Everything in our life comes from a culture somewhere. Chopstick comes from China, fashion comes from everywhere from Milan to Japan to Korea, lifestyle, movies, pop culture, songs, even football club and lifestyle, religion comes from Middle East, Cosmetic from Korea, Kpop, Hollywood, Pasta and italian coffee, Political views comes from Greek, we adopt many things good and bad everyday on every walk of life.
Black people should stop assuming the whole world is out to get them racially.
This whole offended by something is becoming tedious it'll actually desensitized people from the actual racism that still exists till today. Blacklivesmatter is important and should be made aware, historical truth, repatriation, reconciliation, those are pure and real issue they should be fighting for, not becoming a PC warrior by calling everyone racist without even a shred of common sense.
You'd think they'd know better after centuries of persecution and exploitation.Black people should stop assuming the whole world is out to get them racially.

Who do black people think they are, getting racially abused and telling people about it.
.....Uh uh.Oooooh mate..
Nah.
They're doing that party again still after the prior shitstormSo my girlfriend was telling me they’ve banned whiteface at her uni. She’s supposed to be going to an annual lacrosse team night out tomorrow and each year different people are assigned countries to go as. She’s got Japan, someone else has Africa, someone had France etc.
Apparently when it happened last year the uni kicked off because the Japanese lot put white make up on their face. A few people complained and the uni banned it, evidently.
I get why the uni don’t want the aggro, (it made the local press) but is that really as serious as blacking up? It’s not copying a skin colour, Japanese people do actually apply white make up, as far as I know. I just thought it was an odd thing to complain about. Anyone else?
Well I did think that too. For whatever reason the poor bugger who has to dress up as an African is on far dodgier ground than the French person who chucks on a striped shirt and a garlic necklace. They're doing that party again still after the prior shitstorm
The whole dress as a country theme is asking for trouble. Just all go as X-men or whatever.

It's like these people never read the news- send them a link to the Trudeau shitstorm.Well I did think that too. For whatever reason the poor bugger who has to dress up as an African is on far dodgier ground than the French person who chucks on a striped shirt and a garlic necklace.
@Sweet Square I think the historical context is missing to make what happens in Japan with the hair comparable to blackface. I can see why people might find it offensive but I perceive it more as a cultural tribute than mockery.
I would agree with this particular point. It's just that it's easier to pinpoint and fight meaningless stuff rather than try to adress the issues at their coreYou're overplaying the extend of racism outside America (I don't know about Europe), but half the world doesn't hate Blacks, Half the world doesn't even see many black people enough, you think an asian girl would go to extreme length and discomfort (that flock of braid is actually hard to maintain and stressfull on hair you need a good hair to support that looks) because they "hate blacks"? They do that because the hip-hop culture, something blacks should be proud off that people adore their style. Ask any other countries I don't think anyone would object if other country emulates their looks. The korean are so happy that many other countries embraces their k-pop style, and they actively pursue it. Indonesians are proud if you like our Batik, our traditional dances or martial arts and actually promotes it to the world. Never in a million years we call an innocent westerner wearing Batik as "racist" even though we see them as invaders due to our past history.
Racism should be fought on a more fundamental basis, systematic discrimination by the government, unjust policing, and many other heavier stuff than what sort of hair style an Asian woman support.
I know
Don’t shoot the messenger though!
They are definitely setting up whoever gets to dress up as ‘Africa’

Barnes and Noble launched the new Diverse Editions on Tuesday, featuring new covers illustrating the main characters as people of colour.
But the initiative to mark Black History Month received a swift backlash with authors calling it superficial. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Moby-Dick and Frankenstein were among the titles included. On the back of the redesigned covers, the company said: "For the first time ever, all parents will be able to pick up a book and see themselves in a story."
But the move faced a barrage of criticism. "This is essentially literary blackface," tweeted author Frederick Joseph.
Is there a difference in your opinion when a black woman is cast as Ariel in the live action “The Little Mermaid”?I can't help but shake my head at some of these antics. How do these marketing people justify their pay!

Books pulled over 'literary blackface' accusations
Many years ago my friends and I went to a fancy dress party as the A Team. One of us dressed as the legendary BA Barracus and had a full on 3 coats of the creosote spray tan and looked amazing! We all pulled that night but that's a different story.
None of us were back then, or are now, in any sense of the word racist but I wonder if that would now be viewed badly?
Edit: Thinking about it, we were actually arguing over who was going to be BA as he was always the coolest.
I'm cringing a bit right now.

Yeah. Time change. We didn’t blink an eyelid 20 odd years ago. We just thought it was cool and ok.

I remember a co-worker telling me a few years back that he blacked up for a fancy dress party.
"who did you go as?" I asked.
"...just a black man." he said.
It took me a few seconds to process that one.

Some real cringe-worthy posts in this thread. So much mental gymnastics to defend an insanely rich athlete who did everything in his power to not go to jail. Just incredible.

This is not blackface. This is race swapping characters which companies like marvel and other movie studios do all the time. I personally hate it as it's lazy and pandering but it's not blackface in the meaning of blackface. Fictional characters can be any colour which is an argument for doing it.Even ignoring the blackface thing, it's a little weird. If you read a book and need a character to be the same colour as you before you can relate to them, then what's going on?
I’m offended as well. Shit game.I’m offended. Watching Scotland/England rugby and the English #3, a black fella, is wearing white face.
