know he was unfit, but on the first one didnt realise he looks away while the ball is travelling to him, really poor that. Been caught out earlier this season aswell when he was fit

The mistakes he made at some of the goals cannot be blamed on fitness imo. Look at the video posted how he acted at the last goal. Or the giveaway at the first goal. Has nothing to do with fitness. It’s simply very bad form atm. Our defence was poor also when he played with Varane, just that they mainly played middle to lower table teams.
Of course it does. For the whole game he quite clearly wasn't moving as well as he normally would if he was fully fit, and so his movements were either not natural or non-existent.

Literally all 4 goals came about due to him not moving - if he was moving freely he may well naturally take a those two steps towards the ball for the first goal, or just move at all four the 4th.

On top of that, when you're not fit and you know you're not fit you're mentally not all there either. as not only are you trying to concentrate on the game, you're also concentrating on preserving yourself /not getting injured, which will lead to you not playing your natural game.

Eh, no. He’s made himself available when Varane is out despite not being 100% fit. That shows a ridiculous amount of commitment. The blame lies squarely with Solskjaer for picking a player that had only started training on grass 24 hours before the game.
Not only that, but I think it's fairly evident at this point that Ole expects his players to make themselves fit even when they're not... And that expectation may well have played on Maguires mind.

I’m sad to inform that he doesn’t move much better when fully fit. He’s being doing these things the whole season, not just after the injury. He has lost the ball like at the first goal, losing his man, switching off, being dribbled, etc it’s just that previous teams have not been good enough to fully take advantage of it.
I don’t see how the defending at the fourth goal, (see quoted post below) came from immobility after injury. It’s simply poor defending.

Many moments this season where he's been a proper disaster class.

I still can't believe he's the most expensive CB in history.

Ive said it for the past 4 games to my friends in real life, lindelof and varane should be the main two. Maguire is only there because of a) his cost and b) where he happened to be born.

He has been making mistakes that have caused us to concede goals and chances all season long.
He did this last season, too, but we blamed it on pre-season.

I sense a pattern.

And point A is directly related to point B.

I completely agree Ole should not have played Maguire, but Maguire himself should have told the manager he was not physically or mentally fit. He was in no way sharp seeing the danger or reacting to the danger.

Everyone would have understood Maguire not being in the squad, but both Ole and Maguire were too stubborn to acknowledge that in his condition he was a liability.

No player will say that. A manager has to make the decision depending on what his medical staff say and what his own assessment of an individual player's conditon/mentality is.

When either Rio or Vidic were injured, SAF had no qualms about throwing Smalling or Jones in there and the team won anyway. Those players are NOT any better than Lindelof of Bailey. One of the reasons Ole is such a poor manager is because he doesn't show his squad players that he trust them. Let's not forget that, in a long, hard season, it is always the squad that wins you the league, and not your world-class starting 11 alone.

Ole starting Maguire against Leicester and his continued misuse of talented players like VdB and Sancho should be unacceptable at a club like United.

I think even Phil Jones can do better than Maguire. At least, Phil Jones is willing to dive and head to save any ball.

Ole should also have taken him off, it's a catalogue of errors, clearly not fit, playing like a boxer that has just got up from a knockdown. Ole can't see he should not be playing before the match and then even worse can't see how he's literally a tree trunk out there. We may have had a chance to salvage the game with him subbed.

I remember when Bailly started against Newcastle under Jose, there was something very wrong with him at the time and just stood around and watched the goals go in. Don't know if he was ill or just not ready, Jose took him off after 20 mins and came back to win 3-2. At least Jose saw what was happening and corrected, Ole I don't think can or just had blind hope he will start playing better any minute. He was a calamity all game and should've been off.

You can criticise Maguire for a fair few things, but when it comes to defending set-pieces he's usually one of the few in our team that is proactive in trying to actually do something.

