Wonder if he needs to see a sports pshycologist. This is nowhere near the same player from last season. He's managed to become a Benny Hill version of himself. The amount of enormous personal mistakes is frustrating.

Its just made worse by the obvious fact that the captain needs to be someone who's nearly beyond reproach. He can't command the field when he himself is getting told off by Varane during games, and especially someone like Ronaldo.

I can't actually find any example of a Premier League captain being stripped of the armband during a season. Ferguson replaced Neville as captain in 2005, but only becuse the player was injured too often and he needed consistency.

The only realistic alterantive we have for a longevity captain is most likely going to be Bruno. Ronaldo probably respects Bruno enough to listen to him, somewhat. Alternative shoutout to Champions League Varane, but he's been here too short a time to be considered

Ole won’t drop his most loyal supporter.

Will probably stay for a while under a new manager, but will lose the captaincy.

I actually think I wouldn't have as much problem with him if he wasn't our captain. The fact that he came in, got the armband without any reason and suddenly he's our captain was a ridiculous decision by our godawful manager.

He's by far the worst captain I have seen for United in my life time. Believe me I actually think Ashley Young was a better captain.

Him & Shaw been shocking. Most of the goals we conceded ever since our poor form started actually came from their sides. They became much clumsier, lazy, and easily losing their man. 352 is just not working, Ole doesn’t know how to use it. Stick with 4231 but They both need to be dropped when Varane is back.

It was a joke he was made captain right away.

He's under serious jeopardy of getting shipped off if we get the right manager in.

I've had enough of him. He has been appalling on borderline criminal levels all season.

Has there ever been any precedent for a Captain being replaced mid season? Or at all end the end of a season?

Steven Gerard replaced Sami Hyypia as captain during the season. It appears that the responsibility was impacting Hyypia’s performances. I don’t know if that is the case for Maguire but he’s often been a calamity for much of his time here so I think the same action would be warranted

Houllier hinted that the captaincy was affecting defender Hyypia's game and wanted Gerrard to lead Liverpool into the future.

Problem is Maquire doesn't seem to deal with pressure/ scrutiny very well; incident in Greece definitely affected him general poor form over the last year he seems to shrink into a shell. Taking drastic action like that might completely ruin him, but then again (one of Oles favourite phrases) ruthless action like this could go e a good kick up the backsides of other in the team. Don't see him being stripped any time soon.

Old Harry got his account manager to post on Instagram again this morning. We feel your pain we are working hard. How about you just feck off Maguire. You are not even better than the average cb's we have had like Smalling, Evans never mind comparing you to our best like Rio, Stam and Vidic. Hopeless player, pussy of a personality and 80m down the drain
Agree his patronising message, I'm fecking fed up with we will do better, just don't say feck all. Even if you are fecking worlds best for 1 game. Stam was better on 1 leg than this git.

I've thought Harry has been good for us generally. My 1 criticism of him has been he isn't great at distribution, tends to give the ball away a bit too easily BUT he's a solid if not very good defender that also WINS EVERYTHING in the air. Until recently, now he's made some poor decisions and has allowed the ball to stay in play too long in dangerous spots. Usually if you have a lights out winner of balls in the air, it helps your defense avoid fluky goals. He's taken a step back, misjudging and indecision. He's on a poor patch at the moment and i hate to see it. Hopefully he'll find his mojo!

The Captain of Manchester United, his biggest honour is being Hull’s player of the year.

Could you put together a "highlight" package like this for any other defender for a top 10 side? And this doesn't even include this season's multiple cock-ups.

He is a fecking disgrace, to be honest.

Must be the season, here's one fresh from today.

Titanic of a defender. Super rush, clumsy, slow. If Nesta next to you keeps you calm and collected, Maguire makes you feel nervous and anxious.

That second one is a classic. Shaw tries to defend and Maguire pulls him back making him lose balance. He has the more than average physical attributes, but he is almost brain fecked footballer.

But, but, ‘He’s been great before this season.’ No, he really hasn’t.

it looks so bad especially as he hasn't been here long. I typed in VVD comical defending and I get titles like "famous players destroyed by Van Dijk," Van Dijk dominating great players" "50 players humiliated by Van Dijk"

Has there ever been a United player that cracked under pressure more than Maguire?

He gets into panic mode very easily and at that point, I'm not sure even he knows what he's doing.

They won't,but get rid now and get Pau Torres(if available) along side Varane.

Just not good enough to make it at United I'm afraid. Can't handle the spot light.

Manchester United captain?? :nono:

He just looks so stupid standing still after his mistakes as the opponent gets an easy goal. I get this is YT highlights and you can make anybody look world-class/garbage with some selective editing over a bunch of games, but my god he doesn't look inspiring there as a United captain, or CB full stop.

honestly I don't remember him being this bad before. This season, he just looked sluggish and resigned. I honestly suspect it is due to injuries and being rushed back too soon.

pretty much. And the large additional sums needed to compensate for his lack of solving defensive issues. I question his defensive leadership
He has zero leadership skills. He wasn't even famous for being a leader. Ole put the icing on top by making him the team captain as well.

Embarrassing celebration vs Albania.

Putting his hands to his ears as if he hasn't been an absolute shambles at United and doesn't deserve the criticism. Our captain ffs.

He’s with England today not United. His place has been for them has been scrutinised yet Kane who has been just as awful this season and Sterling who can’t get in the City team are never questioned.

It's rare that you see an entire punditry team in agreement, but they all hammered Maguire for his celebration.

The celebration itself was so weird that it was actually pretty funny. Walking shambles all season, preside over the club's longest run without a clean sheet at home in 142 years, 1 win in nearly 2 months, 15 goals conceded in the last 5 games, humiliated by our 2 biggest rivals...but you scored an unmarked header against fecking Albania, time to shove it down the peasants throats.

We have so many piss takers at the club, but our 'captain' is definitely the biggest.

Roy Keane: "[He] puts his hands up to his ears. He's like 'shutting the critics up'. I think It's embarrassing. He's been a disgrace the last few months for #mufc. He thinks if he scores there, he's going to shut his critics up. Embarrassing."

Pundit's reaction:

Was an unecessary celebration to be honest. Given we've been played off the park in our last 3 premier league games, the only responses to criticism these players should be sending should be on the pitch, in a United shirt.

Oh feck off. Guys been criticised to hell all season, scores with England and does a daft celebration for all of 5 seconds. Who cares. The commentary team jumping all over him is pathetic….what do they want, a public apology for a celebration

Nice goal but that celebration is the most annoying one in football right now.

Grealish was doing it at the start of the season too. It's like these little flowers can't take any criticism even if they deserve it
