I still think he's rubbish

You lot can keep pretending he's great if you want.

He's not though, far from it, and sooner or later you're all going to have to admit it
He's not rubbish. He's average.

Look it's pretty simple cnutos

Here's the continuum of football greatness:

My sister____________________________________Maradona

Zoom in on the middle, and you get:

_____Titus Bramble__________________________Zinedine Zidane_____

Zoom in on the middle again:

_____Mohammed Sissoko_____________________Frank Lampard_______

One more time:

_______Darren Fletcher_____________________Owen Hargreaves_______

They're both feckin average, Hargreaves is a fair bit less average

I hope this helps

well said. I give up, im sure Hargreaves will prove himself in a big game and evryone will change their minds. Kind off like what happened with Carrick, a few weeks ago people wanted SAF to play a scholes-Anderson midfield because Carrick is shit...look at them now. Hargreaves will prove what a good player he is
Indeed. I'm begining to see what a waste of time trying to get people to see the obvious is

Declare it again and again all you want. You will inevitably have to accept you are wrong. Time will sort you out. This is one war you've lost from the start

Plech, I'd say fletch and Hargreaves were much closer to each other on that graph.

Chief, are you related to Hargreaves by any chance?

Average footballers should not play for United.

At the very least, we should not be paying 18 Million for such mediocrity.

Not when they're being selected ahead of better than average footballers they shouldn't.

It's like paying 20 million for Carlton Cole, and then playing him instead of Carlos Tevez, because someone said he can run faster

Hargreaves .Fletcher's looking a better prospect ffs.
Based on the Arsenal performance, should be a good alternative in the squad.

The issue is whether he can repeat the performance or play another typical Fletcher kind of game the next time he is on the pitch.

But based on what has been seen, Hargreaves is still much much better in these European nights than Fletcher.

However, with the Arsenal performance, we all look forward to a more confident Fletcher, lifting his performance game after game.

Actually i expected a hard man-type of signing, he doesn't go to ground very often and sometimes suffers from the Fletcher syndrome, could not stamp his authority in the midfield. He did alright in the first half and broke up Lyon attacks, but then people complain our play was too tactical and negative.

I thought that a 200% efforted Fletcher might have been more effective today, because sometimes Hargo looks an awful lot like Fletcher, only a little stronger.
Agreed. But can Fletcher put in 200% every match. A lot of critics are still saying that the Arsenal performance of Fletcher is a one-off thing. (Much like Diego Forlan scoring two goals against Liverpool at Anfield)

The difference is probably confidence. Fletcher seriously lacked confidence for a long time. Hope he regained some if not all of it for his scintillating performance against Arsenal.

Let's see if Fletcher can maintain his good form for the next match. If, and only if, he is picked and perform well against Nicky Butt in the next match versus Newcastle, then Hargreaves would need to work hard to justify selection as well.

Heard a good view on Fletched yesterday(albeit from a yank talk show). It's not that he's a bad player, it's that there are people better at what he's good at than him. For instance, Hargreaves is a better defender, Fletcher is a better passer. Carrick is a better passer, Fletcher is a better defender. He gets unlucky because for all his strengths, there's someone else better at that aspect than him.
Agreed.

For all the chances and opportunities being selected to be on the right flank when Beckham left, he did not for a single occassion impressed as much as he did playing his natural position in central midfield against Arsenal the other day.

The crowd went crazy when Fletcher stormed down the right "a la Kanchelski" style and delivered a decent cross. Should have seized the opportunity to play at that level from the start instead of being the person who slows down attacks and checks back all the time. Well, to be fair, Fletcher is much much a better player playing in central midfield.

Fletcher used to be de-possessed and charged off the ball often. A problem with confidence and for many posts have stated, needs to bulk up as well.

Would the selection of Fletcher have changed the result of the match? Many many people seriously doubt so.

Fletcher would've done just as well today, he should've stopped the pass to Benzema for the goal as well...
 Fletcher Fan. Yes, probably would've and probably should've. Like when Fletcher should've headed the ball away from Kaka against Milan last year. Or when Fletcher would've clear the ball off the line against Arsenal instead of standing there looking at it float in.

Come on. We know there is a rejuvenated Fletcher emerging. Proving his critics wrong, but putting his name up everytime at the expense of another player is really going too far.

As Hairdryer correctly stated. Given the correct formation, the correct opponents and playing in the correct position. Fletcher can be a more than decent player in the squad. Which Fletcher has already showed making an impact by scoring two goals against Arsenal.

3 clear cut chances??? Rooney in the first half 1 on 1 with the keeper is the only clear cut chance we had. Even the goal was pretty fortunate as it rebounded off a Lyon defender albeit from a terrific cross from Nani.

