I think there must have been some kind of gentleman's agreement, which they wanted to be seen to try to honour, to ensure he still joined them next year.According to AS, Madrid has an informal agreement with De Gea that means they must pay him €5 million for failing to complete his transfer this summer. That's much cheaper than paying United what we asked for, plus Navas.
