As reasonable as these isolated footballing opinions are, they have nothing to do with me disapproving of how Bruno looks after the ball, which is ultimately the purpose of this random debate. These views are no more valid than a view that Bruno could keep the ball better. I don’t even want to do the whole ‘I praised him too’ thing, because why should I have to, it’s there for all to see, but I included the things I like about Bruno in the very post that started this debate, but my voicing of the things I don’t was somehow greeted with some sort of cynicism.

Ultimately, having assessed the player over 100 games, I’ve always said that I feel Bruno is the 10 the team needed at the time when he joined, but it quickly became clear to me that he will not be the 10 that the team needs to become the best team in the league/Europe. He’s great for an Ole team, but an Ole team isn’t good enough. We likely would control football matches better with a Pep or a Klopp, but having watched Bruno - it is at that point where I feel that it will become more apparent that he isn’t what we need. He simply doesn’t have the skill set from what I’ve seen. I don’t expect him to become David Silva once we get Pep. I’d expect him to be replaced by David Silva once we get Pep. We can say that a certain type of manager can implement controlling football, but they do that with footballers that suit it. The coaches that have reputations for controlling midfields would prefer a Bernardo Silva to Bruno Fernandes is just my opinion. Not a particularly outrageous one either, if just looked at for what it is.

I don’t dislike the guy. But I also don’t think he’s as good as you do. Which I am not being sneaky or indirect about. I’m stating it directly at face value and explaining exactly why, as I have done for two years. There’s nothing more to what I write than what I write.
When we had Van Gaal as manager, we dominated City which had midfield of Fernandinho, KdB, David Silva, Yaya Toure, Sterling (combination of them played) and we had midfield of Herrera, Fellaini along with Carrick. The same Fernandinho, KdB, David Silva midfield dominated every midfield in the league just a year later or at stretch 2 (even in 2016-17 they dominated every game), did we lose our ability to control the game starting from 2016 or did City midfielders magically for that ability?

Answer is one significant change, that's manager. Maybe we have different level of expectations on manager and their ability to control game, for me he is the single most important person who controls the game. We hired Jose and they hired Pep, one manager who just dominates every game and other manager who believed team with possession makes mistakes.

Finally dropped. Brilliant player but needs a kick up the backside, him and Rashford were never going to be dropped by Ole.

Big decision though.

Best I’ve seen in a long while. Really enjoyed his game, we had a proper midfield 3, a lot of his passes were 3-5 yards and his nearest teammate was always close to him. From that base, he did what he does and created chances but most importantly the team had a shape and structure which he didn’t disrupt and he also played a lot of simple passes. Loved it.

And, both changed the game.

Not that I don't agree with resting them once in awhile unlike the past 2-3 seasons.

I think dropping him was the right call to help us have a more disciplined midfield to build confidence and a platform to win the game. He showed his class when he came on though and we looked really dangerous.

Top task for new manager is to mould Bruno into the best player he can be.

His best performance all season. i dont think he misplaced one pass. benching him must have rattled him. hopefully no more erratic passes from him now that he knows he isnt untouchable.

Almost cost us this decision if Villarreal were more clinical.

Yeah I'm not worried about him when we change managers. Ole had him playing as a 2nd striker and told him to just force feed Ronaldo/the striker imo. Get a coach who tells him to play with control and he'll do it no problem.

Was that an assist or a miscontrolled pass for Sancho’s goal?

Looked so different when he came on. Disciplined and looked after the ball. Picked his passes at the right time and not constantly losing possession. Also played in the right areas for once!

I've been very critical of him lately but that was a great performance off the bench. More of the same please. He had a good balance between simple and daring decisions and it was great to watch.

He IS untouchable in this squad.

The manager needed to give him a better and more suitable instructions like keeping the ball at certain times and movements around.

Looked pissed off at being left out and based on his impact after coming on, rightly so. He's been dodgy during this rough patch (hardly alone in that respect) but his quality is clear for those that want to see it.

Made all the difference in the world. Completely unlocked Sancho.

He's still our best player on paper, together with Ronaldo.

He's simply unbelievable. A smart coach will set up a system that will give him time on the ball. I hate how he finds himself in the most tight places because of other players lacking positioning.

Changed the game when he came on.

Some of you need to be embarrassed with yourselves.
No, I'm pretty sure he just played miles better than he has recently. That was Bruno's best performance in a while for us even without the assist, and it's because he didn't sit next to Ronaldo as a pseudo forward and go for potshots and hero passes constantly. Imposed some control on the game instead and with him we dominated the final half hour of the game. Brilliant to see

I've been very critical of Bruno while under Ole. However, his support of the midfield today was brilliant, today he actually played as part of the midfield linking up play instead of a second striker. He was also clever with when he tried the killer pass and when to go for the safe option, hopefully it continues because when Bruno plays this way we're at our best.

I'm talking about the posters who keep suggesting he's not a good player and wouldn't get into any other top team.

Hopefully that kick up the arse has had the required effect. Proper performance from him today. Now the task for Bruno is to find some consistency.

Disclaimer: Body language post despite having no discernible experience in this field.

I felt his body language was a bit off today, looked sulky when he came on. He didn't even celebrate when Sancho scored.

Its good that he was playing more as a midfielder, keeping possesion, and always offered himself as a passing option and had players near him for a pass.

KDB-esque performance. Promising.

He should be played in a deeper role like he was today and he can be a much better player when he isn't trying a Hollywood pass/flick every time. A version of Bruno that can retain possession and pick the right moments to make key passes (like he did tonight) would be much better for the team imo.
