Having enjoyed a major role during the first of Louis van Gaal's two seasons at Old Trafford – showcasing his versatility by occupying a number of positions – Young will have been disappointed that injury and competition for places prevented him from building on that in 2015/16.

His involvement was limited throughout the campaign, but he did enjoy a run of games at right-back in November, December and January before picking up a severe groin injury that kept him out of action until the start of April.

Like I said in he Memphis thread, he will be ahead of Depay in the pecking order. You know what you get from him.

It's pretty much I can see that we will stick on Martial, Mkhitaryan, and Lingard as our winger option. The last option will be Young or Januzaj or Memphis. I can see Mourinho is going to put Januzaj and Memphis on loan and keeping Young. He's not raw like Januzaj and Memphis, and he still has some quality to offer.

I felt like "welbeck vs chicha" deja vu. Got a feeling both of them will be offload by Mourinho.

He's not Manchester United's level. There again most of our wingers are in that same situation

Seems like he is one of those guys who prepare well for pre season, to avoid the cull. When the season start he fades away.

Look sharp, but little end product. Look to have good speed, good crossing technique, but his speed and crossing often accounts for nothing, Rojo esque :nervous:. In his bad day he is liability. For a squad player, he is unreliable with his long lay off injuries. Kinda a yes man too. Listen and follow instruction, but seems like only think within the box. Like that Moussa Sissokho guy, but more versatile. Deceptive player. May be a vocal and friendly member in the squad, but I personally see more harm than contribution, so rid is my personal, choice.

Would much prefer Lingard to be our winger in the bench than him. But it will be interesting to see how things go. We have Martial and Miki as starters on wing positions, with Depay, Young, Lingard, Januzaj and possibly Mata being as back ups. I cannot see Mourinho keeping all of them, and will expect two of them to leave/go to loan.

Anyone want him to stay? I reckon he has a few seasons left in the tank.

We need wingers at this club, and Youngie is probably one of the best in recent years.. which I know isn't saying a lot but he will flourish like Duff and Robben did with Jose.

Nope, not good enough for a top club imo, and never was.

He was the best of a bad bunch, doesn't make him a good option.

He's one of the most pointless players in our squad imo. Van Gaal seemed to love him because of his versatility (am I correct in saying he played every position under him except GK, CB and CM?). It doesn't bode well for him that Mourinho was so explicit about preferring specialists to multi-functional players.

He played CM against Hull I think it was last game of LvG first season.

He has to go. Ashley Young offers nothing.

I think his name should now officially be "Oh yeah, there's Ashley Young too" because whenever I'm talking to people or thinking about our options, he's always the last person I remember.

Not that I have anything against the guy, I just always manage to forget he exsits.

His first touch is good, he can dribble and beat his men, he works hard as well, defensively he's also good, offers pace, can use both feet but his crossing is so inconsistent which makes his end product not to be a favourable enough. He will put a good competition between Lingard, Januzaj and Memphis. I personally think he's currently the best one out of four but the other three are still young and has more potential. It will be up to Jose to choose two from Lingard, Januzaj, Memphis and Young. You just never know what Ashley will become, he might pull another miracle like what he did 2 seasons ago.

Oh god I had completely blocked that from my memory. Di Maria was in the team and everyone thought he would be finally back in midfield after all those awful performances on the wing and upfront. But Young played there instead.

So that's left back, right back, left wing back, right wing back, centre midfielder, left winger, right winger and striker he played under for Van Gaal. He was actually good as a wing back. Unfortunately for him Mourinho doesn't play those formations.

I'm a Januzaj fan but even I admit Young did more than Adnan in the Wigan friendly. Here is some activity in the 2nd half leading up to the 2nd goal:

48:20 - Mata intercepts Jääskeläinen pass.
48:21 - Mata passes to Keane who scores. 1:0
52:15 - Young cross from inside penalty area. Intercepted for corner.
53:57 - Valencia earns corner
55:51 - Young cross creates a chance for Mata
56:55 - Valencia cross intercepted by hand. Handball on edge of Wigan area.
57:51 - Free kick taken by Young, passed to Herrera
57:52 - Herrera shot blocked.
57:53 - Andreas scores from ricochet. 2:0

After that the match was practically over.

Januzaj is young and has a high potential upside.

Young is a 31 year old winger who has no end product.

Young is a lot better than people give him credit for. That said, at 31, it's a good time to sell. I'd still take him over Memphis though.

What?

Young is the perfect player for the bench. Works hard, does not moan about things. He still has 2 years in him left to be a In Depth player for United. Give him atleast 1 more season, after that Memphis or Januzaj will maybe step up to be the second Lw/Lm player after Anthony Martial.

Lingard works hard and does not moan. He's about as good as Young and at 23 can still improve while Young is 31 and has limited time left at the top. Plus he's on lower wages and it's always good to have academy graduates in the squad. I'd rather keep him for the bench and sell Young.

Lingard can score some pretty special goals, its in his locker, while young other than hard work to a lesser degree, offers nothing going forward, both young and fellaini are lucky in this era of united they have kept their place, because in a golden era of united they would have been shipped out a long time ago djemba and kleberson style, lasting less than 2 years.

Why waste games on Young when you can place some trust in Januzaj and play him instead? Young has scored 11 goals in 108 league games. It's a pathetic return for an attacker at one of the biggest clubs in the world. He's a bad smell that should have been binned a couple of years ago.

Plus, Lingard can do the very same job you speak of.

Januzaj has scored 5 goals in 50 league games.

Januzaj didn't cost £18 million, is very young and has been royally messed around by Van Gaal.

As for Young, I just don't understand what he offers the club apart from some famed hard work (like all of our players) and some misguided belief that he could play as a full back.

You know it ! Ash is a Top player and fits Jose like a glove the ultimate mourinho player who works hard

What's with all the positive here? Just typical Ashley Young's performance: looks flashy, but no end product = IIRC wasted 2-3 chance creating opportunities by poor cross (good shape but aimless similar to Rojo). Energetic and commanding when the game's going our way, but likely to hide when it gets tough (Dortmund. So did others IKR). If he can stay, it's not due to his brilliance but others being incompetent. He's like the star of pre season every year.

His crossing was not good but he did show plenty of desire in getting on the ball and trying to make something happen. He knows he's one of those on the fringes who needs to impress to earn starts.

The ultimate squad survivor, he will play anywhere to stay in the team wont he.

He was in a stroppy mood last night, looks like he's ahead of Memphis as the back up LW.

Like him we are starting to have quite a number of players creeping into their 30s. Tony, Young, Basti, Carrick, Rooney and Ibrahimovic.

Birdshit boy is a good player, I like having him in the squad.

He's consistent and can pretty much guarantee you a decent statistical return along with tireless work rate. He's happy to slot in whenever and wherever. Definition of a solid squad player.
