3 People in the studio are not referees and have an opinion, and Peter Walton is qualified to make that call.

I haven't been following the thread so apologies if it's been touched on already but does anyone else think the Gvardiol handball was a good case for a penalty?

His arm is tight against his body, yes but he deliberately used it to block the shot. 100% hand to ball which I'm guessing negates the whole 'natural position/tight against the body' thing?
Absolutely. To me Gvardiol knew what he was doing.

Every time I've watched this De Paul played he is utterly shit. He is one of the reason Messi isn't involve in the game as much as he should be. Argentina midfield is very weak and awful, they are failing miserably to find and involve Messi who seem to cause issues for defenses and inject pace every time he gets the ball.

But this De Paul dude deserve a special type of mention for how terrible a footballer he is. Dude is miserably failing even at the simplest passes.

I hope Messi isn’t injured, or the final is going to be a waste of time.

This is a such a strange conversation. Neville’s argument is that he has to go out and block the shot, but he didn’t

Next time someone makes a tackle as the last defender and misses the ball “sorry I had to try and block the ball”.

The pundits on ITV showed how clueless they can be  How does Neville not realise how barmy his logic is there

The keeper has as much a right to go for that as the attacker has.
Yeah he has a right to go for the ball, BUT he has to win the ball or at least get some contact on it. Keeper did neither and, instead, clattered Alvarez. It's a foul and a penalty.

What are they on about? He tries to save the shot, doesn't and clatters into the player. It's a clear penalty.
It almost makes you question day and night doesn't it!
Seeing the three of them so adamant that a keeper moving to the right and taking a defender down, without touching the ball isn't a foul.

That's not a pen!

The goalie gets his foot on the ground before the contact.

Every ref will tell you the same.

Var should have corrected him, or at least tell him to check it himself.

Again, that's not a pen by the rules of the game.

It’s a pen. The keeper isn’t standing there, he’s sprinting towards the ball, doesn’t get it and blocks off the player. It’s unfortunate but Wright etc pretending he’s just standing there doesn’t make any sense

Referee explains why it is a clear penalty but pundits say no. What are they on about

ITV continuing their obviously correct decision was obviously wrong thing that they've done for every single match

Yes, but he has to make a play on the ball. So, he was too late and while being too late made contact with the player, caused the player to be unable to follow-up on the play- all while not playing the ball, in a game where you are supposed to play the ball.

I am truly amazed by the amount of people not understanding basic rules?

Alvarez kicks the ball out of the way, scuffing his shot, so decides to run into the keeper and flop over. He doesn't have possession of the ball and the keeper is just stood there by that point. Alvarez makes the contact.

Keeper stops the player following up the shot, he could easily get in front of the Croatia player that received the ball with a slide shot or other ways.

A referee literally just argued why its a penalty.

Surprised they haven't wheeled in a naked Souness screaming to see a VAR Replay.

I'm genuinely baffled by it.

It's a very obvious penalty, keeper absolutely clatters Alvarez, who doesn't move into him or any of that nonsense.

So if both get very feet are on the ground it can't be a pen. When did this rule come in?

That if you get to the ball first and then the keeper has charged out (with the intent of getting to the ball first too/potential quick save instead) and blocked the attacker, it's going to be a pen. If Alvarez clearly shoots that for instance and it's saved and then followed up with the block = no foul. Alvarez played it around or at least showed that intent for the pure intention of winning the penalty.
Is that an actual rule