Fact is, it's not normal for Maguire - or any player in fact - to be directly at fault for all 4 goals conceded... so to think thats not in large part due to him not being fit is a bit off.

His performance is on the manager. Beyond stupid to bring him back with next to no time in training.

He wasn't sharp, but don't see how that had anything to do with fitness. His performance as a whole would probably been better if he been more fit, but many of the mistakes and decisions were not becasue of being unfit.

I agree that he is often our best player when it comes to defend at setpieces. But I still don't think his action at that setpiece goal had anything to do with not being fully fit. As I wrote above, I believe his performance as a whole would've been better if fully fit, but that is not the main problem with him right now. He's been performing well below his normal standard for several matches now. He has given away the ball or made other mistakes, but the opposition haven't had the quality to fully explore that until now. I think he has taken a step back when it comes to passing as well. His long balls out to Shaw are still accurate, but he has slowed down on his passing and rarely make one touch passes. The speed of passing was an improvement immediately seen when Varane and Lindelof paired.

I am personally a big fan of Maguire and though he was excellent last season. But as plays now, and also looking back with a little more critical eyes, I have started to mistrust my own judgement.

I never rated him at Leicester, I don't rate him here and, most importantly, I don't rate him as captain. I listened to 2-3 of his interviews and my head nearly exploded.

He ain't a bad player, just not a 90 mil one. Other than heading, there isn't a single attribute he's better at than Lindelof, and that's sad.

Rushed back is just an excuse. He has been awful this season even before his injury. Does not deserve to play over Lindelof but "captain" status will get him games. Has made casual mistakes in every game this season.

We have bought poorly in last decade.

He gets exposed way too often, he can’t play at the top level unless he plays in a 5 back

I'm not having the Maguire is shite claim here. He was unfit and got exposed. Harry is a very good CB, definitely nowhere near the class of Vidic or Rio but well into the top tier of CBs in the PL.

If there is any lingering doubt about Harry's fitness going into tomorrow's match Ole must bench him and give us some kind of chance against Liverpool this weekend. Bailly scares the crap out of me but he's next in line, if he's fit. And if not Bailly, then Jones.

What did fitness have to do with the first goal?

He stood and waited, waited, waited, waited for the ball to roll to him. If he takes one step towards the ball, it doesn't happen.

That's shit defending and brainlessness, not poor fitness.

He has been shite all season though, does that mean he hasnt been fit this whole season? His earlier mistakes just didnt get punished. Leicester did punish his mistake.

I think Maguire's price tag should not be held against him. Being the most expensive CB in history is irrelevant other than it speaks to the level of our desperation at the time we signed him. However, Maguire's form hasn't dropped dramatically since Leicester; I think the Foxes' midfield offered better protection and so he wasn't as exposed there as he is at United. He's an above average defender but not a great one. I've read people saying Maguire is among the top 3 CBs in the PL, and I find that laughable. There's no reason to pile on Maguire; he's an above average player that people are expecting to be world class because he was expensive. Against Leicester He was a disaster. His mobility, pace, and how he first addresses an attacker (body position, how he's going to try to move the player) has always been suspect/deficient, and playing injured just magnified it 1000x.

Rooney was shite for long stretches (quite often, actually), before hitting form again. But it didn't therefore follow that Rooney was shite as a footballer.

Footballers are quite often form, as Bruno was last season. It's part of the human experience to not always be at peak. Maguire had been off peak before Leicester City, but against Leicester City he redefined dire. There's a very good chance, to put it mildly, that his fitness had a lot to do with it. But to be clear, I blame Maguire as much as Ole for putting this boots on -- if you're not fit you need to own up to it and insist that you're not fit to play.

When he's not fit, his base level is really low. We saw it at the start of last season, and we're seeing it now.

Generally he's a strong influence for us though. Just a shame his bottom level is happening when everyone else is all at sea too.

Claiming they got cheered and clapped off at half time? Did he have his headphones in already?
