They really havent.
When has Mata ever been an important player, not likeable but important? He hasn’t. He could be injured, even in his early days it wouldn’t matter. The other four players have all been important members of the first 11 most of their time here. Mata’s been a nice guy. Played well today on his farewell to be fair. Goodbye to 9 years of nothing.

I can’t believe you didn’t ever build a side around him.

Give him his flowers. In the same league of David Silva but because of our poor run he won’t get his flowers.

My MOTM tonight. Showed Bruno what a #10 is supposed to do. No idea why Mata has played out wide so much when he has played. He's so smart with and without the ball and his first tough is ridiculously good. The little pass and move is always on with him and he's constantly on the move. People over rate pace so much. I will take smart movement over pace any day of the week...

Important enough to get his own banner - The Special Juan

Decent performance. Let’s not get too carried away though; tonight was hardly full tilt against a team delighted to have achieved their target of 40 points. A bit of a cameo and a great professional for us but still retained at the club at least two seasons too long.

He's class, both in footballing and human terms. Shame it didn't really work out like we'd have wanted it to here but a good servant and a great career.

Recengtly been annoyed seeign Mata come on when we know he is leaving at the detriment of some youngsters such as Hannibal.

Was happy to see him get a send off tonight though and he was quality. Was neverf a fan of us signing Mata at the time, despite how fantastic he was for Chelsea....we had Rooney and Mata is a number 10 not a wide player. That wasnt his fault, but he was a club record signing we didnt need. Ironic that his last game at Old Trafford was in the very position we havent utilised him in the vast majority of his time here.

Model pro, great personality and servant to the club, still the wrong signing at the time though, wish him well

Clueless post
One of the best no.10s at chelsea, we sign him in his prime and play him on the wing! He w
Has the worst attributes for that position
We all owe him apology for wasting his career

He played 98 games as AM and has massively better stats as RW

We really wasted a big chunk of his career.

I was so excited when we signed Mata, he was brilliant at Chelsea. Easy to forget that after 7 years of the club stumping around with no coherent plan.

Has there been ever a player who has been massively misused. Man the guy has been warming bench for ages for us now.

Will be a great free signing for a mid table La Liga side.
Honestly, with the scale of rebuild we're looking at - a RW, backup striker, FB, CM, maybe even a CB - I really wouldn't be against the idea of him staying on for another year as backup. And this time play him against certain sides against whom you are expecting him to do well

He would be fine as backup for another year, he generally plays well when coming on and offers something different against low block teams. It seems pretty much nailed on that he is leaving though.

He was super limited physically pretty early in his career here and we always had Rooney while Mata was still in somewhat of his prime.

We never really got to see the quicker Chelsea version.

Although I will say he showed fans that yes you can be a 10 and create without losing possession 30 times in one game.

Well he would if he's played a lot more games at RW - how many did he play at LW? Less than RW, and a left footed player? Says it all.

Great performance and we should've utilised him to a far greater degree than we ever did but he's got to go.

I don't think he's been misused at all. He's been a good servant for us and a regular in the first team right up until the last two or so years, when his legs are gone. He's been never consistently good enough to nail down a spot as our 10 but his intelligence meant that he was always useful off the bench or on the right.

Are you suggesting we should have played Mata at left wing because he is left footed?

He only played 30 odd games more but his stats are significantly better from RW. He’s just not been good enough in either position to be a regular.

We got him when he was very much in his prime. What a shame the last 8 years has been.

Why did he get so little playtime this past year? Clearly still a pretty good player compared to the likes of some who got plenty of game time

Whenever Mata plays he gives his all. Showed it the other night, and tonight. I might agree with you if we had a team that did the same, but we haven't - we've indulged players who have spent the season looking either like they coudn't be arsed, or like they didn't have a clue

Not because he's left footed, no, but not a physical player so able to get a cross in right off rather than needing to cut in. His right foot isn't bad though

Cutting in and linking play is one of his best qualities.
