Im pointing out that you can’t blame the manager. The club have been doing this to many managers. That is clear to see
I am pointing out that having only one CM target (free one does not count here) has to be on the manager as well because we went ahead and spent 50m on an CB. Money was there.

He got hooked at HT.

It's one of the worst signings ever purely because we massively overpaid for him, and it shouldn't have been a priority position for the team. If it weren't for the latter, it'd just be a poor signing we overpaid for. It's criminal when the rest of the team needed surgery
We dont know the reason he got subbed, maybe it was to protect him?

Stastically he was fine, it was purely that 3rd goal where he could have done better.

I don't remember Toney 'bullying' him once like people said he would.

Only 1? You know this for a fact?
We signed Eriksen by the way.

Yeah its the height agenda, its still his mistake but people are so ready to blame it on the height that they can't see something basic like that if a player twice his size did the exact same things he did there it would be the same result because he doesnt know where the ball is and doesnt properly challenge for it, which is the mistake.

You could argue that because of his stature he has to think harder about such scenarios that would come instinctively to a taller player

Not that this was one of those scenarios necessarily... But still.

Absolute joke of a post.

Blind was 5ft 11 and an extremely intelligent footballer. He was also stronger than Martinez. He Bossed Lukaku with ease.
Van Gaal also had his system drilled into our squad to perfection and Blind suited it perfectly.

Based on Ajax Blind is no stronger and if anything Martinez is the more aggressive stronger competitor. He's just new to the league and settling in. Blind was playing midfield when he was doing that

Writing him off too soon. It doesn't matter who we sign at this stage - it will be terrible and won't work out until we get other issues fixed.

Only 1? You know this for a fact?
We signed Eriksen by the way.
I said free one does not count? And, if ETH thought about playing Eriksen in deep area, he needed to learn a lot. Oh wait.

I know for a fact because nothing moved on that area until a few days ago which is late already. As I said, money was there to sign someone when we did with Martinez.

We are constantly going to be weak on set pieces again this season. We would probably be able to get away with Martinez’s lack of height and physical presence if we had other players in the team who could help on set pieces. But having just Maguire who can defend a set piece is going to be difficult.

The worst thing He could ever do was coming to Utd. The club is an oven right now. He got subbed for mistkaes the keeper and maguire did

I feel sad for him, he would be very good on any team bar Utd. Don't have a proper DM, and play alongside the most horrible CB I've seen in my life, along with the worst version of DDG who scores on his own.

It's the height. To cover for Blind, ultimately that team never left the pass between defensive players phase. Spending to much time to cover player's flaw and it goes nowhere because the ones with ability to cover for those flaw have their own flaws.

Blind didn't cost 50mil too. Why you sign someone with much of this window budget to add to the woe?
He can't comprehend really.

I’m not going to write him off so soon, but he’s a long way off being a defender in this league. He looks a good footballer but he’s getting bullied by the opposition and it can’t happen as a central defender. It is a huge Achilles heal in this league to be a small CB.

It is worth noting that Blind was a relatively successful CB for the club and he was very short. He did however have Smalling, Carrick and Felaini around him which does reinforce our demand for a stronger midfield.

If you're short you have to be physically outstanding in other ways, either in your leap or have pace to burn. Doesn't look to have either.

I’m sure Martinez has his positive traits, but the sheer naivety of a manager who signs a short, weak, and most pertinently slow CB — to play in a defence that hasn’t had a midfield properly protect them in over 5 years and a GK who hasn’t left his 6 yard box in even longer is just stark raving bonkers.

Playing a high line with the slowest CB I’ve seen at United and his partner being the shortest CB I’ve ever seen at United? It’s masochism.

Exactly the kind of signing where a strong DoF would step in and stop it happening, for the obvious reasons.

Did he actually lose any physical duels? I know he slipped on the line for the third but I don't remember it happening despite the commentators saying it was going to happen at any moment for the entire first half.

Maybe I'm blind or dishonest but I don't think that he was an issue individually, he misjudged the ball on the third goal but otherwise he seemed to be the one defender getting at the end of crosses and clearing danger. The issue is that he is targetted and has to often be involved in duels which means that the players around him need to cover behind him. Shaw next to him was abysmal, once again.

Blind was very good for us at CB
He started at DM for us, before playing LB and after adapting to the league eventually CB with protection form the likes of Carrick, Fellaini etc.

Dropping Martinez straight in at CB in the PL was madness. I can only assume an injury to Lindelof forced it.

Thomas Frank saying they deliberately targeted Martinez with high balls because they knew that they would more than likely win it, and because of how much success Brighton had.

Hooked at half time as a result.

Jesus.....

Got pelters for suggesting it was a pointless signing, I said he'd be exposed but people were clamouring for him.

There you go. It's a DM we need. Varane and Maguire would be a good defensive pairing with a Fabinho, Casemiro, Rodri etc in front of them. We wasted £50m for absolutely no reason.

Feel like there's been a domino effect with the Martinez signing, couldn't get ETH's first choice in Timber, couldn't get ETH's main target full stop in FDJ, wouldn't pay the money for Antony and thus viewed Martinez as a face saving signing

Not a chance we sign Martinez if we'd of signed those 3 players I just mentioned

He wasn't even our first pick of Ajax center backs....the other lad turned us down.

You don’t know for a fact what ETH has asked the club for is the point. What the club do is another story

And our alternative for Shaw? (who has never been good at the aerial/positional side of the game anyway) it’s a 5ft6 LB. Martinez + Shaw/Malacia will be targeted by every single side with a striker/wide forward who has a bit of tenacity and physicality about them aerially. So basically 70% of the league.

Like @2cents says - it’s the type of signing the club would veto if we had the right people in place and weren’t buying players solely on the managers request. They’d find alternatives without such glaring issues to their game with similar sorts of positive profiles.

Injury to Varane…

Yep.

This whole singing, from start to finish, was a huge red flag. And that’s before we even take into consideration the absolutely ridiculous price. It screamed of a manager who was massively underestimating the pace & physicality of the PL.

He’s going to be targeted all season long. I seriously hope for his & Eriks sake he can play in midfield cos he sure as hell isn’t going to be successful centre back in the Premier League.

The fact we’ve spent £55 million on him when we needed a rebuild, on a limited budget, is just batshit mental beyond belief.

Exactly the kind of signing where a strong DoF would step in and stop it happening, for the obvious reasons.
Yep there’s a reason why he is the shortest CB in the premier league. A proper DOF knows you need horses for courses.

Like I said, if ETH had been a manager for at least one year in the premier league, he never buys Martinez.

He’s comfortable on the ball but that’s about it. Shouldn’t be starting for now

His ground duels were pretty good if I remember correctly. But playing him in this team is really a disadvantage for us at this moment especially if we want to play highline. Tactically, it is suicidal to play slow CBs if we also want to put FBs too high and no proper defensive midfielder to help out ahead of them.
