It's a minor bar fight. Happens all the time. Fine and release even if he was involved. The only thing troubling is the report by the Greek authorities.

Do they have time for vaccation now? Soon the season starts again. I guess there is no pre season at all since internationals start in around 2 weeks time and the league in 3.

The video and incident in general seems disappointing, expected to see a proper dust up with our captain covering himself in glory. It's clearly got nothing on Stevie me attacking a dj for not playing Phil Collins.
Just out of interest is the general consensus that this story is true? Or could it simply be a victim of serious embellishment or even an urban myth?

Honestly though, I find it hard to believe the police would be doing this unless something actually happened. If they made it up, it’s not good marketing for Greece under a very delicate time for their economy. They must be under immense pressure from the local government to not make this an international scandal.
If you don't want to make it an international scandal, giving statements about the incident isn't the best way to go.

I'm not saying the greecr cops are angels. But accusing them of looking for bribe doing random pickup against the captain of manchester fecking united?

You gotta be kidding me. Come on guys i know he's one of ours but come on...

You don't mess up with rich foreigner who can afford a lineup of lawyer for pizza money.

I’d rather back our player than the most corrupt police force in Europe. Does it really sound like Maguire to beat up a policeman and try to escape arrest, has he any form whatsoever for any kind of behaviour that would suggest he’d act in such a way? Maybe he did do that but it seems really out of character to me.

If you really feel that the Greek police deserve a fair crack of the whip then more power to you.
So basically:
Maguire = innocent until proven guilty
Greek police = guilty until proven innocent

Doesn’t seem fair.
And for what it’s worth, no, it doesn’t sound like something Maguire would do, but I don’t know the facts I don’t see how anyone can make a conclusive claim in either way, it’s hardly out of the ordinary for people to act out of character.

Yeah it's great to have a team full of English internationals. Will be stripped off the armband for this.

Many people have already made a conclusion Maguire probably did it and should be stripped of captaincy. It's as if him being a captain is a major problem at the club and now this situation will solve it.

Can’t really say too much until we find out what really happened, that’s if we ever find out the whole truth. However, Harry being here who he is I wouldn’t be surprised if the local authorities milk this and try to make an example out of him.

The most shocking thing out of all this story is the lack of social distancing and thinking it's fine to party with people like that.

Should be stripped of the captaincy just for that

You're assuming local PD in a small Greek town are smart enough to understand the potential larger implications of decisions they make.

Fine and release IF YOU DONT then resist arrest, verbally abuse and hit a policeman for arresting you and then trying to bribe him to let you go.

The statement from Greece police is also for the latter. And I’m not sure why they would invent such charges unless they had evidence.

Yeah that’s equally ludicrous and even if he was involved, it’s only fair to hear the full story before stripping him of his armband.

Maguire wasn't wearing a white shirt that night

This was posted in his insta story last night. But then again no one wearing both white top and dark short in that video unless if he had change.

What evidence is that? That a Greek police have a reputation for corruption? That’s as relevant as the fact that Brits have a reputation for violence abroad. Surely each isolated incident should be judged on its on merits. This thread smells like hypocrisy.

All police. Supported by Transparency International's ranking of Greece in their corruption index. I'm basing my opinion on known knowns: that police everywhere are documented to be heavy handed, prone to lying and obfuscation to support their version of events and that, in terms of their European neighbours, Greece is fairly corrupt. Also that Harry Maguire doesn't appear to have any documented history of violent behaviour.

Has anyone put bets on the identity of the group they were fighting with?
Also, I feel sorry for the Greek coppers having to deal with idiots like that.

He should have been bringing down Lukaku in the box in his left centre half channel right about now, but his useless teammates have basically landed him in jail.

Yep. The fact that the culprit in this game should be off as he should in our game might have changed things.

Instead of talking about police (not saying you are right or wrong), have you ever thought about the reputation english men have in other countries when they are on vacation? And why that is?

That's what i was saying yes. The video suggests it was a simple, but stupid, bar fight between patrons. Which isn't a big deal. However, the Greek report suggests that there was a resisting arrest with an officer, which is a big deal. Whether they'd make that up or not, i've no idea, as i've never even been to Greece.

Yes groups of lads on holiday do have a bad reputation, but maybe the police prejudge all lads on holiday.

So he’s on a family holiday. Some other United players on the same Island. Decided to hit the town with his brother and mate after dinner.
They have had a few too many. Late into the night he is recognised by some others who decide to have a pop. His crew take the bait and a melee ensues.
Cops turn up and try to break it up. His crew decide to resist arrest. Get taken to station, decide to do a runner. Get caught again by cops, hit the cops while resisting arrest again. While in station offer the cops a bribe to let them go.
That’s basically it, right?
Should have gone to bed with his fiancée as he had done for the last 12 months!

Yes, I'm well aware of that but Harry Maguire doesn't fit that profile beyond being English.

Maybe. We don't really know exactly what happened more than roumours and quotes from Greece. But if it is at least 50% what have been said it is bad. Specially if you are captain of on of the biggest clubs in World and shouldn't be traveling in this time of pandemic.

You really need to let that last bit go.

Rashford and Williams are in the same place, if the club have said it is OK then why not?

But you are putting the every Greece police in the same bucket when you are talking about corruption?

It's well documented that Greece has problems with corruption. The police, being part of the establishment, will have their reputation diminished by that, unfortunately.

Always choose woman over man, it's better.

Acting like it's more likely that Greek police fabricate an incident, maybe risking a diplomatic incident, rather than a footballer being an idiot on holiday is taking the red tinted glasses a bit too far.

@mods

You should consider minimum age requirement for posters over here :)

Absolulty not. This is not time for travel. The more we do, the far we are from winning over virus and further away from getting us back in the stadiums.

I don't think clubs can dictate what you do on your vacation as long as you don't harm the club in some way. But players should think once or twice about traveling.

They would have advised them where they should and shouldn't go to.
