Thought he pulled out a big performance today. Should have won the header for their goal, although keeper should be claiming or punching in that zone.

Did ok overall. I'd expect that between them, Wan-Bissaka and Maguire should be able to stop an opposing player getting a big chance from a corner. For it to happen twice in a few mins, is a bit embarrassing. Maguire should be imposing himself, given his size, in that type of situation.

The header straight to their player inside our box was another weird moment.

Maguire did make a few good challenges, cut-out some crosses, won possession, covered when Fred was asleep.

Defended well for the most part. Although his passing was not that great. Too easy to concede that corner. De Gea should do better though too.

Thought he was average to shit all around today, from his defending to his passing. He has some good moments but also some ridiculous moments where quicker players make him look like absolute amateur like Sterling did in that situation where he dribbled past him like he was a tree, he just stood there watching because he is slow as feck. With his lack of speed he needs to use his brain in those situations, but instead he looks amateurish. He even made himself look like an idiot trying to bring that ball out during the final few minutes where he looked like absolute donkey doing it, he took ages to get out of our box and then he lost the ball just out of the box because he was too slow to catch the ball he had under control. Amazing stuff.

My guess is he will turn out to be our biggest waste of money ever because he didn't improve our defence at all, and he hardly has anywhere near resale value that we paid for him. But hey, at least he can stay fit, that was probably the biggest challenge for United CB for years.

Think he was good overall but disappointed he didn’t manage the corner goal better.
2 tackles
3 interceptions (joint second with McTominay, Rodrigo 1st)
10 clearances (1st)
4 defensive aerial duals won (joint second with McTominay, Shaw 1st!)

I love him!
Maybe a bit picky but he only had 2 won aerials out of 4 attempts. Same as Shaw and Lindelof.

Very very good performance. Made so many clearance in the dbox. Added composure to the team. Really pleased

You're right. I read 4 defensive aerials thinking that was how many he won, but that was just how many battles he had. My mistake!

Immense today with his last ditch ball interceptions and pushing their attacking players higher up the pitch when picking up the ball, though that goal was on him imo, still a convincing performance after a stretch of games where he wasn't as good.

He's steadily getting better, he was very good against City. I already think he's good but I think with a bit of time he can be even better.

This has got to be a wum surely? Bissazka and Mcguire have made our defence. He is not perfect as with any other player but he is a strong defender, leads the backline with authority and can play. His passing has been a huge plus thus season and I fully expect him to contribute goals once he gets going. Captain material.

I am not sure how I am wumming by describing two situations that actually happened in a game?

Also we conceede similar number of goals per game as last season, despite de Gea being in better form and having proper fullback in Bissaka who is turning out to be much better defensively than whoever played last season.

You'd have thought of all our defenders Smalling would have been the best partner for him. He possesses strengths Maguire is lacking and vice versa.

I am not sure I called him any of that directly, but describing some of his move as idiotic, amateurish or so. But yeah, maybe bit over the top with names.

Probably just below the level of world class on the whole. Could be elevated with a better partner.

I'd like to go back to just before Tuanzebe's injury when he was beginning to displace Lindelof. That was looking good imo.

I wouldn’t say it is similar numbers of conceded goals as last season. After 16 rounds last season, United had conceded 26 goals, this season it is 19 goals. 37% less goals.
But a season goes up and down, we will know the difference first when the season is over.

Arguable we need two CBs that are really strong in the air too because DDG is terrified of leaving his line.
There have not been many goals that DDG could have dealt with and where it had helped with one more aerially strong CB. To my knowledge only 3 headed goals conceded, one at Lindelof and two at Maguire. If Lindelof had been a monster in the air, maybe one of those three goals could have been avoided, maybe not.
When you combine CBs you always get some pros and cons. If Maguire was paired with someone else, there would be new weaknesses somewhere else.

I think both CBs played last match on a level we cannot expect from Tuanzebe within a near future. Could be wrong, but at least there is nothing that indicates that he would be better than what we saw last Saturday.

Vs City, we won because we were courageous enough to play the ball out of the back. Both Maguire and Lindelof are good at this.

If we can be courageous enough to do that against City, who are known for their stellar press, then it will give the lads so much confidence. Lindelof said so as much after the match. Liverpool will be the ultimate test with regards to playing out from the back, but against two very good teams that press - Tottenham and City - we were brave enough.

I just hope the team realises this and trusts the concept. Maguire and Lindelof have the balls to do it. AWB is not flippant with the ball and Shaw too knows how to do it. With increasing confidence in McTominay and Fred in midfield it will embolden our CBs, and more than anyone Maguire. The best is yet to come for Maguire. He is at his dominant best when he is pressing at the backs of forwards, stealing the ball, powering forward with teammates around him. Just like with England.

This is the big difference in our performance, we tried to play the ball out from the back and tried to break lines, hoofed the ball when we couldn't bring the ball and passing lanes was closed.

Jose had a go at the team for playing passes between CBs and CMs, he wanted to play long balls and gamble on second ball back in 2016-17.

This is a step in right direction. Once you beat the press, you get the chance to release Rashford or James on the wings.

One thing I really like about him is his composure on the ball. I don't think he's that great technically or with his passing but he's very calm on the ball because he knows he can outmuscle anyone who tries to challenge him for it even if his touch doesn't come off.

He's never in a million years an £80m player but he's definitely a calming presence at the back and a definite improvement to our first team. I do think Smalling would have been a better partner for him than Lindelof mind but there you go, one of those things.

Exactly. We concede now mostly because of individual errors. As a defensive unit we are the best we have been in years.

I like him and I like that he’s becoming our more regular Captain.

I feel calm seeing him at the back, he’s reliable and he’s not a big ego. He’s the sort of player you need to win leagues... if Klopp can ever be enticed to leave Liverpool..

I fail to see how you can be considered good on the ball when you take an absolute eternity to do anything every time you have the ball. He’s not a bad player, he’s just average. Defenders as good as him are ten a penny.

Good second half I thought, tried to push the ball forward more than in previous games and was trying to win the ball early at point of contact.

Absolutely this. Was about to write this. The guy was taking ages to make simple passes. Gary Neville kept on saying hiw everton are doing good by coming back to shape. It was because we let them come back and mostly because of our defenders.

Not great today. His passing is not that great although part of it is our poor movement.
I would rather have Smalling personally since he is better at defending.

Gave the ball away for fun in the 1st half with long aimless Rojo hoof like balls up-field.
2nd half he performed a tad better.

His aimless hoofing is so fecking annoying.

Pretty much this. Such an average defender and a player in general. Why on earth did we spend so much money on him?

I don't dislike him, but he's just Ok and it was plain to see even at Leicester. He is a 50m defender at most.
