I disagree with almost all of this. Exam results may be better these days but that is because it is much easier to get top marks now - lots of coursework instead of exams (in my day coursework was barely a thing at all) and the difficulty of the exams was much harder than it is now. Also you have way more 'soft' subjects to choose from which are not as challenging as the core subjects kids had to do 30/40+ years ago.

People are much smarter now you say? Not in the slightest. People have access to much more information than we had even 20 years ago with the rise of the internet. I would argue that this has exposed people for being incredibly stupid as they can now choose to believe any old nonsense they read online without having to put any effort in to research or critique the information to actually understand it or judge it's accuracy.

This is why we get so many people offering opinions on things with paper thin understanding of what they are talking about and with such conviction because they are able to surround themselves with like minded people online. The world online at least feels infinitely more stupid than ever.
It’s called the Flynn Effect. Maybe.

At this rate they should cancel Football for any royal even like a Royal Wedding, Royal Visit as it would need proper respect and also Policing and UK people must be forced watch royal and nothing else. No wonder Harry and Meghan skipped this.

Would like to point out 30 to 40 years ago having a degree wasn't common. Now it is. To even get a decent job you need one now. I kind of disagree.
It's true, however let's not forget that many new degrees have been created in the last 2 decades, and they are easier to finish, that helps to inflate the % of people with a degree compared to 50 years ago.

You claimed people were better educated back then.
That's not what I said. Please read the post I was responding to and then my reply again. Also being more educated than someone else does not mean you are smarter.

So all Premier League matches will be played next Saturday and Sunday I presume? United vs Leeds still on?
Very unlikely. The policing issue was a rubbish excuse for this weekend, but it will be valid next weekend. It will be chaos and a logistical nightmare. I doubt they'd also want to deal with games being played on top of it.

Why wouldn’t we be allowed to play a game in Moldova
well, there's no match day forum yet so I didn't know if anything had been confirmed (I see from other posts it has). Plus FA could always apply to EUFA for a postponement (if, for instance, that was the day the coffin passed through/near Manchester and there would need to be crowd control)

looks like the games being played in London are most likely to be cancelled next weekend. The rest may go ahead. So the Spurs V Leicester, Brentford v Arsenal and Chelsea v Liverpool are the ones in the PL.

How then were the Police able to manage 2 million people at the Notting Hill Carnival and also several matches in London on the same weekend only a few weeks ago?

The MET have already said they can handle it.

Absolutely. There's been plenty of different views discussed online but that's quite appropriate as there's the opportunity for discussion and revision of those views. Football fans aren't animals.
There's plenty of moron fans about. Only takes a few of them to ruin it.
Plenty of people can't manage to deal with this event in a respectful manner on this very forum, let alone in the flesh, a few cans down.

Just four more hours until Atalanta taking on mighty Cremonese.
When I was having a smooch yesterday at what match I could watch, it made me realise how good the premier league is. Rarely a game in the EPL is boring. The rest of football is poor to watch.

I tuned into PSG at one point and turned it off after 5 minutes.

This will be bigger and also likely watched on TV by billions globally. They wouldn't want something to happen and be seen by the whole world. It's why I think fixtures will also be canceled next weekend.

There is almost no chance they postpone in my opinion

Because Notting Hill is a known entity. They have absolutely no idea what the numbers for the processions will be. This weekend they probably could have managed in hindsight however the sheer numbers of police around the City (St. Pauls) was insane.

Ultimately though, the decision was for the football authorities to make. Their decision making record is generally terrible and incredibly conservative so it’s obvious we’ll be treated to back to back Europa League games.

I don't believe that's true. People today are better educated. For instance, compare maths/science exams to that of previous generations. In terms of general intelligence, I'd argue people today are far smarter too. Primarily due to the internet and the sheer wealth of information consumed over time at a fingertips notice. Curious to what makes you think otherwise though?

Appreciate you want to keep your traditions and that's fine but you must also understand why younger generations (and most non-UK people) think it's all a load of nonsense. From a logical point of view we're talking about an archaic institution living a lavish life by virtue of birth right and all off taxpayer money, in 2022. It's not about being woke or disrespectful - just seeing the situation for what it is in reality.
IQ testing carried out regularly on comparable subjects over a period of several decades (for example during recruit mustering in countries with conscription) indicate the exact opposite. IQ scores are dropping, and have been for some time. Having lots of information at your fingertips doesn't make you smarter.

IQ rates are dropping in many developed countries and that doesn't bode well for humanity (nbcnews.com)

I agree… think they’ll let the games go ahead next weekend as they would of seen some of the negative comments this weekend about it. They’d of also seen the tributes that have been made by teams that played in other sports.

Well of course I wouldn’t boo.

Surely you can’t deny there’s a horrible hooligan element that exists in today’s football? Fans throwing flares, bottles, coins and Christ knows what else. Of course the vast majority would be respectful, but it only takes a couple of idiots to ruin it.

And I strongly believe it’s a gamble the FA are not willing to take.
Interestingly, lots of the hooligan element do it in the name of the queen

Why aren’t they already telling us if next weekend’s games are on or not?
They’ve had enough time to decide by now!
Instead everyone is left wondering what to do

I don't see how next weekend's games won't go ahead. There would be no MNF being the day of the funeral but in my opinion it doesn't make a difference whether the games go ahead 1 day or 5 days before her funeral (e.g. the CL games, other sports this weekend etc.). The only valid argument to cancel next weekend's games as well would have been if the funeral was on Saturday or Sunday given the huge potential drain on police resources, but I don't think that should be an issue now it's confirmed it is on Monday.

I also don't think the PL expected the amount of backlash it has received nor that other sports were going to go ahead; the PL jumped the gun and were the first sports association to announce anything whereas the RFU for example had time to review the criticism levelled at football before deciding all rugby union should go ahead this weekend.

That's interesting because I somewhat felt my generation was when intelligence peaked but didn't have the data to back it up (I'm 30). The OP was talking about growing up in the 1950's though, so I'd still argue my assessment was correct. IQ levels didn't start dropping off until the 2000's according to this article.

And having endless information at your fingertips does make someone smarter. It's lunacy to suggest otherwise in my opinion. The issue is how technology is used, not the information itself.

Don’t be so dam disrespectful. Why even post this. You don’t agree, fine but stop being such a troll.
Maybe you should step away from this thread for a bit? You're taking it all very badly, the Queen clearly meant a lot to you, maybe mourn away from this thread. You're leaping on anyone who doesn't share your opinion.

Don’t care if people don’t share my opinion. That’s life. It’s just being respectful which many on here are clearly unable to be or show. It’s sickening to be honest some of what I have read on here the past few days. Keyboard warriors at their best. Shameful behaviour.

If that's the case then surely it proves what a moronic decision stopping the football is.
Watching Real Madrid at the moment. Presumably people living in the UK can watch RM as well.
Shh, keep gloating like that and they'll consider blocking broadcasts.

I mean what I've read on here, in this thread, has been tame, and barely out of line or all that offensive at all. If you saw what is said on twitter or facebook you'd probably have a heart attack. As I said, you're clearly struggling and can't cope with how people talking about The Queen, so maybe do the sensible thing and stop reading it?
