Almost impossible to get back into the team now. Like Ronaldo, that will have a positive effect on his ego and his self image. You just have to re watch that interview he did last year.
I also hope that EtH will announce a new captain soon officially

Eth should send him to warm up minimum 4 times a game, and whenever we seem to be dropping in performance on the pitch. When the players see him warming up they'll kick up a gear for sure.
The only problem there is that the players Harry might replace aren’t the ones that need to kick up a gear.

After the 'i cant have been playing bad because all managers start me' interview, these last three games must have been quite an eyeopener for Maguire

Damn, this was for real? Antony burned him to death there
Yeah it’s real. If you go to Antony’s instagram story, it’s still there.

For what it’s worth, I don’t think he did it purposely or with any ill intent, but to me, it just shows Maguire’s stature in the game. He’s not really rated like that

Because hes been the overarching reason the defence has been shit for a couple years. Somehow he escaped and it was pinned on Lindelof (who himself isnt fantastic) but it was Maguire whos been shit the entire time. He would only be played because he's english, costs 80mil and given 'captaincy.' On top of that the blame game he tries to play after every defeat trying to shift it on to the team rather than himself when hes at fault time and time again all culminate into a fanbase that does not like this individual. He was boo'ed for a reason at the MCG.

There are two solutions to this that i can think of, he's sold or he's indefinitely taken out the first team as is happening now and only reintroduced when Varane (invariably) gets injured and imo AFTER Lindelof has also been injured. He should be 4th choice. In an ideal world, a club run like a top club would have binned him off and got SOME sort of money back for him. What we have done in the past is keep players in the hopes they turn it around in the 2% chance that they do, that tanks their value and we sell for 5 mil at the end.
Yes, but he isn’t in the team now, and he might need to feature in the future. Kicking the guy when he is down doesn’t serve any purpose, particularly when his services might yet be needed. What happens to him come the transfer window(s) isn’t really important in the here and now.

It’s in the clubs’ interests that he comes back a better player than he departed to the team as, for a multitude of reasons.

You are setting yourself for a disappointment. We are talking about a 29 years old player, his mentality and technical issues are nearly impossible to fix at his age. He is a backup for a good team and likely not the ideal backup for us, personally I would have Lindelof above him and I don't want to see Lindelof play often.

Is the captaincy permanently Bruno’s now? I don’t see Varane or Martinez losing their spot, injury aside, so it’d be kinda weird to not have your captain feature

Maguire: Welcome Antony
Antony: Thank you
Bruno: Welcome Antony
Antony: Thank you Captain
Ten Hag made a point of saying the captain of the club is not guaranteed game time, he also followed that up with “Bruno plays better when he’s the captain”.

So make from that what you want but it screams the obvious to me.

It’s not impossible to regain confidence - the guy has hit a nadir here he didn’t initially have and the player he came here as wasn’t the jelly mould he is now.

I’m not advocating he be back in the team, but given Varane’s injury record last season, it’s likely he’ll get his shot (unless ten Hag is seriously phasing him out and opts for Lindelof) and the hope is he can at least be assured in his play at that time. I think both sub CB’s should be taking heed of what is expected of them should they get a chance.

He isn’t getting faster mate, not at his age.

Look at the players who’ve been absolutely shite for the last year and a half, Rashford, McTomminay, Fred, Sancho etc. They’re only starting to look semi decent again after 4 or 5 games, Rashford still hasn’t found any form, and might not yet. How long do you think it’s going to take Maguire to find form in this team? And that’s if he can even get a run of games!

It’s within everyone’s best interests we move him on to West Ham as a part exchange for Rice in the summer.

His issue isn't confidence, if it was just confidence I would agree but his biggest issue is his reading of the game with and without the ball. He also has phyiscal and technical issues, he is way too stiff and can't make passes that are easily received by teammates whether we are talking about short or long passes. Maguire is a low block 1v1 defender, that shouldn't be expected to be often on the ball if you intend to play it smoothly from the back.

Think he will get cups for now. But hes probably waiting for a Varane injury to get his chance. Would be interesting to see if its him or Lindelof that becomes the first go to defender

I'd say his biggest issue is just that his style of defending doesn't complement being a partner to Licha at all because they both work best when doing the same thing, and don't work very well at covering for this thing.

Both Maguire and Licha are aggressive centre backs. They both play better when they're allowed to step out of the backline and impose themselves on opponents.

The issue with them both playing together is that neither of them is great as what you might call a "covering" centre back. This typically requires a lot more athleticism, since you're more likely to be defending on the turn against players coming at you with pace. Varane is exceptional in this regard.

Of course it's not quite as simple as a dichotomy between aggressive centre backs and covering centre backs in reality but, generally speaking, I'd say most of the sides who play with a high-line and a back four work best when they have one centre back who works better in each of these roles. I think that is at least a part of why Varane and Martinez are complementing each other much, much better than Maguire and Martinez ever will.

It suits no one. It's not as if his issues weren't present with Lindelof, Bailly, Varane and whoever plays next to him. At Leicester Evans was the better performer.

We probably should have tried to sell him in the last few weeks of the window.

His value will only plummet from now on... I get wanting to keep him around as 3rd choice CB, but honestly, Lindelof could do that job... and if we needed a 4th choice (cos you know, Phil Jones) we could have tired to pick someone up on the cheap (though that would involve "scouting" I guess)

Just going to have to disagree on the Evans comment but putting that aside, United's defence was one of the most solid in the league in 2020/21 and did even better in 2019/20. In both seasons Maguire was the most prominent centre half.

