I really don't think Chelsea's attack is as fluid as Liverpool and as such think its overkill to go for 2 holding players when its just Costa up front in a 3-5-2. I reckon we'll see Mata in this, especially after his performance last night.
I agree with you that we can definitely afford to be more expansive in this game; especially when Martial looks a little better than he has so far this season.

Though I am not sure it'll happen. Jose will again go in with the intention of not losing the game. That's what he does in away games against top opposition.

    The rainbow's end
Two question marks regarding the lineup imo, presuming that Chelsea will stick to their recent 343.

The two holding players seems to be a given in order to block Hazard and Willian from cutting inside and to not allow them much space in between our lines. The third midfielder's role is still open. Will it be a play maker/second striker who will try to get in good positions, create as many 3v2 situations as he can and help Zlatan get more time on the ball or will it be the more conservative approach with Pogba as the more advanced midfielder like it was in the Liverpool game with clear instructions to assist the other two and keep an eye for late runs from the opposition midfielders more than anything else?

The other and even more crucial choice is the wingers since Conte's tactics rely heavily on them to create numerical advantages for his teams in the wide areas. Will Mourinho opt for containing both of them or will we try to take the game to them at least on one wing by using a more attacking player who will force the WB to stay back. The absence of any play maker (wide or central) and/or player who could hold up the ball against Liverpool left Ibrahimovic isolated and made us look rather toothless up front despie some good spells of possession. Now, Moreno seems to be in good form and therefore Young is a sound choice but on the other wing we can "afford" either Martial or Mata against Moses in ordr to have someone playing close to Ibra.

A draw here will be disappointing IMO, given that our last 2 games have been draws. If we draw to Chelsea that'll make it 3 points from 3 games. If we had beaten Stoke but lost to Liverpool and then lose to Chelsea, we still have gained the same points.

I don't mind a defensive set up, but let's not park the bus. Chelsea have been hot and cold this season, and they can definitely be vulnerable under pressure, which I maintain we are superb at.

Apparently we sill set up as we did v Liverpool because Liverpool and Chelsea are as good as each other. United aren't good enough to attack the top teams.
    Chelsea. Top team.

Jose Mourinho has revealed Chris Smalling was forced off against Fenerbahce because of a muscle problem.

Smalling started the Europa League tie at Old Trafford but was substituted at half-time with United already 3-0 up.

Mourinho confirmed afterwards that the defender, who has started the last eight games, had been withdrawn because of a muscular injury.

Bailly and Blind in defense then? I imagine we'll see a midfield of Pogba Herrera and Fellaini so.

Fecking just our luck. Could use his physicality against Costa.

Oh well, let Costa be Bailly'd then.

If Smalling isn't fit then put Bailly & Blind centre-back and Shaw at LB.

If Martial was going to start on Sunday, Mourinho would have taken him off early. I think it'll be Lingard & Young on the wings or Rashford & Young again. He will want the defensive discipline again and he was hugely impressed with Young's performance so I think he keeps his place.

    I think it'll be:
    De Gea
    Valencia--Bailly--Blind--Shaw
    Herrera--Fellaini--Pogba
    Lingard--Ibrahimovic--Young

If Smalling is fit then put him in for Shaw. I would rather Martial start but don't think that will happen just yet.

Bit nervous about this one. Chelsea will be fired up to show Mourinho.

Beat Chelsea and it will have capped off a good week. Draw and it's been a decent/average week. Lose then it turns into a disappointing week.

I will be so delighted if we win, I don't care how we do it.

I think we have forward issues for this game. We aren't going to get many chances and Ibra has been missing too much, for me he shouldn't start (although certainly will) and while Rooney had a good game last night, it wasn't really good enough still and it was noticeable that he didn't really do much decent around the box, he just made some good chances (he's basically a playmaker now).
So that leaves Rashford and Martial. Jose doens't have the balls to start with Rashford up front, despite the fact he's done well enough to deserve it. And Martial hasn't quite been on his game this season and Jose seems to prefer him more as a winger/inside forward.

I think this will be a direct copy/paste of sunday. We'll park all of the buses, Ibra will miss our best chance, Dave will pull off a couple of super saves and I'll get drunk out of boredom and wonder why I couldn't find anything better to do with my sunday afternoon. If we're really lucky Pogba will score a pearler and we'll all be sucking each other off until wednesday.

All this said, I'm excited/terrified to watch it.

PS - If Micky isn't going to start, this is what I'd like to see:
    Dave
    Toni --- Bailly --- Smalling/Blind --- Shaw
    Herrera
    Pogba --- Mata
    Lingard ---------------- Martial
    Rashford
I know I'd be shitting myself against that lineup right now. Lingard might not be amazing, but he seems to get involved in a goal in nearly every game he plays in and we play well. Also more dabbing.

