Sky reading it out now. Essentially, the FIA have said that Masi can do what he wants. Genuinely. That’s their ruling.
Mental isn't it!

Why have rules of the racing director can just do what he wants.

My Mrs asked me to explain the controversy in football terms. Best I can come up with...

"A team is leading a final 2-0 and a injury takes place. The referee restarts the game with 1 minute to go, changes the score to 2-2 and says it restarts with the team that was losing having a penalty..."

What happened today wasn't sport.

I think there's been mistakes throughout the season.
It all came down to this, so obviously it will be heavily talked about, but you could argue many of the rules are a bit iffy.
Some have benefited Hamilton this season
I can’t remember one where they broke their own rules to allow one driver, on a fresh set of the fastest tyres to have a lap directly behind another driver on an old set of the slowest tyres, but there we go

disgrace, joke, disturbing...my mind is full of mixed emotions but Lewis deserved this win today, and the title.

To go down to the last race of the season, for both to race cleanly-ish and fairly only for the FIA to feck it up and give it to the wrong person is beyond me.

Times like this make me hate sport

That won’t hold up in court. It’s a professional sport, there are careers and a feck tonne of money at stake.

Rules and regulations are there for a reason and Mercedes based their tactics on those rules. You can’t just change it because you want to and expect people to accept that.

I would hope anyone with any sense of fairness would find randomly deciding to change the rules in the last few laps of a title deciding last race is pretty gross.

Absolutely no integrity.
There's many in this thread who don't know that dirty word.

Apparently they consider themselves "racing fans" who want entertainment at all costs. Fair fecks, but at least admit it's because your favourite won and you have no issue with rules being changed to suit the sky sports generation

Everybody not following Lewis disagree's with this.

It's Damon 94 all over again

Salty english fans and everybody else lapping it up
Are you suggesting that it is only English fans who support Hamilton. And of course not all of them.
His appeal is global.

Fair play to Max.
Quality driver and fantastic to watch.
Happy for him in a bitter/begrudging sort of way.
Not the way we wanted it to end and pretty disappointed with the outcome of the appeal.
Next year Lewis!:cool::cool:

Don't worry, Hamilton supporters. There's no doubt the big man will come back in 2022 stronger than ever. This will only motivate him to push himself further.

Max is the official champ (deserved or not) but the king will rise again.

Feet up at home.
Imagine if this had affected the constructors championship? That would 100% go all the way to CAS for the money involved.

There's a high possibility of skullduggery this weekend. Max is supposed to be the future of F1 and his failure to beat the geriatric version of Lewis in a faster car will seriously undermine any future attempts to hype him up as a superstar, especially given he's such a sour and charmless character. I've got a feeling the brand will have to win above all else.
It was written. The dark hand has anointed the successor.

Behind the right goal post as "Whiteside shoots!"
Come on they're taking the piss now, Red Bull.

"Any cars ... " (that have been overtaken) doesn't mean ALL cars? Of course it does or it would say "some" or "whatever the Race Director" says on the day.

Then to add the Race Director has the power to ignore written rules... WHY would an independent Race Director want to ignore the rules and say "yeah but I'm allowed to"?

It's CAS and I'm not sure how they'll go t.b.h

This leaves a bad taste, it was a total cock up by Masi, he handed Max the WC,
but it is what it it,
Well Done Max, first WC is always the hardest one to win.
It was an incredible season, the season we always wanted.
Lewis will be back next season wanting his WC back and he will be fighting hard, new regs , new cars, hoping it will be another classic season
Horner has been an utter arse this season , Toto not that far behind.
A big IF, but if their cars are comparably matched again I wonder if Lewis will drive differently starting the first race of the season? I think he needs to put a stop to Max doing late dives and sticking his nose in on corners.

Seems like they do, every fecking game!
Yep.

Only they can't change rules to suit. This was a rule change with a minute to go. It's why F1 isn't a real sport. The sad thing is, if entertainment was all they cared about over integrity, why is it so fecking boring 99% of the time? They need to get their shit together!

Karma is a massive bitch

Two titles Lewis threw away from winnable positions in his career. He really should have 9 :lol:

Mercedes feck themselves by not pitting Lewis twice and try to blame everybody else for their feckery. I hope this breaks Toto
Michael please  please Michael!

In a perfect world theyd make them team mates next year and let them fight it out in the same car. Who wouldn't want to see that.

It was glorious wasn't it  What an end to an epic season.
We all thought it came down to the last race, who'd have thought it'd be the last lap

Well with the new regulations next year is up in the air. Lewis is a better person than me because I would 100% walk away from the sport if I lost a world championship under those circumstances. F1 drivers are incredible and no driver on the grid deserves to lose a world title like that.

HELLO
As a complete neutral with no interest in F1 who tuned in today for the occasion, i appreciate that my opinion means next to nothing.

But...racing is a fairly straightforward concept and it seemed like a complete farce from the outside looking in.

Come on man surely with 17k posts you can do better than trolling…
This thread is like reading the RAWK thread when we won the CL in 08. You can actually see where all the salty Ham fans lose their collective shit when they realise that Ham and Merc have fecked it.

fecking glorious

And on top of that Toto pleading like a prison bitch on the Radio on that last lap. My god, stick it in my veins!!!

You must not have watched Dutch referee Bas Nijhuis. He has a completely unique set of rules.

Isn't that already the case under the guise of there being actual consistent rules? F1 just did the same thing as well.
You think a referee being terrible at getting a decision right is the same as one actually changing a rule to suit tv audiences, the media and sponsors?

I mean, come on. He's allowed to change rules based on what he thinks at the time, apparently, is that a thing in football or any other sport?

Is there an ELI5 post in here breaking all this down?
Random car (Latifi) crashes. Safety car comes out for safety purposes. Safety car means all cars are grouped together. This takes away the lead Hamilton had built up. That happens quite often. As it happens, the guy in second (Verstappen) pitted for fresh tires, which means he has more grip, can go faster. Car in lead (Hamilton) had old tires too, but chose not to pit. Then shortly before the end the race director let's all the cars between 1 & 2 (all were one lap behind) unlap themselves so they wouldn't interfere with the race for the win once the safety car pitted and racing could resume.

That's controversial because usually either all cars or no cars are allowed to unlap themselves before racing. Mercedes say that's the rules, Red Bull says that's not what the rules say. Race director states all teams have agreed in the past that it was highly desirable for the race to end in a 'green' condition' rather than behind a safety car. Letting all cars go past would likely have led to another lap behind the safety car, and there was only that one lap left.

Extra frustration from everyone because the race win also means the championship win.

Yes, it was only the English fans in Abu Dhabi cheering on Hamilton. That's exactly what I am saying. Although I guess they didn't get to cheer too long.