We were toothless tonight. Our setpieces were awful and we played with 1 isolated striker for over an hour. Yes we dominated the possession, but it was in harmless areas.
I don't agree at all.

I wouldn't say he is rubbish. Liam Miller, Djemba-Djemba were rubbish. Hargreaves has been decent, but I expect much more. Fair enough to say give him time, it's just that I'm not sure what to expect. What is his best? My memories of WC2006 are quite hazy now, but what I did know is that prior to the WC, Hargreaves was the England donkey and everyone would laugh and moan whenever Sven put him on the teamsheet. Hargreaves in Bayern I am not sure either, I always thought Demichelis was their 'hard man'.

Against Lyon I agree that he did alright. Pinning all the blame on him for Benzema's goal is probably harsh. However, to those who said he kept Juninho quiet I concur. Juninho may be their key man but he was never going to be a Kaka or a Messi, his most dangerous game is his set pieces and ironically, Hargreaves gave him a couple of opportunities by carelessly giving away fouls..

Hargreaves played well, helped in keeping the dangerous Govou quiet. He was given a job, to blunt Lyon's attacks, a job he performed very well.
Precisely! The big irony one here is people wanted us to play like we played Arsenal, creating nmerous chances, away from home, against a well preapred side, organised and well motivated, decent side. Talk of naivety or plain delusion

Hargreaves had a good game last night. We were set out to be defensive (much to my disappointment) and we got a result to match our intentions. He could be at fault for the goal, but so could Rio and Vidic for such was the talent of that Eczema fella.

Fecking hell, talk about Caftard City!

It's unbelieve that some people want to waste time in posting such a thread in the first place. It's only and has only been a small minority of supporters that have even touted him as the next Keano, but let us reason, lads.

The man himself never claimed to be the second coming of El Keano De Christ! Not even the boss touted him as such. He was bought for his abillity to break up attacks in difficult games against dangerous playmakers and forward players and not for his prowess on the ball. Feck, if this was a requirement for someone of his position then Makalele would have never been given a chance at Madrid, Gattuso at Milan, etc etc you get the point here.

If some people want to harp on about how much he isn't Keano then feck them. For us people that were sane enough to have realistic expectations of the lad, then great, because we'll always appreciate for Hargreaves for what he DOES and not what he lacks compared to Keano.

For me, there is a clear distinction. If you prefer Carrick then you prefer good, aesthetically pleasing football. If you prefer Hargreaves then you would probably find the dross served up by Chelsea and Liverpool more pleasing.
we have played good football earlier in the season when hargreaves was playing. and we have also played poor with carrick playing.. it's not as black and white as you're making it sound. they offer something different depending on our opposition and the scoreline.

hargreaves didnt do what he was bought for. He was absolute crap, fletcher should have been played. He may not be the most skilled player in the world but at least he does what hes supposed to do and he does it damn well.
Based on Fletcher's Arsenal performance? May be. But can Fletcher keep up this level the next match? No one knows.

Thankyou. One look at today's game will notice that in the first half, even Uniteds attacking players were playing a very restricted and deep laying game. Ronaldo going forward reservedly, Giggs dropping central to compact the play, Anderson didn't start driving forward until the second half, etc... So, you'd be right in pointing out that this has nothing to do with Hargreaves at all.

There are some Hargreaves bashing threads going on in United forums. The expectations are high on him being the next Keano, which I think is unrealistic as Keano is a very special player, a selective few we'll come to see in our life time. In the game against Lyon, I thought Harry had improved on his passing, his movements - his back heel near the box, and increased forward runs. I believe he'll play better, but to place any high expectations on him can cause disappointments, and unnecessary pressure on the player himself.

would you people shut up with the pricetag comments.. players are sold for however much a team is willing to pay. you can't blame any player for how much he sells for.. SAF wanted a DM to complete his puzzle, hargreaves was one of the only ones available who actually wanted to come to united, and he didn't mind coughing up 18mill because that's the nature of the transfer market now, and with class DMs so far and few in the world, SAF was going to pay that much or more sometime or later. plus he's an english int'l.. keep a british base.

I dont think he'll get a place in the first XI. Yesterday we saw that he offers us nothing going forward, slows us down in build up play and cant really play forward but very often turns away and plays it backwards. You might say now that he has a specific job and not to be creative. But that's too limited imo.

Carrick should be picked ahead of him. I can see Hargreaves coming on in the 2nd half to defend our lead, but wouldnt really start him if Carrick is fit

fair enough, carrick has been good as of late. i think he should definitely start at home to lyon to really knock them off their feet and attack like we did against arse and roma last year. but hargreaves can and does burst forward when he can.. he has the pace to do so.
