To be given only a few minutes run-out when Shaw was put in much earlier suggests that ETH doesn't fully trust him. Plays like he's on a 56kbps modem. Martinez's passing and tenacity has spoilt me. Martinez is not perfect but is proving to be the better partner for Varane and a better player for ETH's system.

No chance he starts any of those Europa games unless we have no one else who can play. We have to treat this competition as something we can, and should, win. Other than closing out matches already won, I can't see Maguire getting any game time. He'd be better off being sold/putting in a transfer in January.
Both omonia and sheriff at home he will start. One or both of varane Martinez will get rested. We have a match nearly every three or four days from the city match. We will see rotation for sure

I wonder whether he pushes for a move? He probably should, for everyone’s sake.

We desperately need to get rid of all of our reserve CBs and recruit two players that are similar in playing style to Varane and Martinez. The thing about City and Liverpools squads is that even if the replacements for the first 11 are lower quality, they are of a similar mould so they never really need to change their style of play.

If either Varane or Martinez are injured, it dramatically changes how we line up, how high a line we play, which midfielders are preferred etc.

He is definitely not good with the ball at his feet when you see what Lisandro, Varane and even Lindelof can do.

He's got an okayish long pass when under no pressure, but any hint of pressure and it's panic and back to keeper. He cannot play his way out of trouble.
The traditional English centre back is a tall guy who battles with the opponents tall guy and doesnt need to do anything else besides winning those headers and something put in a cunching tackle. When an English player also has a decent long ball he is quickly considered good with the ball/ball playing centre back. Maguire isnt the worst when he is on the ball but he isnt great on the ball either. He is just okay. Okay describes him best i think, when in good form he is an okay defender. Nothing special but acceptable.

Was great to see the big slab come on, take the armband straight off Bruno and start pointing.

I can't see him getting ahead of Varane or Martinez. ETH had already mentioned said about the leadership of Varane at the back. Maguire needs to leave in the January window.

First two games United concede 6 goals, next 6 games only three conceded, was the reason just Maguire? or a combination of ETH coaching plus omission of Maguire?

I agree but that will never happen sadly , he will run out every second of his contract and the greedy(he is 100% legally entitled to be tbh) fecker will not want to move until he runs it out because of the insane ridiculous money he's on and will NEVER see a contract like this ever again because he is crap and no team will pay anything near the daylight robbery wages he's on. slabhead refuses to take a huge pay cut and move because stonks and he needs to eat(!) Also wants to save up for that Bugatti he's eyeing up at the local Knutsford dealer..

"i can easily find 3 players that can do the same as him when i am playing on amateur level on sunday afternoon , i am being serious here , not the nicest thing to say but i truly mean it". Rafael Van der Vaart on Maguire.

If you ignore his nationality, media hype , price tag and see Maguire play as it is , VdV was absolutely spot on. Maguire does play like sunday league player. Top reds comparing this nobody to 4x UCL and world cup champions Varane was so disrespectful
It's harsh considering Maguire has shown he's capable of being very good. His form in the second half of 20/21 and how he generally plays for England is comfortably better than most defenders are capable of performing.

Obviously the huge issue is that he's been here for over three years now, and that half a season is the only time he's been consistently good enough. The rest of the time he's either been very inconsistent, or consistently shit. By now he seems to be mentally broken, and both us and himself will be better off with him moving on and starting again. He's a much better player than he's shown over the last 13 months but I don't think he's going to be able to show that here.

It's great not seeing his name first on the teamsheet anymore. That ship has well and truly sailed now, thank feck. I don't know how Southgate justifies selecting him and Shaw for the England setup, but that's his problem. Hopefully he'll see the light and scootle off in January.

Against who ? Most of the time england played against country whose quality are less than regular prem side. Playing well against the likes of San Marino and Andorra isn't something to brag about.

4 relegation and 0 career medal in his cv suggest that he is nothing else but shite. Any other regular companies in the world wouldn't hire someone whose cv looks like him , paying exorbitant fee to get him, paying premium wage for him and made him team leader for your new project knowing he has bottled all his previous project before. Our club are run by bunch of incompetent fool i can only think there has to be some kind of corruption behind this deal. We would have laughed if it was rival club who paid 80m for him. It also baffles me how Southgate keep picking him on for national team, like you aren't going to win anything with him in the team that's without a doubt.

That really is painting a false narrative but I see a lot of people repeat it without context.

The first of those relegations was his first season where he only started four games at the end of the season. The following season he was, at the age of 18, Sheffield United's best player and in the Team of the Year for League One.

His second and third relegations were both in 14/15, when both Hull and Wigan got relegated. It was his first season at Hull and didn't start a single league game for them, while most of the damage for Wigan happened before his loan and their form after he arrived would have seen them stay up if spread out over the entire season.

