Why would him flying a day later delay the announcement for three days?

Surely you'd want him playing a part again Lens? There's the Athletic game but you don't really want to stick him on a plane again surely.
Exactly what I was thinking.

Don't understand how the explanation results in a 3 day delay. And, like you say, it was all looking like he'd be available for one of the friendlies - ideally at Old Trafford. But delaying his announcement so long makes that seem less likely, and more likely he'll just come out onto the pitch before the game or at HT to be introduced to the fans?

Headline and breaking on Ekstra Bladet (largest Danish tabloid) says that "United confirm: Højlund will be presented in the weekend".

Apparently Andrew Ward, Director of Media and Public Affaird @ United has confirmed to Ekstra Bladet that he will be presented in the weekend in connection with the Lens game.

I called it first. Who knew I was an ITK. :wenger:

I posted this in the tweets thread, but I'm pretty confident that they'll introduce/announce him at OT before our friendly starts. Kinda like how Varane was introduced if I'm not wrong. Everything is about PR my dudes.

They probably want to wheel him out because we are a PR club, it means we are doing this to him in order to curb protests at the match or so when they announce the Greenwood decision before then it paperw over that

Can we have one of these old fashioned photo shoots on the pitch pre match against Lens? Desk and pen at the ready on the center circle? Now that’s a proper signing, none of this soft modern short video crap.

That's actually a decent shout about a possible connection to the Greenwood announcement - depending on the planned timing of that, of course.

But, yeah, they could be planning to make that announcement later in the week, and hope that publicly confirming Hojlund soon after helps overshadow it?

Either way, although I understand the need for PR in this era, I'm personally much more interested in knowing it's all been signed rather than waiting around for social media videos, photos, etc. And I was hoping he'd at least be able to get one PSF for he and his team mates to learn a little about each other, so that's frustrating if it's being delayed for avoidable and / or PR reasons.

This place utter meltdown over official announcements tickles me so much
It's obviously not about the announcement, it's about whether he can train and play in our pre-season games this weekend.

If the deal isn't announced in time for this weekend, it means he's missed all our pre-season because we couldn't get a deal done within a reasonable time frame.

Then it may be better to announce Hojlund, and very quickly thereafter issue a low-key note on MG. So that it goes behind the main scene (where there will be new shiny Hojlund)

I really hope we don’t parade him on the pitch like Varane & Casemiro. He’s 20 and doesn’t need that pressure.

So for all the weirdos who are obsessed with journalists one way or another, based on the latest reports, are the Romano haters/supporters in tears or are they in orgasmic euphoria?

He's going to be playing for Manchester United. There will be pressure whether he wants it or not

Visa is fine as excuse, I guess, though you'd think they had the docs prepared to sign a few days ago once deal was in final stages. I thought contract was in place except for the signature before a deal was fully agreed with Atalanta though -its not like we're having to haggle with him in order to persuade him to come (guy's already half-announced himself via social media), or he's someone with complex existing image rights issues like established marquee players.

He's been playing all pre-season for Atalanta building up his match fitness, so it's not as if he lacks relative sharpness. I get why we'd do the big reveal at the weekend, but there's no reason to delay training with the team, and if he is training with the team already, we're so close to the actual start of the PL that by not playing him this weekend we risk delaying his in-game introduction to competitive league fixtures, which is considerably less ideal than him getting a run out in the Lens game.

No big deal. Surely wouldn't be a starter early in the season anyway. A 30 min run out this weekend doesn't change anything.

Surely he will be a starter from game one - we have no other strikers to choose from
It'll be Sancho false 9 with Rashford cutting in and Antony on the right, for quite a lot of the season I'd guess. Hojlund is only 20. He's not gonna be a starter from day 1. He took half a year of being a sub for Atalanta, adapting to the serie a... I'd expect somewhat similar unless he really steps up quickly which is unrealistic.

His contract will be signed already, the one they parade them with for the photos isn't their actual contract. As soon as the medical is finished, he'll be signed, and will train. I still fail to see why we wouldn't give him a few minutes in the OT friendly though, especially if he's played pre season for Atalanta and has trained for a couple of days.

Delaying him only means longer for him to get up to speed. I can see we're going to drip feed him in as a sub for Wolves, and then he'll play little to no part in the London aways if he's not had many minutes so will be a while before we see him starting I reckon.

That is the sort of idea that dies quickly when it gets tried in a competitive game. I can’t see it working at all.

Agree. I'm also expecting quite a lot of Rashford starting at 9 unless Martial miraculously starts being fit.

On the other hand if we got away with Weghorst starting a serious number of games then you could say what's the worst that could happen.

I disagree, I think it may surprise a few that think ETH sees Hojlund as this figure he's just going to ease in and not rely upon too much. He might say that because it makes sense to downplay a young signing.

Even if he starts that way for a few games I think it will be sacked off very quickly when we see the physicality, runs and drive Hojlund has compared to Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial (if he ever makes it onto a pitch). I can't see them being a better option for much of the season than Hojlund. It's going to be a case of learning on the job.

ETH has not brought him in to sit on the bench for half the season, he will be a integral part of the starting 11 for most of the season i reckon.

For us to play to our full potential, we need a player like him playing.

Its not like the lad is some weedy 18 year old with plenty of growing to do.

A bit weird that both him and Onana needed to announce their transfers before the club. I miss the days when all the player needed to do was hold the shirt, we used to even announce it subject to medical. Was really hoping he'd be involved in our next game.
Those were the days..

If he can't handle the pressure of merely wandering out to the pitch in front of our crowd, how's he going to handle playing for us?!

It’s one thing playing false 9 in pre season he will be absolutely eaten alive in the PL he offers nothing Sancho he must be the most underwhelming players we’ve ever bought sadly
