There’s no question whatsoever that De Gea made several mistakes last season, including the Benrahma goal that turned out to be the final straw for club supporters, but I doubt anyone here can name even two keepers on the planet who last season didn’t make 4 or 5 mistakes that led to goals last season.
However, upgrading on a position is never a bad idea when possible. And so ETH thought that Onana would be an upgrade on De Gea — which I hope is not considered to be a controversial statement by our touchy Onana defenders here — largely on the ground that although Onana as skilled a shot stopper as De Gea that his passing skills would elevate our possession and thus attack, and yes as I’ve proven repeatedly here, that Onana would “transform” our attack. It hasn’t quite worked out that way and thus we have a keeper who just isn’t anywhere near the shot stopper De Gea but that his undeniable superior ball control skills have made zero difference to our ability to control and win matches.
If we have any real intention of pushing back into the PL title conversation next year we’ll have to have a serious discussion about to do about Onana. As it stands right, we need to go back into the transfer market even if it means relegating Onana to the bench or selling him for the 5-10m max we’d get for him.