The only relegation where he actually played a significant part was Hull's relegation in 16/17, but even then he was easily their best player that season.

We obviously overpaid for him, and he shouldn't have been made captain (although it should be noted that we didn't have a single good option for that role in the squad). But it's annoying to see people go overboard.

Oh, come on. That's just a plain stupid argument. England doesn't just play Andorra and San Marino, and it's not like Maguire hasn't been performing for England also when they play the best. He was on the Euros all-tournament team, for feck's sake.

Actually wonder if Ed Woodward and Ole bought Maguire with the intention of him being the new Gary Pallister?

I doubt Woodward cares about stuff like that but Ole certainly wanted to have a British core. Fergie always had the British core and Ole being the clueless manager that he is wanted to copy that. Difference was that Fergie his British players were actually good while Ole signed Maguire, AWB, Dan James and wanted to have Longstaff. Players that wouldnt even be considered at United if they werent British...

I can't see him getting back into the side displacing Varane or Martinez.

Good, they look on a completely different level to him, what's quite worrying though is that he's third choice, so an injury away from been back in the first team again.

Either way he'll soon be playing every week given the fixture list we have coming up, I just hope ETH has worked some magic on him.

Any defender that is dependent on others to be better is not good enough period, get rid of him next window.

I hate this stuff showing up in the media.

This idea that he needs pace around him is just an admission that he can't play in a high line and be trusted in 1v1s. Its sad, really.

I understand Maguire's perspective. To some extent its like the whole 'unlock Pogba' discussion. If United wanted to play a high line the club should not have signed Maguire. Once we signed him, if we still wanted to go in that direction, we needed to get a Konate or an Upamecano who could run like the wind and cover for his mistakes. I can see how he might feel that the club spent £80m on him but isn't playing him in a system or a way that suits his strenghts.

However, from the perspective of the club, from the perspective of a fan, I would argue that the upside of playing to Maguire's strengths isn't big enough to warrant doing it. Maguire doesn't offer such a big benefit at his best that its worth benching Martinez or shifting to a low block just to keep him in the team.

The truth is we should never have signed him. Its not his fault we did and nobody can blame him for taking the chance to play for Man Utd. However, when you look at how Liverpool constructed Klopp's defence to allow him to play pressing football, its obvious pace is essential to the style of football we want to play. Maguire doesn't have it, never has had it and never will have it.

I don't think City have anymore pace than we do. Maguire has enough pace around him.

Big difference is protecting centre backs via having the ball.

It's true Dias wouldn't look the same player with us over the last 12 month because he'd be repeatedly tested. Where as with City he isn't. Simple really.

I mostly agree with you. However, its also fair to say that Kyle Walker tucking has helped City's defenders when they are caught out by pace (at times).

Still, this stuff just reads like sour grapes and, as I said, in the cold light of day its an admission that Maguire can't do what we want.

There's a reason Klopp doesn't have any slow centre backs, the nature of Liverpool's pressing game just won't work with slow centre backs. What Ten Hag is trying to get us to be able to do is something, I'm afraid, is probably just beyond Maguire.

Guess the rumours about him preferring to work with Henderson are true then. So many of last season's rumours are turning to be true :nervous:

Worth noting Harry that the defence also shipped 44 goals the season before too

Isn’t only a British phenomena. It also has to do with the fact that the best CB’s in the world mostly are tall guys, and I don’t think that is a coincidence. Great physical skill is a need in order to handle attackers like Lew, Benzema and Haaland. At the same time they have to have good technique and mental skills.

Maguire lacks speed in order to become a world class CB (lets say among top 15 in the world) and I think example Martinez lack physical robustness and tallness to become a world class CB. His potensial is probably higher as CDM.

If both Martinez and Maguire are in their best form (best versions of themselves), I’m not 100 % sure who is the best CB, but my vote probably goes to Maguire (as long as he is partnered with a speedy gonzales
:D).

Leicester are likely to be around the relegation spots come January. Can see them asking for Harry to come in on a loan deal in that window.

If we're sensible, we should ask for a loan fee and a obligation to buy clause (i.e. if they avoid relegation, they have to buy him for...£40m).

Bloody norma, we had Shaw and Wan Bissaka either side of him, and then we bought Varane.
Does he need Usain Bolt back there with him?

And it doesn't matter how much pace you have when you can't pass it 5 yards without a mistake, or get rinsed in a 1 v 1.

It definitely feels like it's near his end days here, and if we could get 40-50m off anyone it'd be a smart move for all. As long as the buying club sit a bit deeper, as that's what he needs.