I can't see Carrick starting two games in a few days so I guess that Fellaini comes back in

Just a few decisions for Jose:

    1) Is Smalling fit enough? If not, bring Shaw in and move Blind to CB.
    2) Fellaini, Carrick, or Mata to join Pogba and Herrera in midfield? Fellaini was probably rested for this so it's most likely him, but Carrick and Mata are doing almost everything they can to force their way back into the side (they probably would have if this game wasn't Chelsea away).
    3) Zlatan and Rashford surely come back in, so does Lingard keep his place or do we go with Young again? I expect Martial to lose out purely because he's just back from injury. I'm thinking Young's most likely.

    De Gea
    Valencia Bailly Smalling Blind
    Herrera Pogba Fellaini
    Rashford Ibrahimovic Young
    ---
Romero; Fosu-Mensah, Shaw; Carrick, Mata; Martial, Rooney

If Smalling isn't fit, Shaw to the first XI and Rojo on the bench. Harsh on Lingard, but Rooney won't be left out entirely and I think Martial or Mata could have more of an impact. Carrick could be the one to miss out for Lingard, however.

Mkhitaryan is probably going to return against City, along with the likes of Darmian, Shaw, Carrick, Mata, Rooney, and Martial again to get more fitness and try to impress.

I'm confident we won't lose this game.

If its Terry and Cahill alongside Ivanovic, I'd be very tempted to sit Zlatan and go with Rashford as the central striker for this one.

    Martial Rashford Lingard
    Pogba Fellaini
    Herrera
    Blind Smalling Bailly Valencia
    deGea

I am actually very confident about this game. Not because I think the Fenerbache result means anything as they are very poor but just because I don't rate Chelsea and I feel we will be up for this game.

I would be tempted to drop Zlatan for this and play 3 pacey attacking players as I don't think Cahill and co deal with that very well where as they are reasonable strong on the air. No chance Mourinho is dropping Zlatan though as he is now as undroppable as Rooney was I was despite not being in great form.

We need to revert back to the same tactic's that was used at Anfield and chances are we'll nick it by a goal.
I don't think we need to play like that against Chelsea. They are nowhere near as good as Liverpool going forward.

Massive for both teams, as a neutral I hope to see a 4-3-3 vs a 3-4-3. Both teams on the way up and looking for a much needed boost to fly. Before Liverpool and Fenerbahce, I had Chelsea favourites but not now, not with this rising United momentum. I don't think of a draw but it may be the most natural way to settle a cracking game. 2-2 to me.

The last time we beat Chelsea was 31st Oct 2012, 10 matches ago, all competitions combined. A win is well overdue.
Only 1 league win in last 14 matches at Bridge as well . Since beating them 3-0 towards end of 2001-02 season, we have only won once there in league, in 2012-13 season, helped by 2 red cards for Chelsea.
Didn't we beat them there in 2004/05, when they seemed unbeatable? 1-0, Fletcher with a looping header? Or was that at OT...

I hope we frustrate the shit out of Costa and get the cnut sent off for once this season.

Though with an equivalent cnut refereeing the game in the form of Atkinson, this is unlikely.

From what I understand Costa is one of the dirtiest players out there.
But he is also one of the most intelligent when it comes to fouling and performing his off-the-ball incidents.
To get him sent off will require a minor miracle. Fellaini on the other hand, has low intelligence and will quite happily foul a player right in front of the referee.

The problem on Sunday might be that the Chelsea players know all of Jose's tricks but we don't know Conte's.

    We will lose this,

No idea why anyone in their right mind would expect us to win and it be a matter of fact situation that we should, baffling in the extreme and quite odd considering the following:

    - Chelsea in general are very difficult to beat at home and not many clubs do in general.
    - Our record at Stamford Bridge is terrible.
    - We havent played a Conte team before and they are no push overs at all.
    - Chelsea are looking to establish themselves the same way we are and are looking for a big result on Sunday.

Unless we set-up the same way as we did vs Pool we are in for a long evening, shut the game down and take our chances.

Id take a bore 0-0 right now.

I think it's more of an advantage Jose knowing the Chelsea players and what their weaknesses are. The Chelsea players can't anticipate what Jose is going to do.

In last 14 games at the bridge we have won 1 drawn 5 and lost 8. People who are predicting a united win need to calm down. Draw here would be a good result.

Completely agree, wed be lucky with a draw in-fact, I have the exact same feeling as I did for the Pool game.

I don't really think that's particularly relevant. What happened in the past has little bearing on what's going to happen on Sunday. I honestly think we have a better shot at winning than we did for the Liverpool game - Chelsea aren't as dangerous as they are and have had some pretty bad results already this season.

is Zlatan the way to go for this game, Chelsea have played a very high line since they switched to a back 3, the pace of Rashford would seem to be a more obvious choice here!