Our defence last season was absolutely shambolic no matter who played. It made very little difference when Lindelof and Varane were the centre-back pairing, the team was so dysfunctional in every facet of the game that nobody could function to a level that was adequate. Now that we have a more functional side which does not involve Maguire, I am all for keeping him out of it. With that said, it's simply wrong to say that our defence has never been able to work properly with Maguire in it.

Not sure why the pile on.
It’s the way football fans are, sadly. And always have been, despite what the self-righteous brigade try to tell us.

In a practical sense, I hope he’s taking notes from the bench on being proactive and decisive in action and execution. Dithering and indecision will not cut it in a ten Hag team and he has to get with the program if he gets PT. He can’t read the game like either one of the starters, but he can do a damn sight better than he has been doing.

Problem with Maguire is his confidence has been shattered and the pressure on him to perform the next time he’s in the team is even greater than it was because we’re seeing what a CB is supposed to be and what they need to provide for one another. I, like everyone else, assume it’ll be Varane whose position will be contested by others during the campaign if/when he’s injured. It’s unenviable to have to come in for him because he’s one of the best in the world at his best, so scrutiny of understudies can be that much harsher in evidence of what they can’t do in relation to Varane. I don’t think that’s fair, but it is how these things go and it won’t be fair on Maguire to be bashed for not being Varane. As long as he can get with the program and be solid in rotation, his role is good enough for the campaign.

For himself, I have no idea why he didn’t opt to leave. He really doesn’t need the grief and he could’ve got far more playing time elsewhere. It’s some fall from grace to go from captain and starting CB to substitute who should only be a consideration in rest, injury or rotation of the starters. I don’t know if he’s been given assurances of his World Cup starting berth, or what, but this is absolutely the worst time for him to be relegated to the bench in light of his own aspirations.
It looks like he’s one of a number of English players who believe they are better than they are, and don’t believe they need to improve. I don’t know what’s made them like that; it’s all very well blaming the Brexit press but I don’t recall e.g. Hendo having had smoke blown up his arse by them, and he’s certainly a guilty one.

I was half expecting Harry to start last night, to preserve Varane for Arsenal. The fact that it’s now three games doesn’t bode well for him at all.

You may disagree but it's true and was recognized by Leicester fans and anyone following them. If Evans wasn't an ex-player he would have been our target not Maguire. And I still liked Maguire, I liked him since his Hull days.

I had quite a few discussions with Leicester fans back when the signing happened owing to the fact that my brother supports them and the opinion that Evans was better for them only became popular once Maguire had left.

I consider that to be all very much besides the point anyway. It's quite true that our defence right now looks markedly better without Maguire in it. It is not, however, true that our defence has never looked solid with him in it and that is what your earlier post appeared to imply.

Maguire needs to play more if he wants to make the World Cup. Eth should consider resting some players if there are two games in one week.

Our defense was not good collectively. As said in the post that you quoted, Maguire is a low block 1v1 defender, in that scenario he is good, there is less space, everyone is close to each others and there is less space to manage as a unit. Now regarding that the poin that you made and that I responded to, there is no player that is going to look good in a higher and wider defensive setup with Maguire in it, his flaws prevent it, it's a bit like Van Buyten playing in anything other than a low block.

It's a tricky situation regarding him. He's 29 and a back up at best right now. But if he sell him, then we are relying on the fitness of varane and that's not a sure thing by a long mile.

May not be the best idea to sell him now as 4 good CB competing with each other is a great thing and will keep everyone on their toes. Sometimes, competition for places is everything and the minute any player thinks they are indispensable, they go to shit.

I am interested in seeing what Southgate does with him.
Southgate has often used not playing regularly as an excuse to drop players he doesn't like. While he keeps picking some others who don't play regularly.

When he first arrived he said that United conceded most of their goals (around 70%) down the left side of defence last season, which is the side him and Shaw play on.

Martinez and Malacia were both brought in to add options to that side of the defence, but since Martinez arrived Maguire seems to have decided that he wants to play right side of defence, or Ten Hag has told him he can't play left side. What became really apparent is that he can't play right side to save his life, and looked really poor in the pre-season games where he did.

I think Lindelöf is above him in the pecking order now, it's hard to see where Maguire fit's in should someone get injured or suspended.

Maybe for the Premiere League, yeah, but we'll have to rotate for the Europa. This is how he should have always been used.

Him, Lindelof, Bailly, Jones. The four horseman of shitocalypse. Hopefully they’re moved on in the next couple of windows.

Mengi can be brought through, and maybe Tuanzebe can get some minutes.

Bruno is our captain when he's not playing and it's working fine.

Yeah it's an issue for him. I did not even mention Martinez as it's clear ETH want's him there as a left footer (and being just great all around). His only real chance is on the right and there is Varane. Last season Varane had issues with injuries and maybe with adapting to a new country but, those issues look resolved now as he looks like his usual self, a Rolls Royce in defense.

The Lindelof Maguire is an interesting debate I think. Both have their own issues but I can see Victor more fitting to ETH then Harry.

I would have Lindelof, even Jones ahead of him in the pecking order. Obviously with Varane and Martinez as starters.

I'm surprised we didn't ship him out before the deadline. I'm just praying neither of our CBs are out with any injury for a prolonged period of time so I don't have to worry about seeing him in the starting lineup.

It will. It's not like England has to choose between Cannavaro, Barresi and Maguire. Harry is a very good defender in the right system. England play boring defensive crap with 3 DMs anyway so a decent passer good at progressing play defender will be there.
